Police Foil Asda Raid
Updated: 16:11, Monday January 23, 2006
Police have recovered £1m and arrested seven men after foiling a raid on an east London supermarket.
The cash was recovered by the Met's Flying Squad during a swoop on the Asda store in Ruckholt Road, Leyton.
Officers knew from intelligence reports a criminal gang had been planning to break in to the store.
Firearms officers were sent to the scene along with members of the Flying Squad at 8pm on Sunday.
Specialist ammunition was fired by police to put a vehicle out of action.
They made six arrests on the spot and one later on that night.
It is believed the cash was taken after the gang gained access to the store's cash room.
Detective Superintendent Bob Cummings, head of the Met's flying squad, said: "These arrests are the result of a long-term intelligence-led operation into a criminal network by the Barking flying squad, assisted by other Metropolitan Police Service units.
"The raid was meticulously planned on a superstore holding a substantial amount of cash.
"The degree of planning was highlighted by video equipment and walkie-talkies found at the scene.
"I would like to congratulate the investigation team on an extremely professional investigation and also thank the specialist firearms officers from CO19."

I thought they were called SO19, be interesting if any pics of them surface
