From Military.com Fact of the day (*Note you have a user accout at military.com to access features)
Today's Factoid: The Russians tried to wreak havoc on German Panzer divisions during WWII by strapping bombs to the backs of dogs and teaching them to associate food with the underneath of their enemies' tanks. Unfortunately, the dogs only associated food with their own tanks and forced an entire Soviet division to retreat.
If this is true..... rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl

Yes, it's true.
The Chechens should try it since they don't have any tanks.

Hey, the Chechens are anti-oppression, aren't they? Besides, they already have vast arsenals of RD heavyweight mines.

 thats pretty funny, but clever. I know the US navy uses dolphins to detect enemy subs and plant mines on enemy ships and Russia uses walruses (sea lions) to find enemy diversand do th same as the US dolphins. Pretty cool stuff.
The dog thing I'll admit its clever and I wouldn't have though of it, too bad it didn't work.

Yeh pretty clever.
But I like dogs, I'd rather strap a bomb to a commie.

Soviet Union was not the only country to train anti-tank dogs before WW2.

You can shove that Military.com fact of the day in their arse. In fact, the dogs were so effective that the germans started to shoot all the dogs which they saw once they captured any town. And no, there was no retreat of the division due to dogs, as dogs wouldn't be employed together with tank batallions and thirdly, the dogs were trained on the captured germans tanks thus they ran for german tanks.
But the urban legends usually stick so strong that you need both hands to wipe out the thick bs.
Yeah, and don't forget Hitler still walks among us, he has escaped. :D

The use of anti-tank dogs was a miserable failure. When they were first deployed in 1941, the dogs immediately made a beeline for the nearest Soviet tanks.
An entire tank division had to be withdrawn from the combat zone until the infantry had shot all the uncontrollable mine dogs.

I think you're not, and thus I agree with you. Since it would be a bit _hard_ to train dogs taking cover under tanks that couldn't be captured because of a lack of war!
Well, fair enough, there actually was one german panzer division capturing one of these kennels where the dogs were abondond by their "raisers" (lack of word, I'm Swedish after all :cantbeli: ) and once seeing the german panzers they ran towards them blowing up the lead tank and the 2nd tank. The Germans retreated and shot all of this dogs with panzer grenadiers.
But the bit of them running towards Soviet tanks isn't false at all, they did on one occassion but those were dogs that managed to escape from one guarded kennel, where the guards didn't figure they'd go for their comrades tanks. Although, it never made a whole division run away  They just managed to blew up a very low number comparable to the germans losses.

The US tried to use incendiary bats during WW2 the idea being that if they were dropped over Japanese cities they would fly into roof spaces and chew into the little incendiary package attached to them and ignite an acid fuse. All went well during the initial stages of the trails they caught lots of bats chilled them until they were in a stupor, attached little incendiary packages to them and crated them. The idea was that the bats would be dropped onto a test area in a southern US desert where some wooden sheds had been erected and since these sheds were the only suitable roosting site for miles the bats would fly straight into them before day break. As we all now know that incendiary bats were not used in WW2 because in the first and only test the bats suddenly awoke from their chilled stupor on the test plane due to the warm night air in the desert and started to chew into their little payloads leading to the loss of the plane and some of the crew.
The US did come up with a pigeon guided glide bomb that really did work but military brass did not like the idea of a bird brain being in charge of a munition.
