Whats the story behind this?

Grr, I can't find the link for this one but remember reading it awhile back. If I remember right, one soldier/marine was hit by a sniper in Iraq and another went back to get him. The rescuer was hit so another guy went in to try and recover them. As he was coming back with one of the guys on his back, he was shot and killed by the same sniper. Only one of them (I think the second guy that was hit) made it out alive.

That fella is a Korean soldier IIRC (in Vietnam)

That's right. We can recognise a division patch on his left
shoulder.

He was in a Tiger division just like my uncle.

And it looks like a very first time in the Vietnam War cos he
got a M1 Garand rifle instead of M16.
At the first time to send S.Korean troops to the Vietnam, U.S
military didn't issued M16 rifle. So, inevitably S.Korean troops
had to use M1 Garand or M1A1 carbin and B.A.R.

The war was getting hotter and hotter, finally U.S military issued
M16 rifles and also S.Korea acquired to make M16 rifle under licenced
condition after the war.

So what would be a Japanese soldier's motivation for shooting aside from being given the order to shoot?

I know the pic has been described as WW2 eastern front and as a Japanese soldier shooting a Korean. I dunno where the pic is from, but to answer the question of "why would a Japanese soldier do this?":

From killology.com LTC David Grossman:

"The Japanese were masters at using classical conditioning with their soldiers. Early in World War II, Chinese prisoners were placed in a ditch on their knees with their hands bound behind them. And one by one, a select few Japanese soldiers would go into the ditch and bayonet "their" prisoner to death. This is a horrific way to kill another human being. Up on the bank, countless other young soldiers would cheer them on in their violence. Comparatively few soldiers actually killed in these situations, but by making the others watch and cheer, the Japanese were able to use these kinds of atrocities to classically condition a very large audience to associate pleasure with human death and suffering. Immediately afterwards, the soldiers who had been spectators were treated to sake, the best meal they had had in months, and so-called comfort girls. The result? They learned to associate committing violent acts with pleasure.

The Japanese found these kinds of techniques to be extraordinarily effective at quickly enabling very large numbers of soldiers to commit atrocities in the years to come. Operant conditioning (which we will look at shortly) teaches you to kill, but classical conditioning is a subtle but powerful mechanism that teaches you to like it."

Dark psychology at work! It's scary how something like this could become formalized training.

Sorry to threadjack. I love the pictures on this thread.

Marine Sergeant Ty Ziegel already had his life planned out, he would marry his girlfriend Renee Kline upon returning from his second tour of duty in Iraq.

But one fateful day a suicide bomber hit his truck, tearing apart his body and making him among the 20,000 soldiers that have been wounded in Iraq. He was blind in one eye, had a shattered skull, and most of his skin was burned off. Renee lived with Ty at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas for a year and a half, sharing Ty's every hope and fear. Their relationship became stronger than ever, and Ty and Renee moved back to their hometown in Illinois in July 2006, and got married in shortly thereafter.

And, looking past the rather new and nicely-made magazine pouches (I can see a magazine in each), he also has on a black nylon "duty" belt - one that is attached over what looks to be one of the tactical "rappelling" belts (looking at the buckle).

I'd say this guy was planning on staying alive to kick some ass.

X2, no need for this. Some people here browse this site at work and don't need these kinds of images out in the open.

Plus....2.5. Don't direct post gory or graphic images. If you must post such things, only provide a regular link with a large warning as to what to expect when someone clicks on it. We're not interested in surprises here. Users that continue to post such images after a warning will be banned.

For those who appear to grasp reality you sure have an issue with accepting it yourself. I agree, the pic should have been linked, no doubt about it. It appears that the issue here is not a posting violation but more the content itself. Hence my comments about reality. There's more than a fair share of folks here who talk a tough game and yet can't handle some graphic photos involving real conflict with real death. I'm not saying that those who can stomach a graphic image are any better at being "chair borne rangers" than anyone else. The ability to accept these images, and correct the poster for violating forum rules not for photo content obviously have a better grasp on reality than most. Its ironic to see such complaints about graphic content on a MILITARY PHOTOS site which has many operational photos. The equipment we all enjoy on this site and the accompanying text, video or photos are direct participants in the fine skill of killing other humans. Lets not bull**** each other. It appears a bit hypocritical for someone to proclaim their love, approval, or desire to own, operate or simply appreciate military hardware without the full knowledge of what that tool does and/or was designed to do. At the very least its ignorant posing.

The thread clearly idicates that some content is not work safe. On a side note, if you're viewing this at work, shouldn't you be working? Perhaps you're viewing it on your lunch break. If this is the case and this website is considered acceptable than where's the concern? On a final note I couldn't agree more with anothers post that a graphic image isn't necessarily a dramatic one.

