Okay, a little known fact about the Military is that there are a lot of university style lectures in nice comfy chairs after sleep deprevation has been practiced on the soldiers in those chairs.
I've had many harrowing experiences of falling asleep in some of these lectures and being awoken rather....."unpleasantly".
So I was just wondering what were some of your strategies for staying awake?
no, go to the back and don't get seen, how big are these lectures?

The back of the room is a no go, that's where the 2ic sits and watches the people in the back to see if he/she can't catch someone sleeping.
As for the lecture size, it varies all of the time. From as little as 30, to as many as 100 or more.

I use tabasco sauce from the MRE and put a tiny drop in one of my eye.

Learn to sleep with your eyes open, or hope you have the genetics to dip your head down a little, and have zero head bob. ;) <------The second one actually works pretty good

try taking notes
Yeah, that's the problem, I use to fall asleep while I was taking notes.

[Kelly bundy mode on] I once watched this documentary where this cat named "Tom" put toothpicks between his eyelids to keep them open so he could catch this mouse called "jerry", but Jerry always got away[Kelly bundy mode off]

Try sitting next to the hottest chick in class. The rest would take care of itself ;)

Take notes, get interested, and ask questions.

Armed Pacifist. I use to have me and my buddy next to me break off those "metal things for your shirt" on your pen (you know on the cap?). It makes it rather sharp. We would then proceed with stabbing each other in the arm if one of us was falling asleep. Hope that helps, worked for me!

I pinch myself, and if neccesary I twist the skin while pinching. The key is its got to hurt. It has worked good so far, the only problem is that you might have to keep pinching and twisting for a couple of minutes.

We do the elbow trick. You bump the guy next to you discreetly with your elbow, and he does the same, and so on. When it gets to the last guy in the row, he bumps the guy who hit him, and the chain goes back the other way. This way, you and your buddies got each other covered.

Yeah, it works until one guy shouts "Ow! What the F**k" by accident. And the OIC and everyone else turns and stares at you.

stand up and go to the back of the room, it's more respectful than falling asleep during a class...

Open windows before the lecture starts if possible, nothing will put you to sleep faster than a lack of fresh air.
Sit in as uncomfortable position as possible, if your comfortable you'll nod off.
A full stomach plus a droning voice equals a deep sleep. Try and avoid the 'lunch monster' by eating lightly before a lecture/O group/lesson.
I once had to sit through a presentation consisting of one hundred and thirty eight power point slides.
The subject, human resources.
For all I know I may have been abducted by aliens 'cause I still have no recollection of those hours.

have an instructor show up with a nerf ball on desk....bin the first person who sleeps - everyone laughs.
Then place a tennis ball on desk... bin the next person who sleeps...hahahaha funny.
pull out a baseball (or better yet the cheesy old blue - grenade trainers) place on desk... no one sleeps.
