Seems like sony always uses cheap parts for their drives, at least on the playstations... my ps1 always was upside down ( one of my Dreamcasts had to get that threatment aswell tough ) to work properly and the PS2 always stands vertical, no wonder why Sony offers these holders to make it stand vertical...
Or buy one of the replacement drives, at least for the ps1 i saw replacement drives where lots of the plastic parts were replaced with metal ones and they worked pretty good from what i heard.
Also on games that use streaming all the time like the GTAs it can help to use on e of these kits to erase scratches.
For my GTA SA it worked.

yep i had the same problem, i think its from dust collecting over the laser lens
what i did was i got one of those Laser lens cleaners, its basically just a disk with little brushes on the bottom that cleans the laser lens, after a few times of that it worked fine
you could probably find it at Wal mart

I've never had a single problem with my ps2 since I bought it October 26th, 2000. Maybe because i'm careful with it and treat it like my member and don't throw my controllers at it when i'm frustrated.

Yep same here. I actually sent it back to Sony like 2 years ago when it was under warranty. They fixed it but I don't know how they did. Now it doesn't work again.

if you get the Disc read error problem use the cleaner a few times, worked for me atleast

yeah, actually now that i think about it, it is caused by the iris on your laser scanner either being dirty, or you are trying to run a disc that is in an incompatible format....

Hey, thx guys for the responses. I'll try the lens cleaner option, it sounds like the most cost efficient. If it doesn't work then I'll simply open my living room window, place the unit firmly in my hand and toss the f--ker about 150 yards onto my neighbors lawn, because no Madden gaming makes Mudbunny one grumpy sonnofabitch!!!! And that will leave me an excess amount of time to create stupid threads on MP.net entitled "how big is your moustache" and "what would you do with a parapalegic midget?". And we all know, nobody wants that.

Have ever opened the PS2? If not I'll give you the Sony CSR number to get a remplacement unit ;)
(they explain this to us at FS)

get the local mechanic dude to clean the laser reader. I get it all the time, and its just because of so much dust.
impulse, nice looking game!
they bad dudes seem to take a few rounds to fall..gay.

Sometimes it's not dust that causes the disk read errors. You have to open the PS2 up, and adjust a white plastic gear inside of it.

I had the same problem, and when I did the above, it worked.

Hey guys, for future reference. I opened the b!tch up and gave the wheel 2 clicks, moving the laser closer to the disc and it worked so, just an FYI.
Maybe because i'm careful with it and treat it like my member
So you don't let girls touch it?
