So you wouldn't find it to be dramatic at all if this happened to your tank? Oh wait, you airsofters and e-warriors don't have tanks, so that kind of explains it I guess p-)

Swedish Leopard 2A4 by the way if someone wonders. I wonder how that happened...
Very easy. The tank drove over a deployable bridge when the right beam of the bridge, as can be seen in the lower right corner, slipped away, the tank driving on it became top-heavy and toppled over.

Yeah, it was quite a mess. The girls that slept/went out with German soldiers got their hair cut off with old rusty scissors...

Cinoeye - I have deleted your post for reasons which must be obvious to all. That is a clear contravention of forum rules posting graphic images direct rather than linking to them with a warning. Any further such behaviour will earn you a spell in the MP.Net exile resort free of charge.

Disgraceful. I'd bet most of those so enthusiastic in degrading these women spent most of the war doing jack ****, while the real heroes of the Resistance were shouldering the burden. Fsck those smug bastards!
This wasn't justice.
You can't know what else they did in the war. Maybe they did help the resistance, maybe not. Anyhow I can't feel sorry for this piece of sh*t, and you shouldn't either.

Before Actually p-) All the Airborne deployed troops started dropping around 0100 on Jule 6, 1944. Beachlandings started from 0630 onwards.
I went to normandy a few months ago. When we were coming back from visiting Pointe du Hoc, we had to stop for a piss. We had lots of "wow" moments during the holiday, but the biggest one came then; I found myself standing in a ditch, at night, everything was dark. Hedges all around me, and a field after those. I knew we were close to the sea, because I could smell it.
And it was quiet. Like in the bad movies, "too quiet".
I can only imagine the thoughts of those men, when they landed alone, not knowing where they were, or who or what was behind the hedge.
I think lots of people think of the dday landings as one big operation that lasted a day. Think of the days the Allies were still deploying, when the outcome was still far from certain.
Imagine for a minute it all went wrong.
The infantry hitting the beaches decimated, driven off
All those paratroops captured, on the run.
How many years before they could attempt it again?
Jesus Christ we were lucky :|

Remagen bridge, this is how it looks today:
http://www.ph.utexas.edu/%7Emireles/Euro/Germany/Remagen.jpg
Today, the famous bridgehead forms a Peace-Museum, which houses many interesting exhibits including interesting artifacts and moving testimonies of the participants and witnesses of the battle. The museum was well visited and is respectuflly revered as the ending of that painful chapter of the 20th century. After being shelled, bombed, straffed, and attacked by eleven V-2 rockets, the bridge collapsed into the Rhine six days afer it was taken, but not until an entire division crossed the exhausted bridge.

I have always thought this to be one of the most amazing photographs...
Too bad it was staged. I was disappointed when I learned about that.
I think its still an amazing photograph even if its not real, in the sense of capturing the actual moment of violence.

very sad photo, I couldn't imagine the guilt that the bombers felt.
For hitting the other bomber or for firebombing an entire residential district?
Oh man these are difficult to see...but of course i appreciate everyone's contribution. incredibly moving. thanks guys:hug:

Scaned this up cause I always find this picture amazing. Im not sure everyone would see it as dramatic but with me it almost hits you with a shock of reality that sometimes might be lost in historic looking black and white pictures?.

A dramatic photo I'd like to see is like one scene in Band of Brothers where the kids were on top of some bridge and the just surrendered German army is marching in the middle for as far as the shot shown. A photo of the real deal would be nice.

German sniper i beleive. He killed a US soldier and wounded another, they took him hout and moved in. The reason the guy is on the floor in the next photo is because they recieved more sniper fire as they went in to check the body..
Might be wrong...so many books so many pictures....
There are better quality versions somewhere. And a colourised one...not that it need colour.

I saw this picture in a big book full of WW2 photos and i recall it saying that it was an American soldier that got hit and they're moving in to check if he's still alive.

You can't know what else they did in the war. Maybe they did help the resistance, maybe not. Anyhow I can't feel sorry for this piece of sh*t, and you shouldn't either.
And how can you know what she did?
Anyways, this one is pretty cool.

I just read in a magazine that statistically it was safer assaulting a Japanese held island in the pacific than being a bomber crew over Europe.

But you are pretty sure it's a HK G3?
Thank you.

Unnamed individual who shot two Turkish Ibex bucks on the run one fine day in December 03, just west of Baghdad. M4A1, Knights Armaments suppressor, Trijicon reflex. The hides and heads of both were successfully FedExed back to the states where they were professionally mounted. It must really suck to be in the big Army and not be able to enjoy yourself on occasion. BTW, this same hunter went out on occasion with his bow, taking several other species that went on the spit.

