My idea is this, why not take the LOSAT missile system, seen here.

http://www.wsmr-history.org/Photos/losat.jpg
Then mount it on this thing.
http://www.military.cz/usa/armour/tanks/future/Expeditionary_Tank.jpg
The result would be a tank with a 105 mm gun for close in combat and a system capable of hitting enemy targets at a range greater than 4 kms. Of course this being a new weapon system the exact max range is not published.

The "Hummer" mount is most propably anyhow just a test bed and their going to deploy it on tracked chasis anyhow? Something along with the M113 that had that special TOW-turret, also the might integrate this to bradley in place of TOW? Or to some new similar system. :)

But there really isnt need for killer missile like that and for 105mm gun in same platform and anyhow, the 105mm is becoming increasingly ineffective against modern armoured targets, at least i think so.

The LOSAT is only being acquired in limited numbers for training purposes. They're developing a smaller version of it now called the CKEM that should be fully fielded:

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/munitions/ckem.htm

Original concept was to have the LOSAT mounted on the M-8 AGS chassis:

The hummer version is designed to give light-medium brigades which are to be deployed via C-130 the ability to kill any MBT at long range. The reason its on a Hummer is it is intended to be used on the hummer.

The vehicle you see bellow is part of the US's Future Combat System program. So that chassis may one day be the main backbone of US ground forces.

Having the missiles on the MBT vehicle gives it the ability to engage enemy tank formations at ranges that do not allow current enemy tanks to fire back.

Also the 105mm may be less powerful but there are some pretty cool rounds out there that are still very effective.

Mountainbear - any chance you've got any M-8 AGS pics? I've got a couple dozen or so but I'm always looking for more. :)

Holy that XM8 varriant is a awesome idea.

I know about this variant of the XM-8 from the French magazine RAIDS. Unfortunately I don’t have a scanner and I goggled to find these pics.

Might that system work well on the German Weasel or something around that size?

I think the the Weasel is too short for the LOSAT.

The LOSAT is 2845 mm long does anyone know how long the Weasel is?

is that what they do with the airborne units down there in the US? I always wondered what they replaced the old tank with (lost it's name right now).

Then again I've seen video of Hummer's armed with TOWs engaging Iraqi tanks at ranges longer than they could fire back from.

Wiesel 1 is 3,5m long, the Wiesel 2 (one additional road wheel) is 4,2m (can be made a bit longer) - so Wiesel 2 is only 50cm short of an HMMVW.

Will never happen anyway, if a US military branch saw use for a vehicle like the Wiesel they already had purchased them.

Losat is incredible over-kill (Mach 4?!) and much too expensive. If one day they have to take down King Kong in New York it would come in handy, but only then.

I think as mentioned earlier, that LOSAT will not be fielded but was a technology demonstrator for a more compact version under development. Having a weapon system like this will prove to be essential for modern day combat, in the near future.

I'm pretty sure the LOSAT and similar KE missiles are impervious to a lot of the Russian ATGM countermeasures. They move far too fast to be successfully intercepted or defeated, AFAIK. I'll find out more about it, though.

The specs do say they are able to defeat heavy multi-plate, applique, explosive reactive armour.

But I doubt it's full potential is made public.

I heard someone say the t-90 has a automated system to detect the sources of incoming lazer sights and then fire back. Well this system sort of makes that useless if the tank is wayyy out of the t90s range.

AFAIR about the T-90 system (also on the Chinese Type 98 MBT) is that it detects the laser rangefinder and orients the turret to the threat allowing the gunner to engage the enemy. I think it sounds like a better idea than it is, since if you've already been lazed there's probably already something heading your way and you've still got to wait for your gunner to identify, lase, and fire on the threat.

Well KE missiles should have no problem with ERA - ERA relies on an explosive charge to counter the explosive penetrator of an ATGM or HEAT warhead. Since the LOSAT and similar KE weapons don't have explosive warheads, there's nothing to defeat. LOSATs are a lot like tank sabot rounds, just as fast but a whole lot bigger, meaning more kinetic energy is expended onto the target.
