They started wearing helmets, but then discarded them (and so did the fed non-conscripts later).

Also, the "bandits" now in the Russian service still prefer American uniforms over Russian ones (you don't see many US uniforms here in CW1, mostly post-Soviet stuff, but they're hit in the current one). To quote recent article:

Standing by a half-ruined building on the outskirts of Grozny, the Chechen capital, Vladimir and Sergei - two Russian rapid reaction force soldiers - hold their rifles at the ready and warily eye a group of unshaven locals in motley uniforms brandishing Kalashnikovs.

"Look at him," Vladimir says quietly, pointing at a young, well-built man in trainers and black fatigues labelled US Navy - "he has got three pistols sticking out of his belt, what is he going to hold the third one with?"

Vladimir and Sergei have been fighting in Chechnya since 1999 when Moscow launched its latest offensive against separatists in the region.

Their job is to fight the rebels. But over the past two years many of the men they used to hunt down have come out of hiding and joined the 7,000-strong irregular army controlled by Ramzan Kadyrov, the 29-year-old son of the late Chechen president and former warlord. When Akhmad Kadyrov died in a bombing in 2004, his son was too young to become president. Instead, he was made a deputy prime minister in charge of security and allowed to build his own army. De facto, he is the most powerful man in Chechnya and one of the most feared.

Human rights organisations say the militias, known as Kadyrovtsy, "issued with a mandate of uncontrolled violence", have been responsible for most of the kidnapping, tortures and arbitrary killings in Chechnya in the past two years.

The Russian officers say Kadyrovtsy have become one of their biggest problems in Chechnya. Even people close to the Kremlin admit that peace and stability are unlikely to return as long as Mr Kadyrov stays in power.

The Kadyrovtsy that control Grozny are supposed to be on the Russian side. But in reality, they are a law unto themselves. "This is a legalised bandit formation and they are no different from the rebels," says Sergei.

Yet President Vladimir Putin has received Mr Kadyrov in the Kremlin and named him a hero of Russia. Posters of the event decorate many of Grozny's shell-pocked walls.

When Mr Putin flew to Chechnya last month to endorse the newly elected parliament, Mr Kadyrov sat at his left hand. The parliament is expected to propel Mr Kadyrov to presidency next year when he reaches the age of 30, the minimum required by the constitution.

The Kremlin has transferred many of its responsibilities for counter-terrorist operations from federal Russian authorities to the local authorities, trying to turn a decade-long conflict between Russia and Chechnya into an internal Chechen one.

So far, according to a recent joint report by human rights organisations, this Chechenisation process has "resulted in the brutalisation of the warring sides and pervasive fear and insecurity for the civilians".

Magomed, a well built, unshaven man in his 30s, was among those who changed sides. Asked what he did before joining Mr Kadyrov's force, he answers with a wry smile: "I sat at home." Given the 90 per cent unemployment in Chechnya, joining Mr Kadyrov's force is often the only source of income. And while money to rebuild Grozny and repair the republic's infrastructure is running low, according to local officials, it seems to be readily available to Mr Kadyrov.

The fighters say they are paid $500-$1,000 (€420-€840, Ł290-Ł580) a month, twice as much as most Russian soldiers and six times the amount earned by Chechen teachers and doctors.

Kadyrovtsy is by far the biggest but not the only irregular army in Chechnya. There are other smaller armed groups, such as Yamadaevtsy, named after the Yamadaev brothers who fought against Russia in the first Chechen war of 1994-1996.

Mr Kadyrov's men were supposed to fight separatists. Instead, they seem to be picking fights with Russian security forces. Sergei says Kadyrovtsy often attack Russian checkpoints and prevent Russian security forces from carrying out their duties.

It's so much easier to be "a bandit" when you're legal :) Yamadayevs' militia is now oficially called "GRU Specnaz Battalion Vostok".

I read that sometimes they were released, after all not all chechens are head cutting bastards, some understand that they are just guys that were forced to come to this war. But that was during the First war. Nowadays unlikely.

Many were freed by their mothers, Sergey Kovalyov (human rights activist), a crazy old Russian Orthodox cleric who the rebels thought is a "holy man", buddhist pilgrims, etc.

The officers simply doesn't care. For example, their bombing killed POWs in Presidential's underground (deep penetration bombs, one landed in Maskhadov's command room but didn't explode). I mean, these guys:

Several dozen of them.

There were many hundred (thousands, if you count these sourrendered, starving, and trading their weapons for water) POWs held at the time of 1996 cease fire. Some were then prisoner-swapped, some were kept for ransom by a particular commanders, and some even joined their captors. In one incident a rebel group captured several dozen soldiers withdrawing from Grozny after a ceasefire, but they were released with their equipment.

There's officially 500 or so federal servicemen still missing without trace - in 1997, on the eve of a peace treaty, it was 1,200 or something (some of them are among still unidentified bodies). Chechens at the time said there was 18,000 citiziens missing on their side, arrested and "disappeared".

It's a "Russian Federation", isn't it? I use Russians like a Soviets, and not [Soviet] "Unionists".

Chechnya "legally" joined Russian Federation only in 2004 or something ("constitutional referendum" and all that). After the fall of Soviet Union in 1990-91, Chechnya broke from USSR and never joined FR, just further still broke with a Checheno-Ingushetia (after which Ingushetia joined FR all right, in 1992). Or maybe rather the Ingush broke off with Chechens, because they thought Russians would take their side in their conflict with the North Ossetians (they were wrong).

In 1991-1994 Chechens extremists took as a right the expulsion, robbery, and murder of non-chechen people. More than 300.000 non-chechens were killed or driven out. This brutality was not only against Russians, but also to Ukrainians, Jews, Tatars, Armenians and other nationalities. The whole Russian population of Naurskoe and Shelkovskoe districts was slaughtered and/or expelled. Russian Cossacks settlements like Assinovskaya and Novogroznensk were completely occupied by chechens.

"Self-defence forces" militia. Notice helmets and overly heavy gear they later discarded for mobility (and a modified RPG round).

First of all, I don't see anything particularly heavy here - looks to me like the guys are just out of shape. However, the RPG round is interesting - it's actually a valid use of tape on one! The way this works is explosives are taped to the head of the round. This really shortens it's usable range and makes it useless in its intended role, however it makes a very powerful blast wave that is good for clearing buildings if you can get close enough to shoot it into a window. Another modification that is possible is to somehow (I'm not sure of the specifics of how this is best done) fill the front hollow cone of the round with diesel fuel. The copper jet can still form, but it's also a small flamethrower now. I'd like to ask Iraqi vets here if they've seen similar things from the insurgents in Iraq. These tricks are supposed to be really old, invented in Afghanistan, so it's interesting to see how much cross-training takes place and how inventive the bastards are.

Chechen "rebels" are terrorists as any other terrorist elsewhere in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, Philippines, England, Spain and elsewhere. As a matter of fact there were quite a few of those Chechen freedom fighters fighting U.S forces in Iraq- I guess they got tired dealing with Russians kicking their ass so they gave a try going against the U.S and coalition forces, then again their "mujahadeen" brothers we calling for back up.

There are, in fact, Chechen populations in Turkey, Jordan and Syria. So Chechnens in Iraq is not particularly far-fetched. Doesn't mean they are hardcore jihadis. I think the Chechen fighters in Chechnya have their hands full trying not to get stomped by the RF military.
