German to stand trial for 'Koran' toilet paper

BERLIN -- A German who printed the slogan "Koran, the holy Koran" on toilet paper and sent the product to mosques and media is to go on trial for disturbing the public peace, prosecutors said on Thursday.

The businessman, identified only as Manfred van H., had included a leaflet with the rolls of toilet paper in which he described the Koran as "a recipe book for terrorists".

In July last year, he had offered samples of the toilet paper to around 15 mosques in the cities of Duisburg, Hamburg and Dortmund and also to TV stations and news magazines.

The accused has told prosecutors in the western city of Muenster that he intended to use the proceeds from the sale of the toilet rolls to build a monument to victims of terror attacks carried out by Islamic extremists.

He said that he had intended to be provocative and defended his right to free speech.

The trial will begin on February 23 at a court in Luedinghausen near Muenster.
