When I was 15 years old my Mohawk was so God Dam big I had trouble going through doorways. The 80's were a fun time to be into punk.

Man, those were the days. Remember the dead painter story from the movie "Decline of West. Civ."? They left the guy's body out there for three days... oh, man. That west coast punk scene was pretty nuts back in the '80's, wasn't it? Black Flag, X, Dead Kennedys...all the major punk bands were west coast, come to think of it. Congrats on making it out alive.
My roomate in college was the drummer for the band "Reagan Youth" and they've recently gotten popular again here in NYC, which is kinda cool to see.

The gap between punk and emo has shrunk a lot of punk bands same the exact same things emo music says just differently. The 1980's was an era for punk which can never be duplicated punks were rebels and misfits who formed a coalition of music that said fvck everbody that isn't with us we don't need society and all its faults. Something similiar to the early days of rock and roll or snowboarding in the 80's. There is no modern rebel only mainstream rebels.

Just as R&B (and later rock & roll) rebelled against "How Much is that Doggy in the Window?", just as punk rebelled against art rock and disco and electronic crap, something will counter today's pop music sooner or later.

they are quite ok, but I ve been a big fan of Blink182 for years now.
I just cant stand this stupid "kill police, rape the state, **** politics, scream scream scream* ****.
Floggin Molly is also one of my favourites. I saw a couple of punk bands live, like nofx for example, and they had a good performance on stage, but I am still not a fan
The most important thing for me is a good melody where I can feel some sort of professionalism, not kids playing in their garage with lack of musik knowledge. I know its fun to do that, had a band with some friends for a couple of years, but only for fun
Hmm i kinda grew out of this music a long time ago, but sometimes i still go to shows. A friends band invited the U.S.Bombs into their rehearsal room for a private gig which was really funny, they supported their shows here. Saw Agnostic Front some years ago, Murphy's law, Dropkick Murphys with their old and later new singer but like ten years ago i went to every show of the most bands above mentioned, the likes of NOFX (around 94-97). It became kinda random.
I'm also into different kind of music, hip hop (always been, but not that poser stuff) and some electronical music. I'm not into that dark metal and xyz metal stuff, but some old hardcore or punk was always nice. And will always like the Ramones or old Suicidal Tendencies stuff for example! edit: forgot Social Distortion!

Seriously, if you refuse to listen to a certain band because "OMG they are so (Insert genre here)!"... then you are really only denying yourself the opportunity to experience some very good music. I definitely have my favorites, but I find that if I keep an open mind I am able to find a lot of talent and something from almost all genres that I enjoy listening to.

same here, you are definitely right. Every genre has its good and bad bands and I think nothing beats the power of a classic orchestra, no mega bass techno and no heavy metal band

I didn't say I don't listen to punk, I listen (http://www.last.fm/user/antons85/) to every genre there is, except [insert any word]-metal since it just doesn't appeal to me. Rancid, Bouncing Souls, NOFX, Good Charlotte, Blink 182, Sum 41 and Offspring have a couple good songs each, no doubt about that. See I can be cool too, I know what's real punk.
I don't like the mainstream bands though, if a band sells more than 1337 records, I stop listening to them. Cause then they're mainstream, and I don't listen to mainstream. Cause I'm hardcore.
When I said punks are emo's that don't know they are emo's I ment people who wear depressing clothes and pierce themselfs and are pissed off and complaining 24/7. ie. "True punk rockers"
They're just as emo as "real" emo's, I guess that's a matter of definition though. I call everyone emo who acts/dresses/talks depressed 24/7.
The Pogues.
My favorite band! Not exactly punk though. :)

Well i hate real punk musik (screaming some **** about how police and the state sucks, bla bla kill them, bla bla... idiots)but I am a big fan of punk rock
I don't agree with you, at all.
But atleast you realise there's a difference. And a big one too!
Rancid, NOFX, etc ... isn't real punk/oi. It's punk-rock, poppunk, whatever. I guess it's cool to sing along and everything. Real oi! is where it's at, the little unknown bands who perform in squatted houses and everything. And in some places, it's trying to revive (I'm lucky, we have a couple of good bands in my small town). But punk is dead, gave its last heartbeat a while ago.
I see people claiming punks not dead while listening to Blink182 and Sum41 saying they're punk because of their album-covers (yeah, thats right!). People who have no idea about what punk really stood for, and saying they really are the best ****ing punk ever alive while knodding their heads on some techno ...
Well, really, good thing knives are illegal here. For me it gives a bad name to people who really try to live conscious (sp?) and on their best. Even though when they can't succeed (in my view), they're getting drunk on Jupiler (owned by Inbev) brewed my the biggest globalised brewery in the world.
I whish I was born 20 years earlier though, I guess. I don't care about people calling me a punk, I don't. Whenever they do I just tell them punk's dead, the dream's over. It's too late. Alltough it is better to light a candle than to complain about the darkness.
Anyways, for me, everything you need to know about punk you can find thrue Crass. Those guys represented everything that had to do with punk, kinda same with Oi Polloi (coming to Leuven in Belgium in march!!).
Oh and BoyElroy, that record seems awesome! Paid vacation by the Circle Jerks must be one of the most awesome songs every made!

for me punk rock is feel good music and it reminds me of summer, sitting at some music festival, drinking beer all day. I dont care about some highly intelligent political statement.
punk is the only music that i can get to get me motivated to go and do something fun. i listen to alot of punk while computing and when playing playstation. i usually use trance for driving purpouses. i love punk though. i listed the bands i did because they are but a few i listen to.

