Hey guys, I'd like it if some of you could humor me here with some summer activity advice. If you had the option of working at an internship in Washington DC, possibly at a counter terrorism think tank , or the chance to take a historical tour of various Civil War battlefields including *****sburg led my history professor and various leading Civil War historians which would you choose? If you haven't guessed by now this is where I'm standing right now with my options. On the one hand I love Civil War history an dthat would be a chance of a life time, but on the other hand a Washington internship would open a lot of oppurtunities for me , since I would like to work for the government some day. I have a predicament on my hands :|

I was all set to go to the National Defense Leadership Camp during the fall of 2000? or whatever it is called at the Pentagon in D.C. but we were in the state playoffs so I opted to play football instead of going to it. I really wish I would have gone...if you don't have anything going on...GO

Not many opportunities to do your first option - take it if available. You can tour the battlefields on your own and might even enjoy it more. Good news for you is either option is a great way to spend summer. Go with the think tank b/c that option is less likely to repeat. Good luck either way.

I agree, Civil War Battlefields will be around for... well... a LONG time.
D.C. would be a VASTLY better experence. If you want to work for the Gov, there is nothing better you can do. I'm a military history major, so I understand the desire to go to various battlefields, especially if you're being shown around by the best.
But you can always read what those people have to say. While in D.C., you will not be doing something 100% of the time. If you get a day or two off, you could go to some of the near by battlefields on your own.
I know a number of fellow cadets that used their leave to go to D.C. They said it was one of the best experences of their lives.
p.s. I'm not the biggest Civil War buff, but have you read any books by Dr. Heidler? I had her for a class and from what I understood from the other instructors, she and her husband pump out tons Civil War books. If I had that same oppurtunity with her, it would be a hard choice also, but STILL I would go to D.C. :)

I say option C. Forget the tour and the internship, sounds interesting but save it for later. Buy a lot of beer and a lot of condoms. Then go about spending your summer disposing of them, preferably at the same time.

Screw the intern(read:VOLUNTARY SLAVE) thing. You should go see where more people died defending our Constitution as soon as possible so that you can hopefully learn how far our own people will go to destroy and to defend the Constitution. You need to understand the dark side of Govt. action before you go into Govt. service or you might be a contributing factor to another war in which all the KIA/WIA/MIA/POWs are Americans. I am on my 13th year of Government service, trust me when I tell you, the USG will not say "WOW, he was an intern, working for free, learning the job, cultivating contacts. We should hire him for this position". I'm not going to go into detail because I am not willing to tarnish or lessen the publics faith or perception of its Government and the services it provides. Sorry about the Rant (the older I get, the less I can control my opinion) obviously you must do what you feel is best for you (your soul and your future); GOD bless these United States and those who sacrifice for them.

Just get drunk and become a 'manwhore' for a few months. PM Midtown for the 'how to' info. :D
