The contrast of white and green; the lines north and south and then the east-west lines of the ship in the background; I just think this is "cool".

Destroyed Serb M-84(I don't know with what). I think this pic was taken somewhere in Slavonia(eastern part of Cro). Shell that penetrated this tank caught rounds of this tank(or maybe later fire), but it sure wasn't bombed by a plane.

Dunno, I wonder that myself also. I assume the tank turret flew up in the air from it's own tank shells that were fired up while the tank was burning. I'll ask on the local boards and hopefully come here with an right answer p-)

No, use your brain. That man next to the tank does not wear a Serbian uniform, while it should have had in case of the war in 1999, as the NATO troops did not enter Yugoslavia's territory during the bombing.
I think the soldier is either Croatian (the Croats use standard U.S. woodland BDUs) or a Bosnian. It's definitely not the war in 1999.

AFAIK best anti tank weapons at the beginning of war were AT-3 Sagger and soviet T-12 anti-tank guns from captured JNA stocks.

yes.. these two soldiers could be from herceg bosna forces or abih.. anyway as you said it could be anywhere in bosnia...
I know that few serbian units in 1999 used some others BDU uniforms than the serbian standards, but the probaiblities that this pic is from 99' is still very low...

i remb this photo it was from a balkans book , this is the result of an man portable AT weapon ( dont know what ) this tank was a serb tank and was ambushed by a bunch of commandos hidding in the sourrounding buildings , there was about 4 tanks knocked out in this area ( you cant see them in this pic ) but all of them look pretty similar turrets blown off

Well I guess only a rocket, or a direct hit from another tank or anything like that (even a mine?), on the side/front/back may make the turret jump off.
A bomb would have crushed the tank.

hello,im new to this forum and i saw this thread and all i can say is wow.
u guys are not sure about the two tank pictures where the turret is blown off...
the first one where the two guys kneed down inforont of the turret is taken by Erich Micheletti,i have his book, the backgroundinfo on this picture :
"Croatian soldiers observing the Serbian lines from their positions by the Livno road.Their enemies are only few hundred meters away."
the second picture is also taken from Erich Micheletti or Yves Debay.
picture was taken in 1991 near vukovar, the tank got hit by anti tank missle, the rocket hit the ammunition.
i dont have a scanner but i have some very interesting pictures from the balkan war,i will have a look for taking the pictures from the book.

Quite dramatic. The ship is about to sink, but still its crew stands there saluting during the time they lower the flag. About 15 minutes later the ship turns over and takes half of the crew with it into the sea.
wow bro. this pict is just CRAZY.
i remember when i was around 13, i went to my friends house and his dad was a well known photographist and he had full books of war pictures, and most of them where picts taken directly during execution and you could see the bullet getting tru the body slow motion on the pict, thats the 2nd time tthat when i look at a picture i can almost feel their emotions, thats sick!

Yup, Josip is right, this pic was taken in/around Vukovar in 1991. Croats in Vukovar had only M80 'Zolja' & M79 'Osa' anti-tank weapons. From these two, only 'Osa' was capable enough of penetrating M-84 tanks.
M79 'Osa':

It is a BFA. I read somewhere that in fact special wooden bullets are used and they are shredded to sawdust by the fluted thing attached to the muzzle.

This is particularly dramatic This is high-Altitude medical experiments in Dachau. In order to test how pilots who have to eject from their planes will fare, SS doctors simulated high-altitude conditions in a chamber, and exposed people to these conditions. Many prisoners died during such experiments. In order for the simulation to be as real as possible, the prisoner is hung by parachute straps. This is possibly too upsetting, so I will provide a link instead

I don't think the grenade is active, its a standard issue U.S. "pineapple" grenade, so I doubt it was thrown by the enemy. It was probly just dropped by a soldier on accident (could have fallen from an equipment bag, or pouch). Just my guess anyway.

Einsatzgruppe member kills a Jewish woman and her child near Ivangorod, Ukraine. 1942. Credit: Jerzy Tomaszewski, Poland
Mobile killing units (Einsatzgruppen) followed the German army during its invasion of the Baltics and the western Soviet Union, first killing Jewish men, Soviet political commissars, and others considered racially or politically dispensable. Months after the invasion, Mobile killing units turned to the execution of women and children. Open air killings continued in areas of eastern Europe during 1942 and by the spring of 1943, Einstagruppen units A-D had killed over million persons.

Obviously it's hard to tell for sure, but please note the riding pants, M38 field-cap style headwear, and that the foresight of the rifle is closer to the muzzle than it would be on a Type 99.

