anyone know there max aircraft capacity? asside from reduced maintance and decreased attrition rate if lost, are there advantages to having such small carriers? are their radar cross-signatures small enough to hide them better?

cant imagine that those ships have much smaller a radar signature then a super carrier (USN-type). same basic shape, island isnt built in any particularly radar-friendly way.

They can carry 12 Sea Harriers, 4 AEW Sea King helicopters, 6 ASW Sea King helicopters.
The USN Nimitz class has a complement of around 5000 souls on board and the RN Illustrious class has roughly 1071.
Though really we shouldn't compare the two because they were designed with two different purposes in mind.
US carriers are more for applying air power from the sea and RN carriers were originally made for the purpose of anti sub warfare.

For future reference, the two classes of American amphib carriers are "Tarawa" and "Wasp." The Iwo Jima is a Wasp-class carrier. ;)
What's up with the british navy looking so damn old and decrepid?

I looked it up. Basically, the dimensions of the deck are as follows:
Invincible-Class: 196m x 34m
Wasp-Class: 256m x 32m
So they're more or less the same size though the Wasp- and Tarawa-Class ships are larger. Keep in mind though that they serve overall different purposes and that the Invincible-Class carriers have a short takeoff ramp which our amphibs lack.

Most of the photos seem to be from the mid 90's up. If you look at the bow of the ship you'll notice that the ships have undergone an extension of the forward deck ( a modification carried out in the 90s). Plus all of them seem to be sporting Phalanx and later Goalkeeper CIWS, which was done after the Falklands war.

Nice pics. Mind if I make a contribution? I've got some pics of HMS Ocean when I went to Plymouth in the summer. I've got to find them first!

I see . There is perhaps any photos of before and after , to see the difference? Also , why that was done ?

The main visual difference is the removal of the Sea Dart SAM from the front (near the ski ramp) and its two radar 'domes' from the island.

http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/rn/data/gallery/full/1053329839f.jpg
Why it was removed? Sea Dart is carried on our Type 42 destroyers, without which a carrier is unlikely to deploy, its an old, obsolescent at least, system, and the space taken up by the launcher and magazine was needed for specialist equipment to support the RAF's Harrier GR.7, which is sometimes deployed alongside the Sea Harrier FA2.
Typical air group in this case would be 8x FA2, 8xGR.7, 2xSea King HAS6/Merlin HM1(ASW) and 4 Sea King ASaC7 (AEW).
Also kutter, Goalkeeper is carried by Invincible and Illustrious, and Phalanx is carried on Ark Royal.
What's up with the british navy looking so damn old and decrepid?
a difference of 350 billion as a defence budget, and not wanting to go 400 billion dollars in debt
