EAST SCOUT: Thanks for the compliments on the pics. I try my best to get a good perspective on the photos, and hope to become somewhat professional in this area in the future. The SORD panel is MOLLE compatible. You could rig it to fit other shtuff, but eh.... might be a bitch in the end. I wore it while hunting yesterday, and it's comfy. I was in the desert, 108 degrees outside, nice! I don't like chest rigs much in the mountains because wearing a heavy ruck while climbing makes me breath using my stomach, and the end of a chest rig always ends up hitting me there, bothers the sh*t out of me. Either way, it's a good rig, as long as you don't load it heavy on mountainous things.
DURANDAL: This section of the mountains is clear of lower brush only because it gets 60-70mph winds on bad days. The western section of the mountains has tons of scrub that grows about 12ft high at the highest, and takes hours to move through. Took me about 6 hours to move a mile in one case with only about 3,000ft elevation gain and 4,000ft loss.
I'll post more when I get home from work. Also have a few pics of shooting using it from yesterday. It's a good rig (SORD MFF with Commander).

As you may know, we get LOTS of fires here in Southern Kommiefornia. It helps clear out some of the scrub and lower growing trees.
Or in some cases, it just turns the whole damn place into a graveyard:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y222/TacoDelRio/DSC02012.jpg
There wasn't much brush in the other photos because above about 6,800ft, the scrub doesn't seem to be as common.
Above the treeline at around 9,800ft:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y222/TacoDelRio/DSC01028.jpg
Here's a photo showing the scrub on the eastern section of the range:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y222/TacoDelRio/DSC01582.jpg
Grows to about 12ft tall, usually less. Takes forever to cut through, and a long time to walk around, which usually means climbing up sections of crumbling rock that the plants can't grow on.

Thanks, East Scout, for the new ruck and poncho. They're getting some use. I already tore out the top seams on the ruck from carrying a bit too much weight. Probably going to upgrade to a MALICE pack from Tactical Tailor.
How's the tent working out?
I might go up the same mountain to take photos in respect of the USMC Pilots who died in the mid 1940's. A small formation of Grumman Hellcats crashed into the side of the mountain during poor conditions. A C119 transport crashed in the area as well, and a P-38 Lightning about 12 miles to the west. Might check the C119 out.

Here are some pics of my new TA here in Kent County.(named directly after Englands Kent County)...Its called open land AKA Public land else where. Means I can do what I want on it besides bring weapons..Something new Maryland is doing w/ spare land...The area was onced owned by the Rev War Captain of the Kent County Militia ..His name was Donald Yeates..It 1000 acres of VERY old growth forest and lots of old buildings including barns and some houses......Tested out my new BHI raptor ruck up there......It had huge hills and 80ft hight cliffs on the shore line..and a really big bamboo forest is located down by water..Tones of things to do...
I busted up my jeep there the other day so when I get it outta the shop Ill be heading back up to get some gear muddy and finish some survioval skill and tasks I have planned..So not much in the way of gear to talk about w/ this post..When I get squared away Ill be doing some more E&E drills and have more krapp to talk about..Ill be out on the kayak for now..

This is me today..I went for a Kayak scout trip since the jeep is still busted...I was in an endless endless endless endless swamp of reed grass that seemed to go on for a mile or so..Glad I took my Tomahawk to cut through the parts that had thorn bushes intertwind..The look on my face is genuine..I was right perplexed if not down right beat to death from it...If you can imagine walking through a crowded room and everyone you pass trying to grab you to stop you that is what it was like walking through it (reed grass and mud) w/ my gear on (BHI SAW Rig and BHI # Day Ruck) carrying my dummy M16A2......on top of that it was about 6 inches of mud that was the deer trail...On the bright side i found a few new routes through the woods across the creek...I found a nice antler shed thats now hanging in the war room...I used my new Hydastorm water bladder,,EAST SCOUT LOVES IT!
have used a bladder before but it was El Cheep'o..This one I got w/ my BHI RAPTOR ruck kicks ass! I was hard headed old school canteen slurper but now I apprieciate having the bladder in my ruck..Much easier and saves time..
Anyhow Ide have to say that was thge toughest terrain I have had to go through in a long long time..I think humping up a mountain in PA is easier that fighting that stuff..Hoefuly Ill be doinfg an overnighter there this weekend!

I love my DPM but they arnt as armored against thorns/stickers as US BDUs so I opted to wear the woodland today..the woodland is MUCH warmer (and i felt ever fuking degree of heat) and takes about 3 times as long to dry but the DPM cant hold a candle to armor factor and durability..
The RAPTOR Ruck is great but I havnt given it its proper run through yet..I have gone on some long hikes w/ it and did some low crawling under lucust/thorn trees w/ it but I havnt really run her in yet or given her the course..I imagine it will do fine....I took the BHI 3 Day ruck today...Love that thing.
Sure if you wanna go out its no problem..I had a buddy I met on the net from Austria come over before..We turned out to be great pals..Then I went back there and we did the E&E thing in the mountains around Salzburg..

