Dramatic to most = dramatic
Dramatic to a few = dramatic to easily shocked, overly impressive, or highly-specialized-interest people
The latter is not what was meant by 'Dramatic' - but the original poster did open up the boundries by stating "It's simple: Post any military-related photos that are dramatic, surreal, epic, or just make you go "Holy sh!t that looks cool!" I'll start:"
Never mind I'm too lazy to explain. You got me wrong. Wait maybe I should explain before you say "see I was right he can't even explain" :)
If a picture depicts an American soldier getting shot, I for one coudn't care less this would be the same if it was an Iraqi soldier etc, etc, etc. But if you see a picture with one of your own country men die it suddenly gets a lot closer.

So in your opinion kicking the POW is nice?
POW should be treated properly, wheather he is nazi, commie, VC, alien or whatever.
And no, I ain't nazi supporter.
YES, I consider kicking young Nazi fanatics good! End.

Yep, a little Abu-Grahib is also no problem.
And BTW Abu-Grahib is also about dealing with detained people ... incorrectly.

I'm not saying that Abu-Graihb was right, but bitching and moaning about someone getting a little kick in the ass to keep him moving is just plain naive. War is fought by rough people, don't like it, too bad, it takes a rough person to kill people for a living, if you can't deal with a little rough action then go be a peace activist.

Looks like he's crying though, his odds may not be so good. But this is very distasteful, lets stop making these comments.

Dramatic?
Personally me - I remember the Kipling’s “Boots. Infantry Columns”, and my former duty in Afgan.

RSM's and CSM's in our (Canada) military would freak out if these were Canadian troops in this pic. Pant's not bloused, not wearing helmets, C6 (M240) being carried the way it's being carried, in our leadership's eyes, these guys would not be soldier no more! That's how pathetic our leadership and they're priorities are over here. You would think, finding the enemy and killing him, avoiding IED's, staying safe and getting home while getting the job done would be more important. Sorry, had a bad week and looking at this pic reminds me of everything I just said. I always tell my family and friends to check this thread out, because there is a side of war (past, present, and future) you'll never see on CNN, CBC or FOX.

Picture taken just after a car crash, Norwegian Independent Brigade In Germany.
Though there were some firearms accidents, and during my Grandfathers tour in the Brigade in 1952 an unfortunate accident while training with live handgrenades, vehicle accidents were the main cause of the few deaths in the Brigade during it's existence (1947 to 1953) particularly on the allmost daily run from their HQ (Schleswig-Holstein area) to Denmark to collect post. The German cobbled roads were particularly murderous when wet.

God damn it, that was Warburton-Lee's ship when he attacked the Germans in Narvik in 1940 (and presumably named for Victorys captain Hardy at Trafalgar?) Warburton-Lee was the first to receive a VC during the second world war, and sadly he was one of the few RN commanders who showed the Nelsonian tradition of the Royal Navy during the Norwegian campaign. (I finished reading a large study on the war in Norway April-June 1940 today, and on the note of the RN, excepting for a few incidents including atleast 3 separate VC awarded for action in the Norwegian Campaign to RN personel, i am sure Nelson must have turned over in his barrel of rum more than once, seeing the many oportunitys to further destroy German capital warships or to wreck further havock in the German Destroyer, U-boat and transport fleet lost, wasted or ignored.
Oh bollocks, that's the wrong H.M.S Hardy

doesn't get anymore dramatic than innocent civilian casualties.

Have seen a video about it, pretty hard. Both pilots jumped out of the cockpit to save their lives and one GIGN fell down from the stairs as well. They got the plane after several unsuccessful attempts and in the aggregate three hostages were killed, all of the motherfuc*ing Algerian terrorists and nine GIGN members were wounded.

i dont think any hostages where killed in the assault itself. they where executed in the Algeria. and and only one pilot jumped through the window breaking his leg(s?) but he still managed to "walk" away from the plane

My best guess would be some kind of "retaliation" for a guerrilla attack or something like that...
Sorry my italian isnt the best so i cant really say what the captions say.. maybe someone who speaks better italian can say more to the pics. Got them from this site:

Ok, on the second picture, the german words say something like this:
---
I'm the
bandit
-Name-
and was involved in x murders
and x armed raids.
---
This kind of treatment was typical for captured guerillas, so now I'm sure this was a retaliation for some guerilla activities....
Yes, thats correct, but i think the women were shot for another reason..
Fakum12
08-30-2006, 03:31 PM
No, I'm rather sure that the women were some kind of "hostages" taken after some kind of guerilla action.
Why? Simple... The italian word "ostaggi" means "hostage".
Yes, but i dont think that they were some guerilla fighters.. i believe that this could had been some kind of revenge action.

For the pictures of the women being executed the Italian captions were:
1) Also women were moved to the wall
2) The soldiers are about to raise their rifles
3) Another group of five are put into coffins
According to the captions the people that were being executed were apparently some sort of resistance fighters who had been captured, tortured, humiliated, then executed.

partisans? maybe in Trieste area- Italians had a death camp there
Edit: It seems to have happend in some slovenian town. I saw the name Celje and some others. Women were quite common in the resistance force those days. And the poster (http://www.muzej-nz-ce.si/ENG/razglas.html) In Slovenian it reads:
"Many officialls and police officers were victims of crimes commited by communist murder gangs in the land of people loyal to stajarska. Day 22. july 1942 the following people in Cillia (probaly "Italienized" word for Celje) were SHOT."
Looks like its a propaganda poster to scare the growing resistance.

Yup, taken during the U-137 crisis if I recall correctly.
There's a folder in which I've saved pictures, video and audio surrounding the incident - if anyone's interested I'll see if I can upload it.

What's the story behind this pic?
U-137 a.k.a "Whiskey on the rocks" was the Soviet sub that ran aground outside a secret naval base in 1981. During the "crisis" Viggen fighters did fly-by's on a regular basis as a show of force.

Whats the story behind this?
They are Marines taking sniper fire, the Marine taking the pics is well known for these photos, They did an article in Leatherneck Magazine on him. It shows a Corpsman trying to rescue a fellow marine while doing this another marine gets hit by the sniper he runs back to help him. The other marines all lay down fire on the marine and eventually save one of the marines. One was killed but the other made it out.
Hope that helps would give you the specifics but i lost the magazine somewhere.

Yes, they are from Ia Drang battle. The fifth is from Dak To, I think.
The soldier of fourth picture is Col. Moore, the officer played by Mel Gibson in "Once we are young and soldiers" (I think this is the title of the movie in english...).
Notice the patch from 7th infantry división, the Moore's former unit during the korean war.

How do you know the planes crew died??? I've seen way worse aircraft crashes than that and the people still lived. So there is a good chance the pilot made it.
Never mind, I didn't see the caption that the other guy wrote. RIP.
Not a military picture or perhaps dramatic but I just love it...

The real ruler [of W.W.II Croatia] was Ante Pavelich, a zealous Croatian nationalist and fanatical hater of Serbs... Pavelic lead a terrorist group called the Ustashi in a brutal campaign against Jews and Serbs in Croatia.
"A good Ustashi," he told his men, "is he who can use his knife to cut a child from the womb of its mother." According to an Italian correspondent, Pavelich once put a wicker basket on his desk - filled with 40 pounds of eyes gourged from victims of the Ustashi.
