So, I have completely fallen for this girl at work and I plan to ask her out tonight. However, she does have a boyfriend. I'm not worried about the competition (it's a Man Utd v Burton Albion situation).

But what do you think is the best way to approach it?

Female and homo****** opinions preferred.

A bit extreme, but still an alternative...

All I can say is just go up to her and ask. What's the worst that happens? She says she has a boyfriend and turns you down. Her loss and you just move on to the next office cutie that you come across.

Does she appear to flirt with you?

BoyElroy
01-20-2006, 04:27 AM
Well, if she's in love with the other guy, you've got no chance and you shouldn't mess with it in any case. OTOH, if she's iffy about her boyfriend and you manage to get her to dump the chump, then you've won yourself a highly undependable girlfriend who'll prob. do the same to you at some point. Mazeltov!

<Gypsum Fantastic>

Yes. The worst case scenario is that she stays with her boyfriend out of sympathy. I don't mean to sound arrogant or anything but that's the truth.

Hmmn...if the young lady is not entirely happy in her current situation, then by all means approach her and try to make her laugh and feel happy again, since she's prob. been dealing with a lot of negative relationship stuff for awhile. The last thing she'll want to do is talk about relationships since she's prob. argued with her guy pal for days/weeks/months about the situation.

She'll prob. just want to go out and relax and have fun without feeling a lot of heavy crap hanging over her head. So don't do anything to make her feel guilty about going out with you and play it cool and you're in.

I have one problem with your first post: "...at work"
I see trouble at the horizon. How close do you work together?
I only work with girls in my direct surrounding. I wouldn't want to be an 'ex' of any of them. Living hell. Do you like your job? Do you plan to stay there? How big is your company?

For the boyfriend: Don't even think about it. You're not jealous, right?
Don't start to mention him and don't force her. Just make her seeing all good times with you. Some girls drop boyfriends like hot potatoes if they're into 'finding themselves' and it's time to 'move on'. How old is she?

Ahh, i can't believe i'm giving you an honest opinion.

as for the approach, you don't drink, that's good, maybe get her tipsy but not drunk. And maybe sip a drink, too. Just don't do that 1 on 1 date. Move her to a fun place without that candle light atmosphere. Touch her while dancing... "in a friendly way", you know that stuff i hope. And then keep a lower profile again. Don't run after her. Let her admire you.

You're right. I've considered the same thing, but it's not really like that. She's a very genuine person, I think she's just been going out with this guy because she thinks she has to.

1) The job is a stop gap for both of us. She's starting a new job next week, but she'll still be working weekends. I'm only working there for the free training/qualifications until other plans come together.

My shift today finishes the same time hers starts (5pm). But we always stand around chatting for a while.

Just dont be arrogant towards her current BF when talking to her.
Act as if he's simply some guy who's number is about up and you're going to cut in....but politely.
Also...best advice is dont act too eager or desperate. Act as if she rejects you....no biggie....you're going to keep on truckin and too bad she missed her chance. That way if she says no at first.....you'll be in her mind for days or weeks and that's where you want to be....in her thoughts.
If you're a good man....she'll reconsider.
Just gotta remain cool as ice.

Also...very important..
Being truely cool is not caring how cool others think you are.
;)

Good luck....go get her!

The american concept of "dating" is confusing to most europeans anyway (at least to me). How can you date someone for a year, or what's "serious" dating? Here you would only call the first few rendezvous 'dating'. Anything further is just having a girlfriend (or not) or having a f*** relationship ("Fickbeziehung" how we call it here ).

I know, but it's just a language thing. Dating sounds like just having dinner and talking, maybe a bit more. I heard american girls tell me "I dated him for 2 years". First i was "wtf?", then i got it. You just call having a boyfriend/girlfriend "dating". Weird if you ask me. But pretty irrelevant.

No it's not your fault. Lacking humor, understanding or anything like it is a major turn off, if you ask me. Many girls look gorgeous and can be smart(!) but still live on another planet. Especially with the concept of "Randomness". I'm not speaking of insider jokes, of course!

I totally agree. The thing is, I knew a girl who was amazingly intelligent, quick witted and beautiful and every girl I meet is compared to that standard. I know it's pretty unattainable but I don't want to settle for less.

You maybe have to stop comparing apples to oranges, but not lowering your "humor" standards. Nothing worse then the need to explain why you find a situaiton funny and still just seeing a blank expression in your opposite.

An example. I posted something about being in the zoo with my girlfriend in the moose-thread. If you find it highly entertaining that a snake bubble farts in it's aquarium, the zoo in helsinki has not a single elk and you admire baboons because of their big red asses and your girlfriend is just (??????) she's maybe not your match. Being together means laughing about the same random stuff. Nothing is better then seeing your girlfriend in tears laughing about something you find funny, too. How creepy , random or stupid it may be. If the hotness and intelligence is added everything is cool. (Unfortunately the person i was talking about was my first and last longdistance relationship. Nothing is perfect. :| )

Look....Your British, so scale it down a bit.

Seriously, she is who she is. Don't think for a second that you are going to change her. Don't forget the old adage that opposites attract. It is still very early in the relationship and she still has her guards up. Tell her how beautiful she is and how good she smells and dresses and do not upset her. Take your time. If she likes you, she will show you.
