PatricVadec, if you have a chance, can you check to see if you might have the set of pics of the German soldier being shot in the streets of Stalingrad? It's a set of pretty famous pics that were taken as a German soldier was running through the streets, he was shot in the back by a Russian sniper. The pics pretty much show him before and after he gets hit (he collapses to his knees, then falls forward). I can't find them online for some reason. Thanks in advance if you have them.

Iraqi children act out a hostage-taking scene, mimicking what they've seen on TV. In an insurgency stronghold like Ramadi, this is equivalent to playing "cops and robbers," locals say.

There's an old TV series called the World at War. In one of the episodes towards the end it has a similar sequence; but the bombs hit the wing instead... I leave the results to your imagination.
The "World at War" has been re-released on DVD as a boxed set and if you get the chance, pick it up - its an excellent series.
Isn't that a bit dumb?

Staff Sgt. Henry E. Irizarry was killed when a roadside bomb destroyed his Humvee. A man detained at the scene was tried by an Iraqi court and given a 15-year sentence. (U.s. Army Photo)
For Soldier, a Posthumous Day in Iraqi Court
BAGHDAD -- As Staff Sgt. Henry E. Irizarry lay dying last December after a roadside bomb tore apart his Humvee, his platoon fanned out like seasoned homicide detectives to comb a nearby stretch of pasture in the town of Taji north of Baghdad.
Soldiers found a wire leading from the charred blast site to a field, where someone saw a head peeking out above scraggly reeds. The man ignored a warning shot; gunfire directed at him missed. Soldiers gave chase and cornered him in a nearby house, where they took him into detention.
They swabbed his hands with a kit designed to detect explosive residue. He tested positive.
As a result of their efforts -- described in court documents, after-action reports and interviews with several participants -- and the work of a team of Army lawyers assigned to the case, the Central Criminal Court of Iraq on May 25 sentenced Ziyad Hassan to 15 years in prison. It was just the second time that an Iraqi court has found an insurgent guilty of murder in the killing of a U.S. soldier and the first conviction of a roadside bomber. One of many I'm getting ready to post in a new thread. Just wait, I have some really riveting stuff coming; I've assembled about 150 pics so far.
EDIT: This is another picture, but all accounts of it that I've found state there is a strong belief that it was staged by reporters:

Not staged. IIRC, it was from a training manual/poster/something, I definately know that it has to do with keeping your gas mask on.

Definitely a G3 built under license in Iran. It has the characteristic 'slimline' forend and rotary dopter rear sight.
http://img1.imageshack.us/img1/6637/Iran_01.jpg
The G3 started production in Iran in 1967. The license to manufacturer Heckler Koch products expired during the fall of the Shah due to sanctions.
The Iranian's produced the G3 rifle including the MP5 without license afterward by Defence Industries Organisaion (http://www.diomil.ir/armament/pistols.htm) (D.I.O.). Many Iranian MP5's "Tondar" have been captured in Iraq.
In this video from 2005, you can see Iranian police women using the MP5.

If I'm not mistaken they're on the US border. Its kind of dramatic to see heavy equipment like that guarding the border where as a few years ago the heaviest thing you'd see was a Ford Bronco.

Not to turn this into a thread on another topic, but where has there been a case in the past year of that happening?
The call in stuff. If they are armed (and I am sure many or even most are) its for their own protection, not from the illegals themselves, but the coyotes and gang members running them across the border.

Actually, a big chunk of them are highly educated businessmen and small business owners and ranchers. Some might be what you call "rednecks" but most of them are normal everyday people armed with semi-automatic rifles, hunting bolt guns, and pistols...not full automatic weapons.

As another said they are armed for self protection... Many particpants are ex law enforcement and well screened. The U.S. is being overrun with illegals. Our border has been shot at frequently by drug runners, smugglers, Mexican military. Is it any wonder people are pissed?? You should not make snap judgements of that which you no LITTLE about. The night before the burial of her husband's body, Katherine Cathey refused to leave the casket, asking to sleep next to his body for the last time. The Marines made a bed for her, tucking in the sheets below the flag. Before she fell asleep, she opened her laptop computer and played songs that reminded her of 'Cat,' and one of the Marines asked if she wanted them to continue standing watch as she slept. "I think it would be kind of nice if you kept doing it," she said. "I think that's what he would have wanted."

so your saying he should feed this kid? when he himself probably only had a few bits of food on him, whats to say this kid would live if he fed him then left anyway, whats to say that a hundred other similar children would come to him for food, its his job to take pictures not to go around giving out food aid to people, that should be the job of governments and NGO's like oxfam and the red cross not a photographer, famine is still going on in africa and is killing thousands of people as we speak, it sickens me to the depths of my stomache that governments around the world arent doing more to get rid of poverty.

re That vulture pic. Kevin Carter was South African photographer, his full story is detailed in a book called The Bang-bang Club by J. Silva and G. Marionivich.
The baby was actually just outside an Aid station and was probably not left to die alone like the pic shows. That being said, Kevin Carter himself was haunted by it for the rest of his short existence thereafter, and thus took his life probably because of the guilt he felt. To be honest there's not much he actually could have done, given that the child was so close to an aid station anyway. He explains it as simply the right picture at the right time. The vulture disappeared quickly after the picture was taken, but the message is quite profound.
It's a good book, heartily recommend it to anyone who has an interest in freelance photography, particularly within South Africa during and after the struggle.