I think your missing the point 22.5, its more of the if we want to see it we will find it, and the people that view this site at work shouldnt have to see something THAT graphic. NWS for this thread so far has just been a body

That img was not near normal NWS, and whither a person be squeamish or not matters none. I understand reality just fine (and to your other comment im in rural texas, i hunt damn near year around) but I dont come to this site for reality check, i come cause I like militaria as I am sure most people here that did not like the picture.

I can enjoy the tools and understand what they can do, but do not have to see it when viewing a thread.

It all really boils down to a respect factor, the mods and admins allow the images if it is linked only, thats the respect factor. we choose to view it if we wish, but it is not thrusted onto us.

I agree with you. I admit it wasn't something I was looking forward to seeing either. It doesn't belong in here. AS for NWS, it really makes no difference. Something NWS is probably something very graphic and a dead body is less than NWS in my opinion. Compared to the crap that's on the T.V. a lot of these images are very tame. Much like T.V. you have the option of not viewing it as well as the option of seeking out such items.

The photo was no where near dramatic unlike the two which Canuck Ferrier just posted, outstanding!

Whats the story behind this ?

It was discussed in length a while back. I'm not sure what the thread was, otherwise I'd give you a link to it. I don't think anyone had any legit info on it, and there wasn't a consensus on it as best I can recall.

IMO, it's a WIA/KIA Marine on the left (boots seen) who was pulled out of the way. Possibly the former position of insurgents, provided the AK on the ground.

Again these are not for the light hearted..If your offended by such images please go no further!

Is that last picture of Sgt Major Jacob Vouza, of the Brit constabulary on Guadalcanal? The chief scout who was captured by the Japanese, tortured and bayoneted repeatedly, left for dead but managed to crawl to USMC lines and warn them of an iminent attack?

I read about him in USMC Guadalcanal history. From a book on the battle:
"On 7 August 1962, Sergeant Major Vouza sent the following message to the First Marine Division Association:
'Tell them I love them all. Me old man now and me no look good no more. But me never forget.' "

Apologies if I'm wrong.

The wikipedia page on him:
Sergeant Major Sir Jacob Charles Vouza, MBE, GM, was born in 1900 at Tasimboko, Guadalcanal, British Solomon Islands Protectorate, and educated at the South Seas Evangelical Mission School there. In 1916 he joined the Solomon Islands Protectorate Armed Constabulary, from which he retired at the rank of sergeant major in 1941 after 25 years of service.

After the Japanese invaded his home island in World War II, he returned to active duty with the British forces and volunteered to work with the Coastwatchers. Vouza's experience as a scout had already been established when the U.S. 1st Marine Division landed on Guadalcanal. On 7 August 1942 he rescued a downed naval pilot from the USS Wasp (CV-7) who was shot down inside Japanese territory. He guided the pilot to friendly lines where Vouza met the Marines for the first time.

Vouza then volunteered to scout behind enemy lines for the Marines. On August 20, while on a Marine Corps mission to locate suspected enemy lookout stations, Vouza was captured by the Ichiki Detachment, a battalion-strength force of the 28th Infantry Regiment, led by Colonel Ichiki Kiyonao. Having found a small American flag in Vouza's loincloth, the Japanese tied him to a tree and tried to force him to reveal information about Allied forces. Vouza was questioned for hours, but refused to talk. He was tortured and bayoneted about the arms, throat, shoulder, face, and stomach, and left to die.

He managed to free himself after his captors departed, and made his way through the miles of jungle to American lines. There he gasped a warning to Lieutenant Colonel Edwin A. Pollock, whose 2nd Battalion 1st Marines held the Ilu mouth's defenses, that an estimated 250–500 Japanese soldiers were coming behind him before accepting medical attention. The subsequent Battle of the Tenaru was a victory for the Allied forces on Guadalcanal.

After spending 12 days in the hospital, Vouza then returned to duty as the chief scout for the Marines. He accompanied Lieutenant Colonel Evans F. Carlson and the 2nd Raider Battalion when they made their 30-day raid behind enemy lines at Guadalcanal.

Sergeant Major Vouza was highly decorated for his World War II service. The Silver Star was presented to him personally by Major General Alexander A. Vandegrift, commanding general of the 1st Marine Division, for refusing to give information under Japanese torture. He also was awarded the Legion of Merit for outstanding service with the 2d Raider Battalion during November and December 1942, and the British George Medal for gallant conduct and exceptional devotion to duty. He later received the Police Long Service Medal and, in 1957, was made a Member of the British Empire for long and faithful government service.

