Anyone catch the Munich vs Real Madrid a couple days ago...Good stuff
LISBON (*******) - Fans at the Euro 2004 soccer championship will be tested for drunkenness and those over a certain blood alcohol limit barred from games, Portuguese authorities said on Friday.
Fans who show a blood alcohol level of 1.2 grams per liter will be turned away from stadiums, said Lieutenant-General Leonel de Carvalho, head of a government security committee for the 16-team tournament in June.
"The test won't be made on everybody, but in exceptional circumstances," he told a news conference after a meeting with UEFA organizers on security.
Portugal's legal blood alcohol limit for motorists is 0.5 grams per liter. A level of 1.2 grams per liter is considered a crime.
Carvalho said tests would be made at stadium gates with equipment similar to that used to check drivers' sobriety.
Portugal is hosting the tournament at 10 stadiums and organizers expect about 500,000 fans to attend.
Jacob Erel, director of UEFA's competition operations, said the main challenge was crowd control, such as access, transport and alcohol bans.
Portuguese authorities needed better coordination, especially since many of the stadiums were new, he said, before adding he had "confidence about the competence of this country to perform in the best way during the Euro 2004."

Drunk fans not getting in? Then you will have riots before the games instead during the game.

Exactly my thought. They will sit at a pub and watch the game on the bigass
TV there instead, and when their team win (or loose) they will go out and fight
with the other fans. It feels quite inevitable. These people are not there for the
football, but to fight. Lowlifes.

How much do you have to drink to hit 1.2 grams?
I've seen some bad stuff happen at soccer stadiums. Its kinda good they get all the drunkards that will start **** out before it happens. For christ sake get wasted after the game, would it kill you to wait 90 minutes? I mean I love beer, but I wouldnt get absolutely smashed at a sporting event...I kinda would want to remeber it.

Well maybe im a different breed, I've been to a few sporting events in Vancouver. None of them I really drank enough to get rowdy, the rowdiest it ever got was that one time the Vancouver Grizzlies (now memphis i think) were beating the Lakers...That was rowdy, but other then that there has been no drunken fighting/overly drunk people I've seen.
Maybe I should go to the Molson Indy ;) ...thats if its still happening...

the top two teams in the Turkish league are playing tomorrow
Fenerbahce v. Galatsaray
you think British Hooligans are bad, you wait and see whats gonna happen tomorrow
tickets cost minimum $1,100 for this match. i bet there will be riots even before the match since most wont be able to afford it
you havnt seen footbal maniacs until u see a big league Turkish match
molotov cocktails, shish kebab skewers, gyro knives (practically swords)
Go Fener.

turkish vs. english hooligans is always the worsed
Why? Just because english hooligans are retarded enough to run around in
Istanbul in groups of 4-5 people and crying "Eeeenglaaaaaaand, turksscsh
are foookking filthy doooggs Eeeeeeenglaaaaand". Then accidents happen.
German hooligans can be quite nasty as well.

Those fans cracked me up, I sat next to a couple of those fanatics in Week 1 this past season against the Titans. We kicked their asses so they were quiet, just one or two fights.

what happened was, a few brits got piss drunk and started insulting the women in the area. and a bunch of the men decided there would be none of that in thier neighborhood, and took the brits to task.
The turkish government can screw them, the police can be brutal, the economy will crumble. Turks wont riot or protest over these things. But if you say something about soccer or women, thats when Turks will fight.
It is well known how protective Italians are of their native women, but never, i mean never say anything about turkish women in the presence of turkish men. They can get downright stupid, ie violent.
Speaking of today's soccer match, Fener won 2-1. i feel sorry for the Galatasaray fans. they had to get to the stadium 8 hours before the opening whistle and had a 20 foot high fence surrounding thier little corner in teh stadium. Pretty slow game, but a few nasty fouls and the typical fan pandemonium.
hopefully the authorities will let galatasaray fans to exit first, i feel bad for the cabbies and bus drivers. they usually get thier vehicles overturned and burned by the football rioters.

can anyone verify this. i remember reading in the paper a long while ago, that a team in Bulgaria actually installed a moat, with alligators and all in between the field and the fan stands. it sounds ludicrous but i dont think it is impossible. besides, i dont think a few alligators can stop some hooligans.
