The French mountain CNAM training centre in Briancon has a special, week-long, camouflage course; they have experimented all sorts of camos there...

The beret is the traditional headgear of the Chasseurs alpin; it originates from the Landes region of France.
It was (and still is) mostly worn by sheperds because it affords good protection against wind, snow, rain; it can be used as a pouch to pick mushrooms, berries, nuts...it is very distinctive and the Chasseurs alpins are very attached to it.
