Jim McCormick, and I were both Military advisors for Black Hawk Down, and I kept some of the props since it was my first movie I ever worked on.

In Black Hawk Down Kim Coates wears this helmet throughout the movie.

Hey that's really cool. I didn't realize the helmets were scratched to dullness; for some reason I thought they were spray-painted flat-black to get rid of the plastic gloss finish.

why not wear the kevlar helmets?!

RandallH1989
01-21-2006, 07:16 PM
Weight and size, i'm guessing. Especially because of the type of battles Delta was engaged in.

Need to be quick and maneuverable.

Beppo
01-21-2006, 07:52 PM
Exactly. In the book Mark Bowden says they wore the lighter-weight Pro-tec bicycle helmets because "their specialized work called for them to move fast in and out of small places, so their primary concern was bumping their head, not taking a bullet or shrapnel".
Nowadays with the smaller, lighter Kevlar ACH (advanced combat helmet) however, both fields are covered.

The reason for Pro-Tec over kevlar has been discussed often.

Back in '93 There was only the PASGT heavy uncomfortable kevlar helmet available to troops, therefor groups that had some freedom to what they wanted to wear, used the Pro-Tec since they needed something light but that could still protect the head from bumbs and bruises.

EDIT TO ADD: Ofcourse now, the MICH has replaced the pro-tec and therefor operators now have a ballistic protection with a light-weight helmet.

I'm a Medical Seargent (18-D MOS) involved with the 5th SFG. I've been in the military since I was eighteen. I got out of the military exactly a year ago from Dec. 12, 2005. I've been in the military for 12 years.

Since people keep asking me what is with my profile picture, I'll just tell you. When I was in the military I was notoriously known for disappearing and reappearing during missions, on break, and when people needed to talk to me. It really stuck, because I was very quiet at night, and during training, and on missions I would disappear for example from the front of a formation to suddenly reappearing behind everyone.

No I wasn't involved in the SOC community until I was 24. When I was "a 5th group guy" I travelled to Kuwait and stayed their for about 4 months, and then our unit was posted in Afghanistan for three tours or around 18 months.

DELTA Force and the SEALS continue to use the lightweight Pro-tec type sport helmets for VBSS and CQC.

Many photos have clearly shown the SEALS usage of the Pro-tec during VBSS and some CQC, but they clearly use the MITCH helmet for most combat ops.

While DELTA is a mystery....there have been no clear photos of DELTA using the MITCH helmet, only the few photos of TF-20 and TF-121 show most of the operators using the MITCH, but none are clearly DELTA. And there is no clear photos of an DELTA operator ever wearing an Kelvar helmet....

However, photos have shown that the DELTA operators continue to the Pro-tec....
During the Mir Wais hospital operation on Dec 7, 2001, a photo was taken of two DELTA operators assaulting the hospital with pro-tec helmets on.

During TF20's assault to kill Uday and Qusay at Mosul,Iraq in 2003, there is a photo taken of a TOW missile strike on the target building with many soldiers looking on....in the crowd you can pick out two DELTA operators wearing black Pro-tec helmets in the olive green jumpshuits.

My first FOB I was stationed in was in Mosul, Iraq at FOB Glory. After three months my ODA (081) was transfered to Camp Griffin for about half a month. After our team's first tour we were posted into Afghanistan for Search and Destroy missions with three other ODAs. Our first station was Camp Frontline or "The Dungeon" when I was posted in Afghanistan. The timeframe was early 2002-early '05. Minus my 8 and 1/2 months off.

Did you ever meet the Brit "Jock Robbo" when you were in Mosul,he was the Regiment guy attached to one of the ODA's who were name taking and door kicking,he was in Mosul from Nov2005 to Mar2005...with ARSOC,I thought I was hearing things when I hear "hey knobhead, whit the fek are you doing here" coming from one of the Hummers....I was up in Mosul for a few days with some clients....and I heard a Jock accent shouting at me from a US wagon, turned out to be my mate Robbo, from my old Regiment, last time I seen him was the year before in Baggers when he came to see the ex Regiment guys I was working with....turned out he was there as an LO but was bored shytless sifting through all the Intel,so he pulled some strings, got kitted out with Yank gear, and was acting as a Gunner for some Group guys just to pass the time, and get out of the office!!.......crazy fcuk!

No just the fact that ODA081 doesn't exist in the 5th Group, something you should have known, pictures don't prove nothing, even the admin over from Proffesional Soldiers has called Bull on your claims, there's a mod here who also happens to be former SF,maybe you'd like to PM him your details for verification...........if you are the real deal we'll apologise,if you're not then you'll be gone.......no pressure but you have 24 hours to put up your creds for verification.......PM Deuterium.

Man, if you looked closely at wizard's helmet, the padding looks like the ones on my genuine Protec helmet. I must say with those thick pads, the user must have had a small head like me. Also, if you watch the movie, the inner liners had been modified. Glad to see this poser gone.

hahaha, great shat happened today.

I had gotten ahold of his AIM name, with the help of ninja skills(it was in his profile....), and i started up a convo. He didnt realize it was me sinc my AIM name has my username here...but I got a response from his "daughter". I then asked why he would put up that name his daughter used it and all's "she" said was that her dad was SF and he worked in movies. Then conveniontly, "she" mentioned that her father was home as soon as i was saying thanks for the time. Then he comes up and spouts off how its rude to contact his AIM name to ask this stuff and I replied that he let the info become public, if he was SF, he should stick to PERSEC. In any case, he was saying about how I had 2 minutes to ask about anything. He was sick of airsofter kids asking about gns and gear and robins sage....I told him I wasnt interested and only wanted to know if he was familiar with a few names. He didnt know any of them, even though he was in Astan for a year, and was around many of the people I mentioned. So.....hes got a good story going up, and has yet to produce credentials. I pity him for what he might do on prosoldiers and SOCNET....that is all

Exactly. In the book Mark Bowden says they wore the lighter-weight Pro-tec bicycle helmets because "their specialized work called for them to move fast in and out of small places, so their primary concern was bumping their head, not taking a bullet or shrapnel".
Nowadays with the smaller, lighter Kevlar ACH (advanced combat helmet) however, both fields are covered.

i disagree with your comment. nowadays delta operators still use pro tech helmets depending on the mission,if they had to go back in somolia again they would still use pro techs or new pro techs because they have to be quick and fast and there professionals so there not worrying about hitting there head.Pro techs are better than ACH for moving faster and turning there head more quickly.

Yeah, I would not pay that much for a bump, and much less for the ballistic as well. You are pretty much just paying for the extra gadgets they are putting on it. Hell, you can on average buy an ACH on ebay for 200-250, lowest I've seen buy it now prices for brand new were 125.

WEll to answer your qeustion, there not worry about toomuch protection on there head like army rangers, marines ect. there too professional, they need to be fast and move into small places to get that hostage ect. and get the hell out of dodge. They are there to get job done fast and simple so they dont need big heavy helmets,so thats why they use protechs besides pro techs still offers great protection.:)
