I admit freely that I am of that particular sub-class of human society labelled as “geek,” but I must’ve been too busy on the pitch playing rugby and working out at the gym last the summer and somehow missed this!
Last June a dude named Bobby Henderson wrote an open letter to the Kansas State Education Board in regards to their debate about intelligent design getting equal time in schools with the theory of evolution. He proposed that it is important for students to hear multiple viewpoints on intelligent design, saying (1) :
Let us remember that there are multiple theories of Intelligent Design. I and many others around the world are of the strong belief that the universe was created by a Flying Spaghetti Monster. ... It is for this reason that I’m writing you today, to formally request that this alternative theory be taught in your schools, along with the other two theories. In fact, I will go so far as to say, if you do not agree to do this, we will be forced to proceed with legal action. I’m sure you see where we are coming from. If the Intelligent Design theory is not based on faith, but instead another scientific theory, as is claimed, then you must also allow our theory to be taught, as it is also based on science, not on faith.

Proof of the existence of the FSM, if needed, can be found in the recent uptick of global warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. Apparently His Pastaness is to be worshipped in full pirate regalia. The decline in worldwide pirate population over the past 200 years directly corresponds with the increase in global temperature. Here is a graph(2) to illustrate the point.
This FSM thing exploded on BoingBoing (here [3]and more here[4]) and t-shirts and stickers(5) were made depicting FSM Ichthys and pirate fish. There was even a “protestant” schism that broke off known as the Demuristic Church of The Flying Spaghetti Monster(6). A RealUltimatePower(9) crossover(8) also appeared.