It´s the other way around, the CETME Mod. 58 was licensed by Germany and contracted to HK, who modified and improved on the design which led to the G3.
If these guys in the picture are Iranian soldiers then the rifles most definately are G3s, because they have the Diopter sights (CETME has a different sight) and, more importantly, Iran acquired a license from HK to build G3s (before the Islamic Revolution).
The handguards in the picture also look similar to these HK ones:

Besides... it wasn't hunting, and it wasn't even sport. The beastie and his brother were on only about 500 acres... fish in the proverbial barrel.
Our compound, just SW of BIAP, the one with the palace up on the hill, was a game "preserve" under the old regime. Plenty of odd and lovely game about.

Your humwee windsheild was not armoured? Good that your eyes are safe, did you wear goggles? 2003, National Guard. We spent the year driving canvas top humvees with no armored windshield and no doors at all because those canvas doors offer no protection and only slow down the jumping out of the truck reaction times. In fact I was not wearing goggles, I was damned lucky and I know it. I gotta tell ya though, I never left the wire without eye protection after that.

In Herat province, self-immolation is a fairly common method of attempted suicide among women. One year ago, Zahra, 20, doused herself in cooking oil and lit herself on fire because she was depressed. Her husband was beating her and preventing her from seeing her family. Zahra survived, legally divorced her husband and today lives with her mother. The scarring caused nearly complete loss of mobility in her neck.

I just finished "Flags of our Fathers" by James Bradley, I highly reccomend this book, one of my top 3, Ira Hayes' story is very sad, he was an outstanding marine, but had a hard time in real life, What I found most interesting about him was, the 6th original flagraiser was thought to be Hank Hansen, and this was beleived for a while even though the 3 living flagraisers had said it was Harlon Block Out of the blue Ira Hayes hitchiked hundreds of miles to Harlon Block's mothers house, stayed for a few minutes to tell her that it was her son in the picture(which she knew all along..he is the one at the base of the pole)then left. If it wasn't for him Block would probably never be known as one of the flagraisers. Well that's my quick tidbit of info.

This raising of the flag is not the first one. There is another picture showing the first one. In this picture you se a lot of armed soldiers around the flagraisers because the fighting is still going on. This picture was aranged afterwards as a propaganda effort.
EDIT/ here is a link to that picture: http://www.iwojima.com/raising/lflagi.gif

03-19-2006, 05:50 AM
It wasn't a propaganda effort. They were replacing a smaller flag with a larger one.
....... It was so small that it couldn't be seen from down below so our Battalion commander, Lieutenant Colonel Chandler W. Johnson [USMC] sent a four-man patrol up with this larger flag which is the flag you see on the poster for the 7th war Loan Drive.
http://www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq87-3l.htm
Rosenthal took 18 photographs on Iwo Jima that eventful day.****** Among them was a shot posed by men of the 28th Marines around the flag. When queried a few days later by his wire service picture editor as to whether "the flag raising picture" was posed, Rosenthal, unaware of which picture had had the sensational reception in the United States, thought the editor meant the one which actually had been posed. Out of Rosenthal's affirmative reply to the editor grew the misconception that the flag raising picture was posed.

There's an old TV series called the World at War. In one of the episodes towards the end it has a similar sequence; but the bombs hit the wing instead... I leave the results to your imagination.
The "World at War" has been re-released on DVD as a boxed set and if you get the chance, pick it up - its an excellent series.

Cpl. Lonnie Young kneels next to his wounded comrade in high spirits, despite the fact there is a bullet lodged in his back. Young, a Defense Messaging System administrator by trade, learned first-hand that every Marine is a rifleman when the base he was working on in An Najaf, Iraq came under attack by approximately 800 anti-coalition militiamen, April 4, 2004. Young fought alongside seven Blackwater Security personnel in an effort to secure the base.

Isnt this the same incident as the blackwater 2 video? The video where they are fighting on a roof top against a crapload of insurgents.
EDIT: Looks like the bullet came in from his left side and traveled to the middle of his back. What a lucky man.
Three of Robert Capa's famous D-Day photos that were printed in Life magazine:
"Men of the 16th Infantry Regiment seek shelter from German machine-gun fire in shallow water
behind "Czech hedgehog" beach obstacles, Easy Red sector, Omaha Beach"

If I am not mistaken this photo was retouched later because you could see 2 or three looted watches on the uncovered arms of the lower soldier ;)

Whats the story behind this?
This incident added a change to CLS and Medic tactics. The guy trying to pull him away was a medic, the area was hot and the threat was not surpressed. The medic was killed along with the original casualty. The guy who ran out to help the medic ran back to safety.

any information when did it happen? early stage of conflict/initial push of OIF in 2003 or later in 2004/2005?
