That's the problem with selling the chinese weapons; you sell 12 gazelle and before you know it they've been dismantled and copied in 500 copies under a local name and without paying any licence fees...

Any pictures of the old Super Frelon SA321 ?

China operates relatively few helicopters compared to the United States and Russia, with no more than 700 machines flying in military and civil services. Most of these helicopters are manufactured abroad, with the rest built locally under license. China owns two helicopter manufacture complexes and a dedicated helicopter technique institute, but can only produce around 40 helicopters every year.

The biggest user of the helicopters in China is the People’s Liberation Army (PLA)’s Army Aviation Corps, which was established in 1988 by the transfer of utility helicopters from Air Force control to the Army. The Corps’ role is to support ground troops as a transport force, with the majority of its helicopter fleets being transport and utility machines.

The Army Aviation Corps’ limited combat capability is provided by several dozens of Harbin WZ-9 attack helicopters and eight Eurocopter SA 342L Gazelles. In addition, around 100 Mil Mi-17 Hips can carry unguided rocket launchers and machinegun pods for ground attack roles. The lack of helicopter fire support is fuelling China’s attack helicopter requirements.

The remaining Z-9s, 24 Sikorsky S-70C Black Hawks, and 60-plus Mil Mi-17 Hips, and 3 Mil Mi-6 constitute the transport force. There are six Eurocopter AS 332 Super Pumas and a dozen of Mil Mi-8 Hips inherited from the Air Force for VIP passenger transportation and casualty evacuation missions. In addition, some 30 to 40 SA 316 Alouettes III and Changhe Z-11s for training and communications roles. In time of crisis, this helicopter fleet can be enforced by a number of Bell 212/214s, Boeing CH-47 Chinooks and Sikorsky S-76s from civil services.

The PLA Navy also operates a small number of helicopters for Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) and search and rescue (SAR) missions. This includes some 6~10 Kamov Ka-28 Helixes, 13 AS 321Ja Super Frelons, some 10-plus Z-8s (Chinese copy of Super Frelon), 20 AS 565 Panthers, and a small number of naval variant Z-9s.

Meanwhile the Chinese helicopter industry is planning a medium-weight helicopter programme under the helps of European aviation companies, in a hope to fulfil the boosting requirements from both military and civil sectors in the next two decades.

The H425 multi-purpose helicopter, with a maximum payload of 4,250 kg and a range of 800 km, was designed by Harbin Aircraft Industry Co. Group based in the provincial capital Harbin.

The helicopter incorporated state-of-the-art technologies and met international standards in terms of stability, airworthiness and cost- effectiveness, said Cui Xuewen, president of the group.

"The H425 is equipped with advanced engines, gearing devices and anti- crash systems that give early warning of system failures," said Cui. "It marks a new stage for China's helicopter industry."

He foresaw great potential for the helicopter in the domestic and international markets. "Several Chinese users have expressed interest in buying the H425, and we expect an annual exports of 20 to 40 to Africa and other Asian countries and regions."
