RIAA now says ripping is illegal
Opinion Backpedalling to remove rights

IT'S TIME TO BACKPEDAL for the DRM infecting music industry, but this time, it is on record in black and white.
Luckily, its hypocrisy is as boundless as its greed. Remember when the RIAA (Record Industry Association of America) was arguing in front of the US Supreme Court in the Grokster case, and it said that ripping a CD that you lawfully own to your MP3 player was "perfectly lawful"? Well, now it isn't.
The RIAA is now arguing that it is illegal, and wants to get it legally shut down. No, really, something as trivial as sworn statements to the Supreme Court should be simply taken in jest, right? Well, no, I don't think they are that dumb, but history was never the music industry's strong suit, it is in the box on the shelf, covered with dust, right next to a tiny thing called "conscience". Either way, rights like fair use seems to be a concept totally lost to it. Anyway, the EFF has a good writeup on the subject on its pages (http://www.eff.org/), hopefully the RIAA will go away before it realise that you have two kidneys, and neither are making them the money they feel that they need. Remember, you were warned about the whole organ thing before it was a crime to possess them.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
My opinion? F&%k the RIAA and the MPAA. There is nothing they can do. Since 2001, music and video piracy has done up, not down. Their lawsuits aren't doing jack. Sure iTunes is great if you would be able to actually play that music on any player. DRMing means that I do not actually own that music. Which means that I am not interested.
And the torrenting empire marches on...

No, screw you guys! The RIAA does a great job protecting the rights and outlandish salaries of worthless individuals who glamorize a life of crime, drug use, abuse of women and disprespect for the police.
The RIAA should continue doing its fantastic job of blaming people who download music for the $15 price tag of a new album that cost pennies to manufacture. If your overheads are that much, you need a new business strategy - how about paying real musicians instead of beautiful people who can't play an instrument?

Cheers, Name Taken. In regards to your finishing quote, I respond:
"The revolution will not be catered."
Oh, and it will come. One day. In a few years or maybe even less.

I approve of your rant.
So sad that most of the money for the CDs doesn't even go to the artist but to the record companies. And when artist want to put their albums on the internet for free, they get sued by record companies since they would lose their profit. Fvcking scum.

The RIAA is saying that the people who work for the artist industry are hurt by downloading.
Until I see a famous celebrity driving a broken down 1994 Geo Metro, then I'll start to believe them.

Well here in Greece music companies (Minos-EMI, Planetworks, Sony)... look what requested:
1) Every restaurant that plays music from CDs must pay copyright commisions to the music companies (!!!!!!!!!)
2) Every radio station that airs whatever song, either Greek or foreign one, must also pay copyright comission to the music Companies (!!!!)
Later, they will request that, whoever pays loudly a song in his car, must also pay comissions!!!!!!!!!!

x2.
This has been upheld in court before.
There was a game company suing people that made copies of their CD's even if it was backup copies of a legally purchased game... The court ruled that if you buy the product, it is legal to make a back up copy for personal use.
If you think the music industry is getting bad, look at some of the copy right crap going on in the gamming world... primarily a product called StarForce....which is being used on a huge number of games released by Ubisoft... The software, once installed, is supposed to keep you from making copies of the CD...in the process it has been responsible for killing many a CDRW drive... it essentially shuts off the drivers for your CDRW drive. Initially there was no statement indicating the prescense of the software, but a legal battle now requires that the box indicate the use of StarForce. Now the company, starForce is based in Russia. They refuse to acknowledge any problems with the software. For a while they refused to even provide a removal tool... even after you uninstalled the game the program remained on your computer. Anyone that contacts their tech support for help removing what is essentially mal-ware, is usually ridiculed in half-russian-half-english and called a hacker or pirate. Now heres the thing- People pirating the games are using no-CD cracks, so it doesnt even affect them, the only people it affects is people who bought the software legally.
Anyway, all things considered, copyright protection is important, but not so important that it should become a nuisance, or disrupt my right to make a back-up copy for my own personal use, or in the case of starForce, cause damage to my computer, intentionally.
That being said, i dont see this going anywhere. If the recording industry pursues making it illegal to a Rip a CD and implements something to prevent CD's from being ripped, were going to see a huge decrease in MP3 player sales, and more profit for Ipod. Its essentially gonna drive a wedge between the recording industry and a number of companies they rely on, namely Sony, to bring the music to the listeners.

I still find it funny that none of the money that the RIAA sued your average Joe-blow downloader for has gone to the "poor, affected" artists that the RIAA claims to be supporting by filing lawsuits.
its pointless to do so its just a bunch of stupid *ucks trying to make theirselves rich for nothing. i say we sue the riaa for misuse of funds....good point on the poor starving musicians and such...where are they now. this was another pointless lawsuit brought on by stupid ass metallica

I can completely understand a artist right to protect there "intellectual property". The boot legging & reselling of artist property while cutting them out of the loop is completely wrong. But as far as the R.I.A.A. go's, they may SEE DEEZ................................

Now see if we lived in a socialist world there would be no RIAA. Music artists would be doing for art not money. There would be no middle men ect ect. All leeches that don't contribute to society.
Haha
Seriously. The global recording companies can not blame anyone but themselves. Take the music I listen to for example. It's extremely hard to get in Australia. And I'm a person that refuses to purchase online.
I cant get the music in a music shop.
what do I do?