It'll probably be around 7-10 guys, so alot of water is needed. (I've googled it, but i would like afew other peoples advice.) Also are there other supplies that would be a good idea to bring with such a large group.

You can get the simple Iodine water pure tabs at Walmart. They come w/ the "De-**** taster Tab" that gets rid of the iodine taste...Its comes in a pack of two bottles..One bottle for each tab. Follow the direction on the back. I thinks it one of each tab per quart but dont quote me. Ist late and Im beat..Read the directions.
You might want to get everyone individual canteen so everyone isnt sucking from the same source. Or at least split it up as best you can..If one man has a bug it will fuk up your trip if everyone catches it...
If you wanna go high-tec and get a pump filter system someone else will have to help you there. I dont use those.
Just be sure and take care where you take water from. If you have a hikers map it should tell you where safe water sources are but id even use pure tabs on those.
Hope this helps

East Scout,
I've been able to give my new ILBE a field test. It held up pretty well, decent in comfort. Lots of excess straps, but I solved that problem with a lot of electrical tape.
I know there are side zippers for access to gear on the bottom of the pack or in the middle, but with everything in Willie Pete bags anyways, it still proved a pain and I found myself starting from the top and working my way down.
Honestly...it's a nice pack, but I miss my MOLLE II and it's modular-ness!

If you going to be out there for a while it might be worth investing in a portable water filter. There are some really good ones on the market that weigh a pound or just a little bit more like the katadyn pocket purifier or a doulton portable gravity filter. You can usually find them for about $200-250 which isn't alot between that many people, but provide more than enough water for everyone.

I use a water filter made by Katadyn. The Mini Filter would work, but the Pocket would be better for your large group. Katadyn also make water purification tablets, which work well. I try to avode Iodine , but if the water is really dirty, first filter the dirt out of it.. pass it thru a cheese cloth, towel, or better yet get yourself a Millbank Bag to filter the water thru, then boil the water.. if the water is from an unclean area, (Example from a third world country) you can add Iodine to it.. Iodine does leave a bad taste.. but you could get used to it..

Nevermind, I read a bit more. I'm so accepting. (Read: I'm a nice-guy-dumbass)
This has nothing to do with poaching. Those of us who conduct these forms of activities are very close to the Earth. We take care of nature, and it takes care of us. We treat the Earth with respect. We are hunters, soldiers, ex soldiers, whatever spurred our original interest in this.

Training: Yes, it all is in a way.
Airsoft: Despite the general consensus by morons that airsoft is pointless, some of us use airsoft for training alongside firearms, where appropriate and applicable. Overall, no, this is not for or during what most people know of as "airsoft".
Hunting: No.
Sneaking around: No malicious intent. One does not need to "sneak around" in their own country unless they're doing something wrong, illegal, or they simply do not belong there whatsoever.
Why? Because we like to.

Troll, either meant as a short stubby dirty character who dwells under a bridge, or troll as in "trolling", like someone trolling for bad responses/flaming and stuff. Like fishing.

yeah it seems to be a general consensus around here, ive noticed alot of pretentious characters around MP.net boards. its annoying and makes me not want to be apart of these boards at times. :(
im also noticing a few people around here have little to say about alot. or alot to say about a little, either way.
on the subject of camping advice: whats the best firemakers out there to use, in survival situations? i had a swedish firesteel for emergency purposes but i think it got knicked or lost or something. it rocked, and i'll probably buy a new one. but i was wondering if there was anything else out there to look for. :o

It so happens I can be the most unorganised guy I know and when it comes to packing my bergen, my kit use, and storage I always made a real **** of things and found myself bugging out and regrouping only to realise half my stuff is missing.
After reading through what you guys had to say on, well EVERYTHING I can take note and next time Enjoy my happy camper experience, cheers!

I forgot, I just got this rifle. Its a Spring-Field M6 Scout Survival Rifle in Stanless Steel.(Made in the Czech Republic). Its an over under .410/.22...It also holds extar round in a flip open compartment in the stock..Great rifle! It disassembles into two even parts and Ill be storing it in my Bergan when ever i can.
Hey everybody, this is way back from page 2.
The M6 has a removable hinge pin so you can break it down into 2 parts right? How/where do you store it? Is there a hole in the ammo compartment? What if you lose it/drop it? How hard is it to rig up a spare?
Would it be possible to rig up a lanyard type deal and maybe attach it to one of the halves? I like that it has the .410 shot gun option. Is there such a thing as a .410 slug?

okay up to page 32 now...not meaning to be an ass, but what happens if you shoot the rifle while in the kayak? Broadside especially. I bet with a bit of practice one could compensate. That is a perfect question...Unfortunately there is not much of an oppurtunity to practice that type of drill legally...if i was E&Eing, waterborne, it be at night and if i was spotted, alone, id probably be dead pretty fast anyhow. Offering no sight and sound would be my best weapon...

