Hamas is ready to merge armed factions including its military wing to form an army to defend the Palestinian people, the group's political bureau chief Khaled Meshal said on Saturday.

"We are willing to form an army like every country ... an army to defend our people against aggression," Meshal told a news conference in Damascus following the group's sweeping victory in Palestinian parliamentary elections.

yeah, that seems like a good idea and i support it, now everytime a missile from Gaza hits Israel this army is going to get wiped out

The way things are going now, the factions need to stop shooting each other before Hamas can even talk about merging them together...

Yes, a real army would present a good target for destruction, which is why HAMAS won't actually do it. It's just more hot rhetoric to make sure everybody knows that HAMAS isn't going soft.

Pretty soon, HAMAS will find that it will be unable to substitute hot rhetoric for real progress.

Setting up soup kitchens is one thing, actually getting a viable economy going, especially when you refuse to trade with your neighbour and has no viable export except labour (which you can't export because you like to strap explosives to them and send them into Israel), will be much more difficult.

And if Palestinians find themselves in even worse economic shape in five years time, HAMAS will find themselves in the same position as Fatah.

I think this move is very good. It will unite all military wing's in Palestine and form one Army to DEFEND Palestinian's. Even Israel and the US have said that it is OK as long as they denounce violence. This is a great step toward's bringing negotiation's foward, because it will unite all armed wing's which mean's that there won't be nomore group's that decide to just go and fire Rocket's at Israeli town's without any promition. And if they do continue Rocket attack's, the Hamas Government will be blamed which is good for Israel, then the Hamas government would be preety pissed at those who fired the Rocet's or Bombed bus'es. All Hamas now has to do is say nomore to violence. Hamas' first step is better than Fatah's whole 40 year's.

I believe this is a good step. They are trying to change their policies but are doing it slowly. In order to unite a country you unite the army. Instead of having 200 different factions. I'm pretty sure sooner or later they are going to denounce suicide attacks. But they will not do it immediatly.

One thing that seems to be true about the Palestinians is that they never miss an opportunity, to miss an opportunity.

Do you think that Israel would allow it ?????. When Palestine built a port to bring the goods straight into their country with out them being checked by Israel then it was destroyed. When they built an International Airport in Palestine who sent the bulldozers in to tear it down and dig up the runways. So just how is Israel going to allow a Army to be built up in Palestine

Hamas has blown up so many buses and so much more terror, they are and will allways be a terrorist organisation. As long as they don't recognise Israel and don't do something to compensate in some way for their killings they should be bombed.

There are 15-30 law enforcement agencies in the PA. Their aim is to unite all of them that way you dont need an agency for each faction or political leader.

Well, Hamas consider's Israel a Terrorist state too, both side's have to live with it. Sooner or later Hamas will have to accept Israel. This is the first step to make peace. Hamas' want's to put it's armed wing in a army which my friend is not illegal. If they are willing to do that I am sure they will soon have to accept Israel.

ow, we destroyed their beloved little port, shame on us, realy, im asking for forgiveness palestinians by destroying one of the biggest places that provided you and your terror groups with weapons and terror tools to destroy our bus's.
You cry about their construction sites like they are the victim famelys who's kids were killed when they got home from school in a ****ing public bus.

You destory their port, airport, houses, factories, tell them when to leave, when they go to their house, arrest them for suspicious activity. Why don't you just round them up and put them in ghettos? Oh wait they already live in ghettos except in the 21st century they are called refugee camps.

A) The Palestinians don't have a country...

B) The Gaza airport operated from 1998 to 2000 without any problems, but guess what happend then.

C) The question that should be asked is how the Palestinian factions are going to unite while they are shooting each other.

It's strange to call a place which is not a camp and the people living in it are not refugees a 'refugee camp'. Maybe you are a bit confused as to the meaning of the word.

As for destroying "factories"... the only "factories" Israel destroys are those "factories" that have been dedicated to the Palestinian war effort (a war against civilians) and have been used to make rockets and bombs.

What really harmed the Palestinian economy is the fact that Israel is letting less and less Palestinians into its borders to work as it's afraid of letting in more terrorists. But I guess the "Arab brethren" pitched in and provided the Palestinians who found themselves unemployed (thanks to the terrorist organizations) with alternative work places in their own factories, construction sites and fields. rofl

You might have a point. I'm pessimistic about the Palestinian's ability to do what's best for themselves, but if the optimistic scenario does come true, it will help move the peace process forward. We can always hope and pray.
