View Full Version : Who's your hero?

Military or otherwise, alive or dead?

I'd have to go with Ernest Shackleton of the Imperial Trans-Arctic Expedition. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_Trans-Antarctic_Expedition)
Put simply he was born to lead men.

I for my selve love "Commander Europa" ^^ .Thats no fiction beleave me.
He is a european union superhero destined to save europe from what ever and to educate little children about the European Union and there government without a constitution. He also teaches why it is important and live saving to catalog different forms of cucumber. Of course he is a historian as well and educates children about the history of the european Union beginning with the shattering of the third Reich (in this version by Captain America I guess ^^).

And I wonder what the hell those bureaucrats in Bruessel are working an spending money on right now to disabuse the the european people.

I think that Guy Gibson should be up with the greats, Guy Gibson was a bomber pilot with the RAf during WW2. Now six out of every 10 crews in Bomber Command would die during their first tour of 30 missions. Gibson died during his seventh tour of duty. Gibson had also wonn the VC for his exploits on the Dam Buster raids

That's wrong, the best way to deal with a troll problem of this type is to shoot them. After long discussion on a Norwegian hunting and shooting forum, experts there came to the conclusion that the necessary caliber should be .50BMG (that's my opinion), though some believe that internet trolls only require .22 short, .32 or .380 possibly, above that would be just overkill. Personally i say .50 just for the hell of it.

Anders Lassen
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anders_Frederik_Emil_Victor_Schau_Lassen

Today there is an Anders Lassen foundation that has the following purpose:
To reward distingusihed millitary service.
To give financial support to members or former members of Danish Special Forces units for special contribution or to those persons relatives.
To support wound or injured Danish military presonell.
To consider support to persons involved in humitarian work.

Regarding what makes a hero.. In my world standing up what you believe in is enough!

Maybe "hero" isn't the best word. But I always admired Brigade General Mikołaj Bołtuć. He was author of the shortest and in my opinion the best (much moving) critique about "achivements" of some polish commanders in 1939 September Campaing.

He said " If I die, let everybody know, that me and the Army died because of this m.....ker". He died few days later, leading rest of his man to desperate attack on their way to encircled Warsaw.

I'm not real big on labeling military commanders as hero's, it's usually the mass media or newspapers that make hero's out of these men. (the thought of labeling Patton as a hero makes my stomach turn)
I think that the hero's in warfare are the one's who don't get to come home; it's that simple.
My personal favorites throughout contemporary history are probably Ghandi, Martin Luther King Jr., Joan of Arc, Marcus Hamilton Houston, Booker T. Washington.
I also refuse to put any President on a pedastool, calling them a hero, because running a country is big business, and Presidents are glorified businessmen.
I've also seen a poster put up a picture of FDR, I'm gonna go ahead and assume that you didn't know that FDR successfully veto'd anti-lynching legislation and didn't do a damn thing for black Americans. His wife, Eleanor, did far more than he ever considered doing. FDR's new deal was a step in the right direction of ending the depression, but it only cme to end when the United States entered WWII. I can't consider a man a hero for that.
Not to get all sappy, but the hero's in everyday life are your school teachers, firemen, policemen, or any coomon man who takes a stand against any form of injustice that he sees.
Tom Joad.

My father, ex RN and MN who passed away 15 years ago.He would have been 81 on the 28th of July.Worked hard all his life providing all that he could for my mother and I,died just two months shy of retiring.A quiet, unasuming man who detested showoffs.Born in the 'colonies' to English parents he was 'British to his Backbone' and proud of it. Did alot of things and travelled the World in his younger days, alot of which I didn't know about 'til after he died.In a very short list of heroes he'll always be at the top.
The other heroes would be Polar explorers Scott and Shackleton. As a young boy they were the first 'heroes' that I was ever exposed to(from my Father). For all their strengths (and failings) I've been a strong admirer of both ever since.

I don't believe in this hero stuff. A lot of people are capable of extraordinary things in certain situations, but every person also has his own flaws. There are some people who I respect for something they have done but I look up to or idolize no one as there is no such thing as a perfect human being.

Dear Member,

There was something I remember that General Pershing the commander of American forces in France during WW1 stated about Sgt York (he was a crack shot and killed a large number of Germans and cause over a hundred to surrender) who was awarded the US Medal of Honor. He stated that yes he respected Sgt York. But he believed that Sgt York was one of those men who does not feel fear or is not effected by fear. Basically osme people are naturally brave and Sgt York was doing what came natural to him. The soldier Pershing said he respected was the one in the trench who is scared totally out of his wits, has messed (ie sh*t) his pants and then when the whistle is blown, still goes over the top of the trench and attacks the Germans.

For historical figures, there are others, but these are the five that first came to mind:
Cyrus the Great
Jesus Christ
Saladin
Martin Luther King
Pope John Paul II

In a broader sense:
My parents
The members of our armed service giving their time, sweat, blood, and, even lives for us.

My father.

32 year Army man who saw combat in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Taught me its future generation's RESPONSIBILITY to continue to pay for what his generation paid for me... And the right thing is right regardless of how unpopular it may be.

I'd like to preface my entry with two remarks, neither of which is intended as a "shot" against the many excellent posts:
(1): There are many historical figures I admire and respect (**** Winters, Abraham Lincoln ect); my "heroes" are people I've actually met and gotten to know, and
(2): Heroes don't have to be perfect, nor do they have to live like heroes for thier entire lives to qualify as such. Like geniuses, a hero only ahs to be a hero once to qualify. Once when it counted.

That said, my hero is Major-General Lewis MacKenzie. Best boss, best leader, I have ever known. Everyone since falls short. He stood up every time, even when everyone else sat down.

My dad. He is the biggest inspiration/example to me of what men should be like: hard working, selfless, duty-bound, self reliant and honorable. He and my mom raised 4 kids on a blue-collar salary and saw that we never did without, though he often did. A great coach/teacher, a hard task master that expected more from himself than anyone else, but he always made time for a joke or a ball game or a ping-pong match.

Respect for your dad. :)

I have a deep sense of honor towards every single soldier, living or dead, who has fought for their life in a hostile environment for someone else's sake. I wish I could share their pain.

My Grandfather,

Someone who I consider to be an etalon for a man. Honorable man who never betrayed his principals, put his family first, smart, strong and always had a joke to cheer you up, influenced and helped hundreds of people.

Participated in WW2, in the capacity of Intelligence/Reconnaissance Officer, numerous missions deep behind enemy lines, helped in organizing partisan movement in Belarus. Started in 1942 as a Junior Lieutenant, by the end of the war in 1945 was a Lt-Colonel.

Proud to be named after you!

I have a friend who died a year and a half ago, fell through thin ice. The divers who went in to recover his body in sub zero temps at 3 in the morning are my hero's. In fact I'm in a class with one of them one of the greatest persons that I've ever met.
