India Buys What Russia Cannot Afford

February 14, 2006: India has ordered three more Talwar class frigates from Russia, at a cost of $500 million each. These are export versions of the Russian Krivak III class ships, which the Russian navy cannot afford to buy for itself. The first three Talwars entered service in 2003-4. There were some teething problems with these ships, the first of a new class. But the Indians were finally satisfied, when Russia made good all deficiencies. The three new ships, to be delivered by 2011, are actually destroyers, but that name has fallen out of favor. So now ships like these 4,000 ton warships, are usually called frigates. Larger ones are called cruisers. The Talwar's are 386 feet long, carry 24 anti-aircraft and eight anti-ship missiles, four torpedo tubes, as well as a 100mm gun, close in anti-missile guns, a helicopter, anti-submarine weapons (depth charges and missiles). The ship has a very complete set of electronics gear. There is a crew of 180.

interesting..and the russians seem to classify it as a stealth frigate.....seems like india is getting a lot of stuff from the russians and then upgrading it with the western tech. Wouldnt blame them for the build up...they need the equipment with the kind of neighborhood they live in.

Vessel Type: Guided Missile Frigate, Type 1135.6
Names & Pennant Numbers with commission dates:
INS Talwar (http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/NAVY/Images/Talwar-Crest.jpg) F40; Laid Down - 10 March 1999, Launched - 12 May 2000, Commissioned - 18 June 2003.
INS Trishul (http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/NAVY/Images/Trishul-Crest.jpg) F43; Laid Down - 24 Sept 1999, Launched - 24 Nov 2000, Commissioned - 25 June 2003.
INS Tabar (http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/NAVY/Images/Tabar-Crest.jpg) F44; Laid Down - 26 May 2000, Launched - 25 May 2001, Commissioned - 19 April 2004.
Structure: The Severnoye (Northern) Design Bureau developed the Project 1135.6 vessel using an earlier Project 1135.1 design, which dated back to the early 1980s. The extensive scope of redesign and re-engineering for these vessels has realised a multipurpose surface combatant of about 4,000 ton displacement (this increase being attributed to additional weapon systems and the replacement of light alloys with steel), tailored to meet the Indian Navy's specific mission and performance requirements.
The ship's redesigned topside & hull has considerably reduced radar cross-section and this feature alone, clearly separates the Project 1135.6 from its predecessors. While the superstructure sides are sloped and relatively clean, the very cluttered topside of the ship cannot be remotely described as having any signature reducing features. However, these frigates will be the first Indian Navy warships to incorporate some stealth features and a vertical launch missile system. The ship's hull is characterised by outward flare and tumblehome, while the superstructure (which forms a continuous junction with the hull) has a large fixed tumblehome angle.

Why would the name destroyer have fallen out of favor, as the article described? I kinda like the word. The only name better for a class of vessel would be pestilence!!! I guess i just like the sound of it.

Visby is a Corvette, has not the sea endurance of a Frigate, cant carry larger Helicopters and is for sure not cleared for Export to India.

Funny they dont call such ships destroyer any more, same thing here in Germany with the new Frigates. That was probably because the Red-Green goverment didnt like the agressive Word "Destroyer".