Well, I guess I identified the photo incorrectly, but there were equally horrific killings in Korea as well.
Ordered or not, Koreans with ties to the throne or political power were killed off. The remaining Koreans were forced into indentured servitude or something similar. Women were used as house slaves who's duties included sexual service. Japonese were going to either kill off or breed out the Koreans. I am sort of generalizing the situation, but that sort of gives you a hint of the environment back then. Keep in mind that not every human life had value to the asian culture back then. A woman's life meant less than a man's so a slaves life meant barely more than cattle.

It was the same in the russian army with people from Ukraine. Or German with Poland.
And still know (I'm not talking anymore about germany-poland and russia-ukraine), as Orwell said: all animal are equal in rights, but some more than the others. Or something...

WTF was the oka crisis??? never heard anything about that...
In the summer of 1990, all eyes were on the small town of Oka for a showdown between native people, Quebec police and eventually the Canadian army. The violent clash was triggered by something as simple as a golf course and as complicated as native burial traditions. The Oka Crisis drew worldwide attention, catapulting native land rights into the spotlight.

I will admit it was wrong for these German soldiers to be killed by these Yugoslav partisans, I will admit that. But this seems to be a very one-sided story basically making the Yugoslavs look bad. Maybe those German soldiers have been killing a bunch of Yugoslavian people and this was the Yugoslavians payback. A little more info. would be nice.
This just kind of reminds me of the famous photo taken during the Vietnam War, showing a South Vietnamese Officer (military or police, not sure which) killing a North Vietnamese criminal during the Tet-Offensive. Which was very misleading and made the man doing the "summary-execution" look very bad. read on: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tet_offensive

wasnt meant to be offensive,I would think alot of soldiers would fight to the bitter end than be taken prisioner and executed.Obviously they thought they would be treated better than what they got.

Why should it matter where I was in 1990? If you must know I just graduated high school and watched it on the news just like I'm sure you did! Oh pardon me, perhaps you were a member of JTF2 doing covert recon on Oka at the time.
And not evey native blockade makes it into your livingroom chachi. Our local gun range recently got shut down by a native blockade and the local RCMP just let it happen. Then there is the local Bear Mountain development 1km away from me that is under yet another native land dispute. So yeah, you did miss a few things.

Marine Sergeant Ty Ziegel already had his life planned out, he would marry his girlfriend Renee Kline upon returning from his second tour of duty in Iraq.
But one fateful day a suicide bomber hit his truck, tearing apart his body and making him among the 20,000 soldiers that have been wounded in Iraq. He was blind in one eye, had a shattered skull, and most of his skin was burned off. Renee lived with Ty at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas for a year and a half, sharing Ty's every hope and fear. Their relationship became stronger than ever, and Ty and Renee moved back to their hometown in Illinois in July 2006, and got married in shortly thereafter.

I dont like these standoffs much either.I have a couple Indian buddys and they get treated pretty dam good, college education paid for and monthly money for who knows.Point is they really dont have alot to complain about they ruin their own housing and bitch about needing new houses and money and they are given the opportunity for education and getting off the reserves, there are exceptions and good hard working folks that get off the reserve and take opportunities.

Accorindg to several sources including the book "Canada's Secret Commandos JTF2", JTF was there in an "unofficial" capacity as "observers". I also found this "The commandos (JTF2) also deployed to the Oka and Cornwall areas to deal with the threat from the Mohawk Warriors, and although it is not known exactly what they did there, it is believed the unit conducted surveillance missions against the natives involving in gun smuggling and organized crime. "
But then again I'm not an expert on JTF or the CF so Critter and Pete031 may be correct as the timelines dont seem to add up. Perhaps it was JTF's predecessors - RCMP SERT? From what you guys are saying then maybe it was a contingent or what was the begining of JTF, or whatever there was before JTF was formed. I'm just going by what I read and was told...both of wich could be incorrect. Thanks for the info!

No, they would not have been there. Maybe SERT, but JTF2 didn't exist at the time. Although when the Quebec provicial police screwed up their raid, it became a military matter. So the police would probably sat on the sidelines while the troops did their thing. You can speculate all you want, but the Canadian military had no tier 1 special operations unit at that time.

That's extremely moving. Very unfortunate for him but it's nice to see she stood by him and didn't think differently of him. Better than a woman I know who greeted her husband at the hospital after he recovered from chemical burns with divorce papers.
indeed, very moving. hopefully they can get along with this.

I feel bad for them both. At the same time, I have tremendous respect for both of them.

What I love is that some of our best are coming back like this and trying to get along with what life has handed them, hopefully surrounded by those that love and want to help them...meanwhile the Presidents daughters are STILL out getting drunk as ƒuck and partying.

My post was just to comment the fact that, there are some soldiers in Irak who really want the job to be done. By job I mean, bring peace/stability into the country, well what they are here for.
And some others who don't seem to get it...
It was a good feeling? That was awesome? You want to do it again?
Pardon me but... well, it's the human nature I guess but... jeez!
