Ok, my friend has this rifle:

He thought it was a mauser but it doesn't look like any mauser I've ever seen, K98 variants atleast.

This is my Yugo M24 mauser which obviously looks nothing like it.

Do any of you know what his gun can be? At first I thought it was a Japanese "Type" rifle but I don't think any of 'em had curved bolts..

Looks to me like an 1893 mauser.

This one in particular is a Spanish one but they were used by a number of countries that used them like Turkey and Chile amongst others. Sportsmans Guide is selling Turkish ones if I remember correctly.

Well, the easiest solution would be if you had a Picture of its markings. That would make everything clear.

For me it looks like a swedish Mauser variant.

Ok, well unfortunately I don't have 6.5x55 - my mauser uses 8x57 or 7.92x57 to be exact..is that what you mean when you say 7mm?
I'll tell him to get pics of the crests and such.

His rifle reads:

Fabrica De Armas 1915

So I'm guessin it's Spanish ?

I found this picture :

Looks exactly like his, but it doesn't give much info on the gun :
"MAUSER GEW98 SPANDAU 1915"

That looks similiar but it does not have any of that text on the left side of the receiver, nor a straight bolt handle

looks like a mauser to my untrained eyes.

Definitely a Spanish 1893 Mauser. Keep good care of that. They are very desirable to collectors.

The Mauser design was also used by a lot of (spanish speaking) american countries. Did some of them produce domestic versions?

Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Colombia, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Serbia, China, Persia, Transvaal and the Orange Free State all used them and most were imports. I know the Orange Free State (now a province of South Africa) were making them and exporting and seen one of their's used by the Chilean military as a slight derivative, but almost all 1893's were made in Germany.