When 2nd Lt. James Cathey's body arrived at the Reno Airport, Marines climbed into the cargo hold of the plane and draped the flag over his casket as passengers watched the family gather on the tarmac. During the arrival of another Marine's casket last year at Denver International Airport, Major Steve Beck described the scene as one of the most powerful in the process: "See the people in the windows? They'll sit right there in the plane, watching those Marines. You gotta wonder what's going through their minds, knowing that they're on the plane that brought him home," he said. "They're going to remember being on that plane for the rest of their lives. They're going to remember bringing that Marine home. And they should."http://img102.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc217&image=98588_1204146.jpg

Actually, a big chunk of them are highly educated businessmen and small business owners and ranchers. Some might be what you call "rednecks" but most of them are normal everyday people armed with semi-automatic rifles, hunting bolt guns, and pistols...not full automatic weapons.
x2, my Uncle used to be a ranch owner and reporeted wetbacks crossing through his ranch to the BP all the time, he never shot them or did anything to them. He had lots of guns available and in his house, but they were for protection.. Dumb redneck? He sales chemicals now and makes a **** load of money...

Staff Sgt.
No, some stuff is either OPSEC, PERSEC, or I'm not possitive so I opt to lean to the side of caution.
Bad guys view this site often, very often actually, as they do a lot of military oriented websites. It's better to be carefull and not give them any more than they alreay have.
Some users should take note.

I just finished "Flags of our Fathers" by James Bradley, I highly reccomend this book, one of my top 3, Ira Hayes' story is very sad, he was an outstanding marine, but had a hard time in real life, What I found most interesting about him was, the 6th original flagraiser was thought to be Hank Hansen, and this was beleived for a while even though the 3 living flagraisers had said it was Harlon Block Out of the blue Ira Hayes hitchiked hundreds of miles to Harlon Block's mothers house, stayed for a few minutes to tell her that it was her son in the picture(which she knew all along..he is the one at the base of the pole)then left. If it wasn't for him Block would probably never be known as one of the flagraisers. Well that's my quick tidbit of info.
My grandfather is in that book.. Look up Leo Ryan in the index. They were best buds. I think he's on page 158.

You can get explosive residue on your hands just by touching debris from an explosion, perhaps he was just trying to find something useful in the wreck.

Seeing that they usually clean up the wrecks right after it is extinguished (I'd imagine this one caught on fire) and that there is a patrol watching over the wreck, I highly doubt he was "looking for something useful" in the wreck.

re That vulture pic.
I just think there are certain situations where the rules of journalism or intenational rules dont apply. I myself could speak from my soul and say that I would rather die or lose my job and thrown in prision to help that kid how selfish.

Well duality, like I said, the photographer committed suicide shortly after that picture was taken. He was well aware of his own guilt, and it ultimately led to him taking his own life. Not much worse a punishment you can hand down to him.

In Northern Europe reindeer is a half-wild domestic animal and deer/caribou/whatever refers to wild deer. April 2nd 1982, Royal Marines surrender to an argentinian tactical diver.
This is a powerfull image, and I guess it might have shocked the general public in Britain.
As an argentinian I cannot help to feel some kind of "pride" when I look at images like this one... or the one that shows the two A4, attacking the Coventry at a really low altitude...
Obviously I do not agree with the military government that decided to go to war with the brittish based on the "idea" that they will not respond... but I'm proud of those who fought and died for my country.

seems tough but its reality and we all have to face it.
Maybe not dramatic to any of you but for me they were some of the most intense moments of my life. Sorry for the sh*tty shots but we were usually kinda' busy when I tried to utilize this little disposable 35mm camera I had. Except for the boy by the humvee. I just had to take that one at a Memorial Day thingie we did. The kid could barely stand with all the gear on.
1. Enemy tank, aimed at the berm it was hiding behind. It still blew up quite nicely.
2. Kid at a presentation
3. Taken directly above my head, our close air support checking to see if we were friendlies or not. These guys scared us worst then the enemy. They seemed to of killed some of our own scouts.
4. I think there was some sort of MTLB or BTR-50 type of tracked vehicle if I remember correctly. Anyho, it blew up quite nicely. Gunner, HEAT, PC.........Fire.

Just went through this thread and wow. Some pics stated the "great" things of war, some the hellness of it all.
As a father of 2, it's really hard and sad to see children as victims of war. As an injured civilian or a child soldier filled with hate. Just makes my heart cry. Did'nt have that problem before but when you have a kid of your own, you feel these things differently. Those who have children know what i mean.
Whats the history with this photo? WW1, French soldiers right? Were black soldiers treated equally or what? How many blacks were there in WW1, any US soldiers?

Great thread, mostly great powerful pics. But some aren't actually dramatic. What's dramatic about the B2 pics for instance? Or in this pic:
http://www.lifelibertyetc.com/users/rustedace/Iraq/op%20Hound%20dog/Hound%20dog%20(64).JPG
Dramatic?
Maybe I didn't get the point of the thread:)
But still some pics are really great.

Yes, black troops fought in French units, black Americans fought in French units.
There were black U.S. troops, but if you thought the level of discrimination was bad during WWII, WWI was worse...
Without looking through some of my books or doing a Google search I can't tell you off the top of my head the units...

POW should be treated properly, wheather he is nazi, commie, VC, alien or whatever.

After Hurricane Katrina, the Cajundome in Lafayette, Louisiana was designated as a shelter for evacuees. Army MP's and Air Force SP's were sent to help with security at the shelter. I took a few pictures as Marine CH53's dropped them off. These two are the best of the group.

True true. But what may be dramatic to one can be ordinary for another. My post for example will be not so dramatic for the most , but for others it is.

Dramatic to most = dramatic
Dramatic to a few = dramatic to easily shocked, overly impressive, or highly-specialized-interest people
The latter is not what was meant by 'Dramatic' - but the original poster did open up the boundries by stating "It's simple: Post any military-related photos that are dramatic, surreal, epic, or just make you go "Holy sh!t that looks cool!" I'll start:"
