A great commitment for a country with a population of 1.4 million. Respect to the Estonians.

I don't think they donated guns... maybe they did. I do know that Sweden donated AK 4's to one of the Baltic states. I can't remember if it was Estonia or Latvia.

I don't think they donated guns... maybe they did.

If you mean artillery with guns then yes. But none of the equipment in these photos is Finnish. The Finnish help to Estonia has mainly been helping them get an own effective organization, and well since they are in NATO now I guess it worked just fine.

Finland helped Estonian defence forces get started

By Jukka Rislakki

The Finnish Defence Staff started its Estonia project in 1996, providing advice, training, and armaments to the defence forces of its southern neighbour.
The Finns emphasise that everything is happening according to Estonia’s desires, and there has been no pressure.
The project is financed by funding from the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for aid to adjacent areas. Estonia’s Border Guard is also largely a Finnish creation.
In the summer, the Finnish Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs decided to change the Estonia programme into a more extensive project for all three Baltic countries as of the beginning of next year. The programme is to conclude in 2004.

No country has trained as many officers of independent Estonia as Finland has. Nearly 200 Estonians have undergone officer training in Finland.
Currently more than 30 Estonians are taking part in such courses. In addition, six high-ranking officers are to take part in a staff officer training course.
Finland has also sold 19 pieces of field artillery with ammunition to Estonia at a nominal price, and Estonians have taken part in two artillery exercises in Finland.

Estonia has had more than 20 retired Finnish officers serving as advisers to its armed forces.
Finnish Colonel Lauri Väätänen, who previously served as adviser to Estonia’s Home Guard Forces, has worked to develop Estonia’s officer training system since 1996. He does not wear the uniform of any country.
Väätänen is currently the adviser of the head of Estonia’s military school in Tarto. He was also asked to serve as the director of the school. The same building also contains the new defence college of all the Baltic states.
Defence Minister Jüri Luik says that he is very grateful to the Finnish experts for their advice, aid, and training. He says that the Finnish defence models are very similar to those in Finland, and that Estonia can learn much from Finland and can use Finnish ideas.
Sweden, meanwhile, has indicated that it wants to push its "defence zone" eastward, and has donated a large amount of arms to Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania in mid-October.

Guns as in small arms. I was thinking that perhaps Finland donated some of its AKs that they have lying around in storage.

Estonia has a small amount of Norinco Type 56-II's. Finland bought 100 000 of these in the 1990s from China "almost for free" as the then defence minister Elisabeth Rhen put it (and thus killing the Finnish Sako RK 95 production). The Finnish defence forces has shrunk from 500 000 to 350 000 since then so it is possible that some of those have been given or sold to Estonia. Perhaps... but in any case the Estonians just store them for world war three as Finland and doesn't use them during peace time too much.

didnt know Iraqis still had BMPs

Sure they do. They salvaged and rebuilt some from junkyards, and the Hellenic Army donated more. AFAIK all 500 of our BMP-1A1 Ost IFVs will end up in Iraq. Easy to spot them: The gunner's hatch opens to the side (we had them fitted with a pintle-mounted M2HB, removed from those going to Iraq),
All lights and rear view mirrors are german (Marder-type), anti-slip pads are fitted to the hull top, boarding ladder on the left side towards the rear, german night driving cross on the rear left door, and rubber track pads.

Finland donated their national anthem aswell.

No, it is not correct. Composer Fredrik Pacius was a poor man. He created one anthem and sold it to three nations: Finns, Estonians and Livonians. However, words of those anthems are different.

Hukatus,

How were soldiers for Iraq duty selected? Where they from one infantry unit or did they just pulled bunch of guy together, trained them up and send them out? Are they all volunteers, professionals or conscripts?

Slinky
09-01-2006, 09:30 AM
they are professional soldiers from Scoutsbattalion. Men from Scoutsbattalion are also serving in other parts of the world in NATO operations
The command selects a squad who will go to the mission and all you have to do to get on a mission is to serve in that squad. After that they train about 6 months before the mission, to learn everything they must know about the mission area and to work the team togheter

Hukatus,

Great images... I am fascinated with the use of Galils. What do the troops think of the weapon?

I find it interesting that the Israelis seemed to have abandon their use in favor of the M16/M4 family.

At the risk of hijacking this thread do you or anyone else know why the Israelis make this decision? Further is the Estonian Army considering a move to another platform (e.g., M16 or G36)?

Thanks for serving...

I have no information Estonia will move to another platform; we already have enough assault rifles:
http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/showthread.php?t=63299&highlight=small+arms+inventory
Instead of buying new weapons our logistics are buying optical and electronical devices to upgrade Galil, AK-4 and KSP-58.

Reputation of Galil is usually high. I actually wined at my conscription period that ammo is weak and quality bad (magazines were made by soft material ant this caused loading problems), but now I have used AK-47 (made in Romania and China), AK-4 (G3 made in Sweden) and M-14 (made in USA). Compared with those assault rifles I have to admit that Galil is light, accurate and comfortable enough. Only TAAS Industries should produce better magazines ;-)

What? Why would you import PRC Type-56 and Romanian Model-1963 rifles? I thought Estonia was trying to move to NATO caliber weapons? Someone posted a thread that showed a bunch of PM Makarov's and TT-33's being cut-up into pieces! (not to mention, M-1911A1's too!)

Well, it is short answer and long answer.

Short one: anybody did not sell us anything!
Long one. At the beginning of 1990-ties was possible that Baltic will be next Balkan. Because of the risk weapons were not allowed to sell to Baltic countries. Instead of boycott Estonia bought some assault rifles, machine guns and grenade launchers originated from Romania and China. But it was just a temporary solution. Besides, those few weapons were meant for training conscripts, reserve for mobilization did not exist. At the middle of 1990-ties Estonia made attempt to buy enough quantity modern western weapons but only Israel and South Africa were agree to sell. Because of political reasons (apartheid in South Africa on those days) Israel won this competition. After this deal army got new western weapons and Kaitseliit (National Guard) got the old eastern one. At the end of 1990-ties USA gave us tons of M-14; it was a signal to other countries to send us their old equipment made for WW III. Nowadays troops in capital city and professional Scoutspataljon have Galils and the others have AK-4 (G3 made in Sweden). Nobody uses anymore old eastern weapons.

Hi

Galils. But: "The latter design, based on the Finnish Valmet RK-62 assault rifle (a license-built AK-47 clone), eventually won the competition and was selected as a new IDF assault rifle in the 1973, but its actual adoption was delayed by the next Israel-Arab Yom Kippur war of the 1973. The machinery and documentation package was bought from Valmet and transferret to the state owned Israel Military Indrusties (IMI) company. There are some rumors that the first production Galil rifles were built on Valmet-made receivers."
So, it isnt miracle that they can look same.
