Photo was taken from SU 25 attack plane - same as the one seen in front. In certain ways its the russian equivalent to a A10 Warthog. It has seen some modifications and now theres also a two-seater version SU 35 - I may be wrong but I think its also can be seen on Permski pics - the one firing missile.
Thanks for the photos Permskii. :D

To rtq,
So you think watching a video of Chechen terrorists shoot down a helicopter is "funny". What if you or one of your brothers was on one
of those helicopters? would it still be "funny"? Please travel to Moscow
next summer on Paratroopers Day, and express those feelings. Now that
would be "funny".
Regards & Thanks,
Hist2004
I already said that I“m sorry. I can“t do more.
There is nothing funny on killing people, even they were soldiers. :|
few more words in finnish, sorry.
Sorry, this is not going to happen again.

The two-seater Su-25 is known as the Su-25UB. The one you are thinking of is the Su-39 (It's the one firing the Kh-25(?).) which is the next generation Frogfoot, which is based on Su-25UB frame, but only has one seat, the space being used for more electronics et cetera. Apparently only a very small number of Su-39s have been made and put into service due to the breaking up of the USSR an' other problems.
thats the Su-25 Frogfoot(american name) in russia its called. soldiers call it Grebeshok.
Any ideas what Grebeshok means? From I've read it's know by it's pilots as Grach which I'm pretty sure is Russian for Rook (a few Frogfoots have cartoon Rooks on their intakes).
I think I'm right in saying that to our Russian friends it's the Cy-25 Grach, while to use Westerners it's know by it's NATO codename, Su-25 'Frogfoot'.
:)

Grebeshok is a comb, when you look at the airplane from below it looks like a comb because of all the pylons.

Grach or whatever might be the name of the plane, but soldiers on the fields in Chechnya some of them call it Grebeshok, when it's flying over you it looks like a big comb

Su-25 is one of my favs in the russian airforce. A working horse, ugly but effective. The avionics and the targeting systems are a "little" behind top-notch, but what counts is the lethality - and it have a great punch ;)

02-24-2004, 12:47 PM
Thats right Groove! An airplane doesnt need to be pretty to be lethal. Yeah... avianics are lagging somewhat... but in a war with chechnya avianics against other airplanes dont matter. Yes.. it would be very great to upgrade avionics. I do believe that the Su-25 will continue to Serve with Russia at least for the next 15 years.

I don't like the thought of what those ba$tards did to the crew of that Mi8 after it crash landed. (They were executed by having their throats cut I believe).
Can the Mi-28 and KA50 take more uh damage then say an Apache?
It depends. All three could continue flying with 120mm AP rounds through the main rotor blades as long as enough was left to provide lift. I have heard that 50 cal rounds could penetrate the canopy of the Apache in Afghanistan... this would be a problem.
The Hokum and Havoc both have armoured windows that will stop 23mm HEI and 50 cal AP. In fact during testing a Hokum had its tail shot completely off an still managed to fly 2km back to base. What shot it off you ask? A ZSU-23-4 fired a 200 round burst into it from 100m.
The Hokum is very well armoured. The Havoc also has very good armour, but no helicopter could stop an anti tank missile or rocket from penetrating the canopy or cockpit area. The Hokum is the only operational helo with an ejection system for the pilot.

Can the Mi-28 and KA50 take more uh damage then say an Apache?
In operation Desert Storm the Apache had problems with enemy small gun fire. The AK-47 penetrated the Canopy in some cases.
The Mi-28 is the best fortified of the 3 Helos. It is designed to survive ( and fly ) a direkt Missile hit from a missle of the Sidewinder-Class. It has also a very good crew surviveabilty on crash.
The KA-50 has the ejection seat 0-0 like modern russian jets.
So i would say in order of most capable of taking hits: Mi-28, Ka-50, AH-64

Mi 28 is designed to protect its crew in a vertical 12 m/s fall.
Mi 28 composite swept back blades can survive 30 mm shells.
Cockpit can withstand 12.7 mm bullets and 20 mm shell fragments
I'd say it is a modern day version of Il 2.

I've just read the news that Russian Federation Airforce Command had already chosen unit that will recieve single Mi28N for field (combat?) testing. There are also 12 (!) Kamov 52 to be fielded to a certain unit this year.
With regard to Chechenya operations - there have been 6 newly upgraded Mi24PN sent to line units just in january 2004. Due to their equipment they'll be used mostly for night operations.
Damn...those are nice toys to play with :)
The 12 Ka-52s are for Special operations. The Ru Army aviation has selected the Mi-28N for service and 50 have been ordered for delivery over the next few years. Simultanously the existing Hips and Hinds will get all weather upgrades that greatly improve performance, plus engine and other upgrades.
