Fascinating!! I'm always enthralled by old photos such as these. Who were these people? What were their thoughts? What were their dreams? Whatever happened to them? Someday soon we'll be in their positions: Smiling faces long gone, to be stared at in wonderment (or apathy) by generations to come.
PS: Re: Locations of that one set of pic: The final photo has Italian writing on the storefront...

Yeah, it definitely looks like Italy/Rome in a few shots but I was wondering what army base that might have been. Looks like it was right after the end of the war. It's a funny thing; these pictures were taken only 60-30 years ago, but it seems almost like an archaeological project trying to place the people and times of these photos.
Btw, this is prob. my favorite of the lot.

Thats the Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emmanuele II (Monument for the first king of modern Italy, that fella on the bronze horse :) ) right on top of Rome´s Capitol Hill. Commonly called the called the "Typewriter" or "Wedding Cake". The Photograph was taken standing on the Piazza Venezia. (For Google Earth: 41.8949306694, 12.4829661998)

BTW if you go around that thing on the right side, you will find this famous statue (only a copy of the original though):

And if you go even further that direction it will lead you to the even more famous "Forum Romanum"

This picture is the old Courthouse of Rome at the Piazza dei Tribunali, only a couple meters east of the famous Castel Sant´Angelo (Google Earth: 41.903413542, 12.4708691758)

BTW, there´s a nice cozy Trattoria behind it ;)

Finally, this is the Fontana di Trevi (Trevi Fountain), made famous by the film "La Dolce Vita" with Anita Ekberg taking a bath in it. (Google Earth: 41.900776,12.482979)

Thanks, now I´m absolutely itching to see that city again :fork::fork:
j/k... No really, I´ve been there several times to Rome and it never gets boring. Simply so much to see, if you want to do a cultural vacation definately go to Italy and Rome in specific. Apart from being a refreshing city it has more historical sites than some other whole COUNTRIES - and most of them are in walking distance!
PS. I want some virtual Rep now ;)
That's so cool Elroy...thanks so much for the links! I love old pictures like that.

Hey Vandervahn, here's some +++++++rep for ya' and a bundle of MP.net cash. Thanks for taking the time to ID the Rome/Italy pics. Hard to believe how old that city is, especially for those of us raised here in N. America.
Ria, I really like vintage photos too, but they always get me bummed out 'cos there's always the awareness that some day it's going to be my face looking out from some wrinkled and torn up picture.