I was a punk back in high school, and the scene was totally mixed with ska in Chicago. For like $5 you could see ten different bands on the weekends. It was fecking awesome, but then Green Day got popular and fvcked it up for the rest of us when the pussies began showing up who wanted covers of the ****ty Green Day and Blink 182 or whatever songs.
These were the same assholes who would go into the middle of the pit to try to get closer to the stage and then get all pissy when people started jumping on 'em and kicking 'em. Goddamn pussies.

They walk around NYC and 'pose' a bit. And Stigma has a german football(soccer) shirt on. "Schalke 04" he got that from all the people who go to their shows here. Many of the hardcore fans (oi, too) here are hardcore football supporters, too. And Schalke04 is particular popular in that scene.

i dont really agree with u on that... post 90's punk just got better, faster, better sounds, better recording, more bands. I prefer some more modern bands than i would older. Im personally into more faster, harder street punk. You just cant beat some of the stuff out there today.p-)
That's cool and you're right...it what matters to each individual....if it works for you....then great.

The only punk/ska band I l9ike are the pioneers of the genre, the only good ones, The Offspring, grew up listening to their music and still love it along with harder music like Metallica, Pantera, and older stuff like Pink Floyd and stuff. But The Offspring will always be the first band I ever got into, and they are far from that whiny wannabe emo crap.

Punk really is dead. But there are a lot of great bands from the 70's-80's to listen to.

Even better than Suburbia was Repo Man. It had a very respectable soundtrack too.

way too many bands to list.
when you've got an AFI cd cover tattoo'ed onto your arm, yeah you've been in the sceen.
I got that when I was 17, back before AFI turned all faggoty emo gay evan gay banging gay like they did on the last two albums.
most of the bands that have been listed by some people on here, I'd consider emo garbage (even though they do have *some* decent songs, most are crap songs though)
probably one of my more favourite bands I just started listening to is 'a dozen furies' wicked awesome stuff.
I've been trying to find 'it was a good day' cover that h20 did on ares, I've found the video. I just can't find the song itself to listen to! gah!

Subhumans - Where's the Freedom
We're going backwards
Into the sin of self-neglect
What do we stand for?
It's very easy to forget
The protest marches
Is it the done thing to object?
So where's the freedom?
Your conscience hangs around your neck
Where's the freedom?
We're going crazy
WIth paranoia fear and greed
Accepting standards
Believing what we hear and read
nd then we think we've
Sussed out a new reality
But is this freedom
Just another hand from which we feed?
Where's the freedom?
We're going nowhere
In vicious circles we gyrate
The new subculture
With cliches painted on their face
We cannot see past
The elite barriers we create
We reject the system
But put another in its place
Where's the freedom?
Most probably best set of lyrics I ever read.

Got into an argument about what punk is with a "true punk" yesterday, she had the lip ring, shaded hair, ripped jeans, band tee, whole nine yards.
She told me that all of these (favorite bands) are not punk:
-Bad Religion (!?!)
-Ramones
-Social Distortion
-Clash
-Dead Kennedy's
-Black Flag
-Rise Against (pushing it, I know, but a ****ing great band, good live too)
-Anti-Flag (she had never heard of them)
...well at least see knew who Flogging Molly was (kinda). I've been bumming around lately trying to find some new bands on myspace and purevolume because everything on the radio just sucks. I enjoy alot of it, but so many of the poppy bands do nothing for me. I had heard alot about Op Ivy, distillers, and rancid recently but hadn't heard any of them, looking into them and they are pretty good, but i lean more anti-flag sound that ska sound, still good stuff.
btw...the only true punk band alive today is Blink-182! *sarcasm*

im pretty active in the scene where i live, not to many good underground bands come through but still. my favorite band is probably defiance from portland, at least their older stuff. crucifix, skeptix, destroy everything, amebix, antischism, behind enemy lines, blok-1a, ss-kaliert, antidote, total chaos, the ghouls, bloodclots, discharge. there are so much more. these are just a few really good bands, some old some new. mostly street punk, tharsh, hardcore.

I saw Lawrence Arms 4 or 5 yrs ago at a tiny rec room in a suburb around here. They kinda sucked but I guess I wouldnt be too pumped to play a show in a closet sized room with 13 yr old douchebags all aroudn

Yeah, seeing them live isn't really the best way to listen to them. It took me a long time to get into their recorded music though, I had one of their records for about 2 years before I actually started to like it. 'The Greatest Story Ever Told' is an amazing album.
