On Tuesday 28 October, at Babimost Airfield, 1 (German/ Netherlands) Corps and 11 (NL) Air Manoeuvre Brigade (AMB) conducted a visitors day as final highlight of Exercise GAINFUL SWORD 2003. Lots of high-ranking civil and military officials from the Netherlands, Germany and Poland attended the demonstration.

Lieutenant General Norbert van Heyst, Commander 1 (GE/NL) Corps, welcomed the visitors and informed the audience about the aim and the conduct of Exercise GAINFUL SWORD. Afterwards the soldiers of 1 (GE/NL) Corps and 11 AMB presented their vehicles, aircrafts and equipment during a static display. The state of the art Joint Operations Centre of 1 (GE/NL) Corps, the huge range of highly sophisticated equipment of 11 AMB and in particular its high-tech Helicopters gained a lot of interest from the visitors.

An exercise video, reviewing Gainful Sword, introduced the dynamic presentation of 11 AMB. Shortly afterwards the sound and airpower of two F16 fighter aircrafts, ten Apache attack helicopters, six Cougar medium transport helicopters and four Chinook heavy transport helicopters pressed the audience in the seats of the visitors tribune. One hour of impressive demonstrations proved 11 AMB's ability to conduct rescue operations as well as air transport and assault operations.

The dynamic presentation which ended with a formation flight of all helicopters was followed by a military ceremony. Representations of all units under command of 11 (AMB) during Exercise GAINFUL SWORD marched up in front of the audience.

Commander 1 (GE/NL) Corps, Lieutenant General Norbert van Heyst, reported the operational readiness of 11 AMB, commanded by Brigadier General Peter van Uhm, to the respective Commanders in Chief of the Royal Netherlands Army and the Royal Netherlands Air Force, Lieutenant General Marcel Urlings and Lieutenant General **** Berlijn. Lieutenant General Urlings pointed out that 11 AMB conducted the Exercise GAINFUL SWORD excellently and that this brigade offers 1 (GE/NL) Corps a most valuable first entry element within the NATO Response Force Concept.

Excellent pics! Its interesting to see that the Dutch army is using the nylon magazines, I wonder if they've encountered the same problems the Canadian army has had with them.

Yup, C7s and C8s in use here. BTW not only the plastic magazines are in use, I've seen lots of pictures with the STANAG steel mags as well. Don't know how the plastic ones perform though.

hey that one guy was Polish. You know the whole exercise "Gainful Sword 2003" took place in Western Poland, at Babimost airfield. It is about 35 km from Zielona Gora ;)

Poland often rent military training grounds to the NATO partners.

I have a friend who's in the Cdn. navy sub reserves and he showed me some of the nylon/plastic magazines they used, a lot of them had chipped feed lips (and I mean big chips, enough to make the magazines useless). Thats probably the main reason the CF regular forces have replaced them with the aluminium magazines.

The C7 is more widely used in NATO forces than the M16 variants.

No, I didn't actually, this is news to me. What do you mean by rent? They actually pay us for use our grounds, there isn't an agreement where the allies use our play grounds for free.

They are Dutch, they wear Dutch army boots and some parts of their clothing (overall) is also standard issued Dutch gear.