After the war, Vouza continued to serve his fellow islanders. In 1949, he was appointed district headman, and president of the Guadalcanal Council, from 1952–1958. He served as a member of the British Solomon Islands Protectorate Advisory Council from 1950 to 1960.

He made many friends during his long association with the U.S. Marine Corps and through the years was continually visited on Guadalcanal by Marines. During 1968, Vouza visited the United States, where he was the honored guest of the 1st Marine Division Association. In 1979, he was knighted by the United Kingdom's Queen Elizabeth II. He died on 15 March 1984.

Note: I originally thought the caption was incorrect. After some searching, I found the full caption located here:

http://www.worldpressphoto.nl/index.php?option=com_photogallery&task=view&id=628&Itemid=137&bandwidth=high

Samar Hassan cries seconds after US troops shot and killed her parents in an incident in Tal Afar in northern Iraq in January. Soldiers opened fire after the car driven by Samar's father failed to stop as it approached their dusk patrol. A US military statement said troops trying to halt the car used hand signals and fired warning shots before firing directly at the car, killing the driver and front-seat passenger. The town had only days before been the scene of a gun battle between US forces and local insurgents. As a defense against car bombs in many cities in Iraq, it had become standard practice for foot patrols to stop oncoming vehicles, particularly after dark. Five of Samar's siblings were in the car with her. All six survived, although her brother Racan was seriously wounded. US soldiers gave the children first aid before taking them to a nearby hospital.

The brief caption given, although correct, seemed to demonize the patrol for killing her parents. With the full caption I hope everyone understands why they were killed.

While I'm at it, might as well give the full captions to the others too.. If you're gonna post, please try to complete the captions if there are any.

1. Faure Gnassingbe, the son of Africa's longest-reigning dictator Gnassingbe Eyadema, was elected president of Togo in April. The military had installed Gnassingbe as president after his father's death in February, in a move described by the opposition and some other African leaders as a military coup. Under strong international pressure, Gnassingbe stepped down and called an election. Opposition members alleged the polls were rigged and organized protests. Within minutes of Gnassingbe being declared winner they rampaged through the streets of the capital Lome, burning barricades and clashing with security forces.

2. On May 7 a suicide car bomb targeting a passing civilian contractor convoy exploded, killing 22 people and wounding more than 35 in a crowded Tahrir Square in central Baghdad.

3. In August, Israel brought to an end its 38-year occupation of the Gaza Strip. Under Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon's disengagement plan, some 8,500 settlers were withdrawn from land seized during the 1967 Six-Day War.

4. Samar Hassan cries seconds after US troops shot and killed her parents in an incident in Tal Afar in northern Iraq in January. Soldiers opened fire after the car driven by Samar's father failed to stop as it approached their dusk patrol. ONE of the most dramatic of all shipwreck pictures, this exclusive photo was made by Fred Hanson of the crew of the steamship Vestris just before she rolled on her side and sank to the bottom of the Atlantic. It shows members of her crew and passengers at ropes as the last lifeboats were lowered. The man on the left, leaning against cabin, is George Bogg. Because both his arms were broken in the turmoil, he looked on helplessly and prayed until carried from the ship. Capt. William Carey, who went down with his vessel, is in the long black coat (right of group in foreground), directing the lowering of a boat. Federal probe of disaster will, be started by officials today - From The Baltimore News - November 15, 1928 - Fraser Darrah Collection

This exclusive photo shows the ill-fated Vestris desperately battling the angry seas before it succumbed to its watery grave, listing to port so badly that part of the upper deck was awash. It's special effects, just by creating a huge flame you won't injure people. There is no shockwave a real explosion would cause.

I like the Vietnam pic with the little boy, probably still too young to udnerstand that he will have to grow up without his father around.

Im going to assume that those are kneepads, and they're on his angles to keep them out of the way and to allow max. mobility/comfort.

Yeah you will find if you ever hump for long periods with lots of weight on your back, knee pads become very uncomfortable. Thats why a lot of the time we will only wear one, and it will be down the leg.

Sheesh..tough crowd. Some pics to some people maybe be more 'dramatic' than others.

I thought the days of Stalinism were out the window where we didnt have to be told whats 'dramatic' and whats not.

A.the pic where the gi is taking a shower, clearly shows you the hardships and improvisation that some had to endure while out in the bush and yes,I find it very surreal.

b.the pic of the gi with the child on the swing is showing the lighter side of the war,and that not everyone is a brutal killer, compassion is DRAMATIC.
