See if you can get your hands on the Tom Clancy non fiction book about the Marine Expeditionary Units

It is a really good read, I am not a marine but IMHO this is a really good breakdown of the Corps

Well, the Marines were originally formed for ship security/boarding/fighting and amphibious landings, but that was way back in 1775. Today there's not a great difference between the Army and Marines. The main difference is that there are basically always Marine units of about 2000+ men forward deployed in the world on ship, called Marine Expeditionary Units (MEU's), which include infantry as well as their own armor and air support.

In a way, the Marines are America's shock infantry, but the truth is that there's little difference between the Army and Marines, which has led to alot of people believing that the Marines should be disbanded and its duties handed over to the Army.

I'm sure other guys, BTDT's especially, could give a better comparison or explanation but that's my take on it.

I think they were based off of the British Royal Marines who were originally formed to board ships. But i could be wrong.

Army = occupying force

Marines = quick reaction/shock force, gives up territory for army to occupy, then withdraws and prepares for the next battle. The Marines can be ready to deploy within 6 hours if say WW3 broke out for example.

someone else can point out more facts on army :P

The Marines are a much smaller force than the Army. As others have noted, there is quite a bit of overlapping in cpaability, but there are some differences to note.

Marines are forward deployed aboard Naval vessels in Amphibeous Ready Groups, which is why they seem to get to hotspots around the world so quickly. They usually aren't more than a couple of days away.
I think the Army has rapid deployment forces (18th Airborne COrps? Help me out) that maintain ready Brigades, units that are able to mount up and fly anywhere in the world on short notice.

Marine units are much lighter than comparable Army units - a single Army INFANTRY division has more tanks than the entire USMC.

Best thing to do is check out www.usmc.mil and www.army.mil and compare what they have to say. The question really can't be reasonably answered here.

Each MEU has their own tanks, air support, heavy artillery, armor and pretty much everything. Army's light divisions (25thID, 10th Mtn, 82nd, 101st, etc.) don't have have that kind of fire power.
