Marines and sailors from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit’s Maritime Special Purpose Force (MSPF) conduct a raid at a building in an undisclosed location in Hagatna, Jan. 31, as part of Training in an Urban Environment Exercise (TRUEX). This type of training is a vital part of the 31st MEU's ability to become Special Operations Capable. On hand were members of the III Marine Expeditionary Force’s Special Operations Training Group who monitor and evaluate the raid.

Urbanized training such as TRUEX provides an opportunity to integrate unique individual and small unit’s skills in conjunction with the MEU’s increased proficiency in the Rapid Response Planning Process.

This raid was coordinated with the local government and the Guam Police Department.

A US soldier stands on the breezeway of a British-built housing quarters now used by American troops January 30, 2006 in Camp Habbaniyah, Iraq. "Habbaniya" was a British-built airbase, created during the British occupation of Iraq in the 1920s and kept for strategic reasons even after Iraq became a sovereign country in 1930. When Iraq staged a coup and declared an alliance with Germany in April 1941, Britain and Iraq (with German help) fought a two-month war for control of Habbaniya, which Britain won. British forces finally pulled out in the 1950s, but the battered and neglected churches, pools, and theaters that remain are reminders of Great Britain's long and stormy experience in militarily occupying Iraq. A Marri tribal guerrilla prepares to fire a grenade launcher at a Pakistani troop outpost January 31, 2006 near Kahan in the Pakistani province of Balochistan. The rebels fired dozens of mortars on Pakistani troops, who returned fire but missed guerrilla positions. The Marri and Bugti tribes have been battling Pakistani forces since December when rebels fired rockets during a visit by President Pervez Musharraf. Rebels say that the Pakistani government takes their region's gas and mineral reserves but gives little in return to Balochistan, the poorest province in Pakistan. Musharraf refers to the guerrillas as "miscreants." (Photo by John Moore/***** Images)

4 minute News clip about Afghanistan, in the end you can see a shootout between drug smugglers and Afghan security forces. Notice the shown weapons and night vision goggles were property of the smugglers, not the Army. 6kg of Opium were confiscated and all surviving smugglers are going to be brought to the gallows.

Interesting side note, they show Iranian walls like water dams across the valleys to stop the intrusion of drug smugglers.

"Die Taliban sind Drogen-freunde. Sie schuetzen die Schmuggler und die liefern informazionen ueber feindliche truppenbewegungen .... zwingen sogar manche Bauern Mon anzubauen stadt Baumwolle oder Getreide."

Very interesting that it now is the Taliban who are the fiends of the Opium trade.

Previously I was led to believe that the Taliban were staunch anti-drug trade, that only Warlords of the Northern Alliance were the ones using it to finance their endeavors. Nice ethical flip-flop.

Btw, anybody recognize those NV binoculars?
