The man with the gun was Nguyen Ngoc Loan. He was South Vietnam's Chief of National Police. He left Vietnam after the war and owned a pizza restaurant in Virginia but closed it in 1991. He died in 1998.
The man that he shot wasn't a civilian who backed the communists, nor was he just a VC regular. The man's name was Nguyen Van Lem. Van Lem commanded a revenge platoon in Saigon that would murder police officers or their families. In fact, Lem was captured near a ditch where more than a dozen cops and their families were executed. The photographer confirmed this report by the South Vietnamese.
So what happened in that notorious picture was revenge. Van Lem was behind the killing of civilians, and Ngoc Loan decided to execute him on the spot for his actions.

Interesting. I hadn't heard that before.
Here's a quote from TIME Magazine by the photographer, Eddie Adams:
The general killed the Viet Cong; I killed the general with my camera. Still photographs are the most powerful weapon in the world. People believe them, but photographs do lie, even without manipulation. They are only half-truths...What the photograph didn't say was, 'What would you do if you were the general at that time and place on that hot day, and you caught the so-called bad guy after he blew away one, two or three American soldiers?'
How do you know you wouldn't have pulled the trigger yourself?
Apparently, Adams even apologized to Loan's family for the photograph, feeling guilty over ruining his reputation.
Funny how certain facts are omitted in the retelling.

the pic looks @ WWI (just guessing) during that war a new category of wound was classified, the french call them "men without face". In some instances a victim had a part of his face blown off yet he somehow survived, its amaizing how people like that could survive for years to come when reconstructive surgery did not exist.
A human being is a remarkably hard and at the same time easy animal to kill,

If you have read any books on war/combat or have watched any documentary about it, its amazing how much the human body can withstand. Sometimes guys can go forever and not notice that they are "hit" unitl someone says they are, or they feel a "funny" sensation from the wound. And the more I think about it and see it, the grateful I become for their sacrifices.

Actually this isn't the whole story.... That Van Lem was a leader of a revenge platoon was stated by the South Vietnamese police a while after he was shot, when the protests (as result of this picture and the short movie of this execution) began to rise. And the photographer that confirmed the reports later admitted, that he only read the police report, never saw anything with his own eyes, nor spoke the witnesses.
But Van Lem's widow confirmed, that he was a VC - although she doesn't knew what he was doing. She didn't saw him since the beginning of the Tet Offensive.
The official US view on the this is that it's highly likely that Van Lem was a Viet Cong, but it's also very likely that Nguyen Ngoc Loan violated the Geneva Conventions. But no investigation was started because captured VC were subject to South Vietnamese laws and Nguyen Ngoc was a South Vietnamese official.

I watched an excellent documentary many years ago about a famous Vietnam war cameraman named Neil Davies, the documentary was called Frontline. Neil Davies witnessed this incident and stated that Nguyen Ngoc Loan had been informed shortly before he executed Nguyen Van Lem that Nguyen Van Lem was responsible for the stabbing murder of his young neices and nephews.

This reporter caused a lot of damage to his country and to our armed forces.
At least _he_ may claim he did not know.
Those who keep doing it today know full well what they are doing, and what the consequences will be. And they keep doing it every day, mostly out of personal greed. I do not have much respect for most of today's journalists.

Whilst unsuccesful in attempts to assasintae General Nguyen Ngoc loan, the Viet Cong did manage to break into the house of one of his best friends, a Colonel in the National Police. They murdered the Colonel, then turned their rage on his family, slitting the throats of the colonels wife and six young children, several of whom were General Loans godchildren. South Vietnamese Marines catured one of the Viet Cong agents at the site. The man was armed with a pistol indicating he the leader of the unit. He was brought to General Loan, standing near teh An Quang pagoda, HQ of the militant Buddhists and the Cp for the attack on Saigon. When General Loan asked where the man had been captured, the marines replied. The VC agent gained immediate immortality as General Loan, unconcerned by the clicking of the Photographers' cameras around him, abruptly put a Pistol to the killers head and summarily executed him.

No infraction is warranted at this point.. simply be more selective when posting graphic content.
Just to make things clear.. no specific ban on posting graphic pics of dead soldiers is going on here. Make the photo relevent to the topic. Simply posting images of dead people doesn't fit the theme of the thread.
I will however edit the thread title so that people understand that some material may be unsafe for work.

WWI
Shrapnel.
It will do a dam-dam on the human body. Most casualities in both world wars were caused by artillery.
Towards the end of the first world war Germany was running out of metal so they were packing their AP/shrapnel shells with clock springs, glass eyes and false teeth.
Can't imagine having a wound looking back at you.

