Race Hate Cleric Jailed
Updated: 15:41, Tuesday February 07, 2006

Muslim cleric Abu Hamza has been jailed for seven years after being found guilty of a series of race hate crimes and soliciting murder.

Hamza was given a host of concurrent jail sentences for the crimes, related to his inflammatory speeches at Finsbury Park mosque.

The Old Bailey judge handed Hamza a seven-year sentence for inciting murder - he was found guilty of six out of nine soliciting to murder charges.

He was also convicted of two out of four charges under the Public Order Act 1986 of "using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with the intention of stirring up racial hatred".

The 47-year-old cleric was given a 21-month sentence for each charge, to run concurrently.

He was also found guilty of possessing threatening, abusive or insulting recordings with a view to stir up racial hatred.

For this he was handed a three-year sentence, again to run concurrently.

He was given a three-and-a-half-year sentence, to run concurrently, for possessing a document - the Encyclopaedia Of The Afghani Jihad - deemed useful to terrorists.

Hamza was told he would serve about half of the seven-year sentence.

In sentencing, Mr Justice Hughes said Hamza had "helped to create an atmosphere in which to kill has become regarded by some as not only a legitimate course but a moral and religious duty in pursuit of perceived justice".

Hamza, from west London, who used to preach at Finsbury Park mosque, made a series of speeches to try to recruit volunteers to carry out terrorist acts.

He was convicted on the fourth day of jury deliberations.

The prosecution alleged he was a recruiting sergeant for terrorism and murder.

In Hamza's talks to audiences at the Finsbury Park mosque, north London, and in Luton, Blackburn and Whitechapel, east London, "he was preaching terrorism, homicidal violence and hatred".

Hamza claimed the case against him was politically motivated. The police had made up a case out of nothing, he suggested.

could not happen to a nicer douchbag

Taking into account time served, good behaviour etc could see him serve 18 months. But he is appealing (legally speaking that is). Wouldn't want him tickling my fancy with that thingy.

Hamza was told he would serve about half of the seven-year sentence.

3.5yrs, any mention of kicking him out once released????

To be honest, they need to hand down stiffer penalties for this kind of crap, you have these loon jobs that preach to other loon jobs, who then go out and do their bidding.
They need to start making examples of these friggin idiots.

7 years but i dare say he will keep himself to himself as i doubt he'll have many friends in belmarsh, so he'll likely only serve half of that and he has already served 18months of his sentance so he'll probably be out in 2 years.

crap really.

he was convicted of so many serious offences yet they all ran concurrently so he only serves 1 of the crimes sentances, he should have to serve at least 3 of the crimes he committed IMO, and he was guilty of incitement to murder so 25 years would have been fair enough, knowing that he loves bin laden and isnt exactly gonna change his views. it should have gone into double figures minimum and none of this only serve half your sentance crap for these sorts of crimes there should be no tollerance, just good old punishment.

on a related note, the guy dressed as a suicide bomber was a drug dealer released early, there should be no doubt that he has no character in him and should go back and serve the rest of his sentance with no hope of early release, its really not hard to stay within the law if you want to.

on the plus side whenever he gets out he'll be back in and then on a plane to the US shortly after where im sure the courts wont be so tame, its a shame they wont be able to push for the death penalty.

and yeah there is talk of revoking his citizenship but its not guaranteed that will happen

He should be sentenced a penalty by the Sharia-law or locked up in Thai prison. Where he belongs.

think he lost his eye and hand during the war in astan against the russains, but again i think the goverment are to blame as in letting him preach his crap for years before doing anything, they closed his mosque down,so he took to preaching in the middle of a road.lets face it over here in jail he will have a easy time, the sooner they ship him to the usa the better.

To the Muslims in the forum a question:

I am sure you must agree that Hamza al Masri is a bigot and you have told us that he does not represent Islam or Muslims.

Finsbury Park Mosque opened in 1988 with room for 2000 men and 100 women. Nine years later Hamza appears on the scene and according to him because he was asked by members of the local community “to help resolve community tensions at the mosque between North African and South Asian prayer-goers”.

He took over completely. His blatant bigotry was not denounced by any of the moderate Muslims at the time either through fear of reprisals or other reasons.

In 2003 the Charities Commission had to step in with the Met to remove him. No one from the local community or Muslim groups had tried to remove him or even help the Charities Commission.

The raid by the Met used Muslim officers so as to make sure that it was carried out with the minimum offence to Muslim sensibilities.

Now what I still cannot understand is why was there such a backlash from the moderate Muslims against the Met and the Charities Commission?

If this person did not represent you and was peddling hate why didn’t anyone boot him out or at least help the Met?

The moderate Muslims did not remove Hamza yet say that he does not represent Islam because he is a bigot. Yet when the Met moved in the moderates complained. Why?

Probabley the same reason the editor who made those cartoons isn't arrested.

Muslims are supposed fo follow a strict sense of "not being judgemental." Some think this only applies to Muslims. Of course - not everyone can be a scholar.

Not judgemental, could have fooled me.

It was their mosque for fex sake.

JFK once said: He's a son of a bitch but our son of a bitch.
And its not a justification, but an explanation.

As for arresting the editor for the cartoons, thats harsh, he didn't violate a law, he offended people, but no law was violated. Besides i think excuses have alreday been made.

Salam.

I was just trying to be humourous.

Honestly, I do not know. You should ask the people who caused the backlash themselves.
