Here are the facts as reported by Turkish TV.

NTV television, citing police officials, reported that the suspect told interrogators he killed the Rev. Andrea Santoro to avenge the publication in European newspapers of provocative cartoons depicting Islam's most revered prophet as a terrorist.

and

Turkish newspapers said on Tuesday police in Trabzon had failed to provide Santoro with special protection even though he had received threats in the past, and they criticised the general security situation in the coastal city.

So, who was the dumba$$ who said in the other thread on this subject that there was NO CONNECTION between the cartoons and this murder, and that jumping to this conclusion was completely unfounded?

Andrea Santoro, a 61-year-old Italian priest, was shot dead on Sunday while praying in Santa Maria Catholic Church in Trabzon. Santoro's body was flown from Istanbul to Rome yesterday aboard a special Turkish military plane, and the governor of Istanbul and the city's mufti -- its top Muslim religious official -- were at the airport to pay tribute

ANKARA - Turkish Daily News

Turkish police yesterday detained the suspected murderer of a Roman Catholic priest, a 16-year-old high school student who reportedly confessed to killing the Christian cleric to avenge the publication in European newspapers of provocative cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed as a terrorist.

The suspect, identified as O.A., was captured around 3:30 a.m. in the Black Sea province of Trabzon, where Andrea Santoro was shot to death in his church over the weekend, following an intense search for the perpetrator of the murder.

The government has strongly condemned the killing of Santoro, which coincides with increased religious tension worldwide following the publication of cartoons in some European and other newspapers lampooning the Prophet Mohammed.

It also triggered public outrage in Turkey, where attacks on clerics of other religions are virtually unheard.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan urged Muslims in Turkey and around the world to show restraint over the cartoons, which he described as a trap aimed at portraying Islam as violent.

The slaying of the Catholic priest sparked a strong reaction in his homeland, Italy. Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, a personal friend of Erdoğan and a fervent supporter of Turkey's bid to join the European Union, called on Turkey to neutralize fanatics.

He said the murder of the priest should not be allowed to affect Turkey's EU efforts, although two ministers from his Cabinet disagreed, with one saying that Ankara's EU bid should be buried once and for all after the incident.

by the mafia for helping prostitutes from the former Soviet Union, who are usually brought to Turkey via Trabzon.

The government has strongly condemned the killing of Santoro, which has also sparked public outrage in Turkey, where attacks on clerics of other religions are almost unheard. Turkey sees itself as a bridge between the East and the West and takes pride in its record of inter-religious tolerance.