Armchair: The .22 Hornet model is handy, as it's potent enough to take mule deer and similar sized animals. Much safer than a .22lr against those animals. I don't know about legality of using .22 Hornet in anyone's area.

I speak only from a Texas Perspective, but here state laws apply. I can't carry a rifle or shotgun on my person, but Concealed Handgun laws apply, so I can carry that. Smart move, checking in advance. This is not something you want to find out that hard way. Might also check with a reputable local gun store ower. Sometimes these guys either know the laws or know where to look.

If its a national forest NO..Its federal land and you will get in deep poo if you get cought..States land is a hole other story depend what state your in..
In some cases it depends on whose responsible from park admin. Sam Houston Nat'l forest is run by Texas Parks and Wildlife, so their rules apply even though its technically fed land. It might be same in his case.

I was told by the VA state police that in VA, if it Federal land like a National Forest, it illegal. (we went to GW Nation Forest there).I was told the same thing For where I go in PA. Its the same here in MD too...Im in no way suggesting your wrong..Im just a chicken and when I have doubt, I leave anything that looks like a firearm weapon home..
If you're not taking the weapon for hunting but rather to just train w/ it in other ways, get yourself a dummy gun..That all I use.

In Ohio though they nail you for "inciting panic" if you open carry in any place that is remotely urban...and some rural.

Thought i'd let you guys know what the Wild Life Office said.
Sir,
The Wildlife Resources Commission rules on this topic read as follows:
Possession of Hunting Devices. It is unlawful to possess a firearm or bow and arrow on a game land at any time except during the open hunting seasons or hunting days for game birds or game animals, other than fox, unless the device is cased or not immediately available for use, provided that such devices may be possessed and used by persons participating in field trials on field trial areas and on target shooting areas designated by the landowner, and possessed in designated camping areas for defense of persons and property; and provided further that .22 caliber pistols with barrels not greater than seven and one‑half inches in length and shooting only short, long, or long rifle ammunition may be carried as side arms on game lands at any time other than by hunters during the special bow and arrow and muzzle‑loading firearms deer hunting seasons and by individuals training dogs during closed season without field trial authorization.
As you can see, you may have your shotgun in the camping area only. A pistol may be carried elsewhere on the game land, except during the bow-and-arrow and muzzleloader seasons.
Not sure what the camping area's are like, but i'm pretty sure they're the kind of place for a survival exercise, more like normal civilian type camping.

I put my WD camo Sturm (made in Germany not China) 2 man trail tent up last Tuesday. Its been up since then.I watched the nylon stretch slightly and had to adjust the guy lines..Np..I hoped it would rain..Got a sprinkle on Wed but IMO it wasnt enought to test its rain profomance..It has sealed seems but AFAIK its not treated w/ anything other then a thin coat of laytex type water proofing...Well it rained its balls off here last night w/ thunder storms, high winds and rain, all night into the sunrise today..I thought for sure it would have 2 inches of water in the bottom. Especially since I didnt set it up w/ a ground sheet..
Well I went out to have a look at it was 100% dry inside. I was VERY pleased. I never use a tent w/o a poncho or tarp over it becuase every tent I have used was basicly a bug and wind shelter that was useless in the rain..
Anyhow I took some pics..This tent is typical Eropean style (made in germany) w/ the poles inside. I like that otherthan the little caps i have to keep track of that go ontop the poles and keep the rain out. I have a perminent 550 cord trung on the inside from pole to pole for drying socks and Tshirts over night. I also hang chemlights or my minimag if Im up late doing Admin stuff.
One other thing Im not sure I like is the entrance..if you look at the inside picture w/ the tent bag on the floor youll see the door to the tent. Only one side opens. Its good cause you have lesss zippers to malfunction but its a PITA in the winter and it you're a big guy, forget it..

It was outside in the storm all night w/ rain and wind. The only items keeping it secure to the ground were the guy lines stakes and poles. It was empty and did fine against the gusts..and Im right on the water so they were extra strong..
As for durability. The only problem I ever had was the stuff sack getting a rip in it when I squeezed through some boulders while exploring a mountain top. The poles rubbed the boulder inside the sack and busted through the stuff sack... The bottom is made of a newer type coated nylon I have seen in more modern tents. Its thicker than the roof and walls but not by much so the weight is down but its better armored then the rest of it..When I first got it I set it up and left it in the yard and a rather large branch was on it the next morinig. It had no puncture holes. Nothing has ever come up through the floor either..
Almost everyone in my SERE group had one (7 members)and I dont ever remember anyone ever having a problem