This is one of the most moving memorials I have ever seen. I took a picture of it when I was there (Dachau concentration camp/museum), but this was off the web. Walking around that place was a very moving experience, and this statue captures the torment of all those people held there... so, for me, pretty dramatic.

10-28-2006, 01:47 PM
Here's another one, maybe not dramatic, but moving in a similar way to Dachau. I saw this one early evening, the sun was setting and it was really quiet. The lion lying, sad and tired, with a broken arrow sticking out of it's side. For some reason, another very moving experience (I know, I know, "moving" doesn;t equal "dramatic", but the the other pictures made me think of these. This is a war memorial for Swiss soldiers at Lucerne. Again, not my pics, taken from the web, but still powerful

The following photograph is of a German killing a Jewish mother and child, it was later sent home to Germany through the mail. On the back of it was penned: Ukraine 1942, Jewish Aktion, Ivangorad. (Ivangorad was the name of a town in the Ukraine).
Seems like they didn't mind their families bearing witness to their crimes.

Ehm, BS? (well, im 98% shure that it is bs)
The soldier actually is protecting the mother and the child while they are jumping in a dugout. The other (not displayed) part of the picture shows a hostile soldier trying to shoot the mother and/or soldier.
Ill try to find the whole picture, but have no idea what to look for in google.

That is very dramatic and chilling footage - seem to remember reading about those pics sometime, think it was very late in the war.
This is a long thread so maybee someone has already answered this...
The picture was taken by Robert Capa a very famous war photographer (he bought it on a landmine in Indochine 1954) in Berlin 1944. Capa wrote "I had the last picture of the last man to die. The last day, some of the best ones die. But those alive will fast forget!" Supposdly that american solider killed by a sniper was the last person KIA in the europeean theatre (how knows for sure..).
p-)
false hope of protecting, the nazis would make the mothers hold their babies tight so that they use one bullet on twoThat is only half the picture. In the other half prisoners are digging a grave.
Also, there is some speculation that it was a posed picture.
It certainly does get the point across though.

For hitting the other bomber or for firebombing an entire residential district?
I hope they felt bad about the hitting the bomber,....as for hitting a residential district,...what the photo show below the bomber isn't where the ordinance is going to go,...that target what ever it was is about 3 to 5 miles out in front of the bomber depending at what altitude they were flying at. If they did hit a residential district,...who gives a rats ass!
Germany declared war on the US after we were attacked at Pearl Harbour. Though now called the Powell Doctrine,...General Sherman in the US Civil War called it,...war is hell and the faster and more leathal you bring 'hell' to the enemy the sooner it stops and the more lives of your troops you'll save.
That's ugly to say,...but that formula works. I'm a combat vet and I'm alive today because the men I fought with brought 'hell' fast and often.

Add to that that the driver isn't going to be able to see where he was going, and I think you'd have a point.
If they just arrived and were stopping, I could see everyone looking at the camera's direction, and yelling for help (or yelling the patient's status) as the stretcher may be coming from the same direction, but again - where did they come from that the driver didn't need to see out the windsheild?

The caption says that she was hit from the building across the street. It also says that she is being evacuated, they probably all jumped on and told the driver to drive. Definitely not staged.

Wrong on both accounts: Not all are looking at the camera. And "strange expressions on the face" WILL occur when you are talking/screaming and someone makes a still picture.

I served for everyone of those reasons and there comes a point in every soldiers frame of thinking when you realize this sh*ts for real and yes, you would die for your countrymen. Some people serve others just think about it comfortably.
In WWII in Germany the Großdeutschland division had a motto, "Gott, Ehre, Vaterland". God, Honor, Country. That holds true for nearly all soldiers.
I know this is really, really late, but I had to add my 2c to this (just so you know, Eindhoven, I'm agreeing with you). I served in the Army for 9 years, enlisting at age 17. I didn't sign up for college benefits, and I didn't sign up because I was poor and had no other option. I didn't sign up to fulfill someone else's plan for my life. I didn't sign up to spite people that have chosen not to. I joined because I love my country, bumps and all, with all my heart and I wanted to serve. And I knew that, if that meant taking a bullet, then so be it.
If I had to go back and live my life over I wouldn't do it differently...except that I would have applied myself a lot more and chosen to be a paratrooper.
Just wanted to share. I really like the pics I've seen here. Very moving and, speaking as a photographer, very inspiring.

I'm not sure, but I think it's linked with the helicopter's pictures (a famous one).
He was the gunner of a Huey or something, many of his mates had been shot by Vietcongs, and on one of the pictures you see him shouting to the pilot with one of his mate badly hurt.
And so here, he is crying because he learned the death of this mate.
But as I said, I'm not sure. I'm certainly mixing with another story...
