A landslide killed 13 people and destroyed five houses when it plowed into a village in mountainous northern Afghanistan, officials said Sunday.
Ghaul Dori Village in Sari Pul province was hit by the avalanche of rock and mud on Wednesday, but it took days for the news to emerge from the remote region, which has no phones and is only accessible by four-wheel-drive vehicles, provincial Gov. Sayed Iqbal Munib said.

After evaluating all options it was clear that none of the governmental or international aid organisations could reach the area and by extraordinary procedure a German helicopter with a small team of Swedish soldiers came to help.
100 blankets, 30 tents, 30 covers, 30 kitchens, 30 food packs, 180 L oil, money and medicine. The helicopter couldn't land so all cargo including the Swedes had to be dropped before finding a better landing spot.
