I figure I always drop the opinions of my last "read" on here, seeing as some of us have mutual interests. I give this book a very well deserved two thumbs up, five of five stars.
This book really feels like a trip into time, I found this book at www.pen-and-sword.co.uk (http://www.pen-and-sword.co.uk) shortly after purchasing "Sniper on the Eastern Front" ( see other thread in this section about it ). Seeing that it was an account of Islandwana survivor from the Royal Artillery. I had to order it, and although its only 176pages, I was very satisfied and happy with my purchase, it reads very smoothly Adrean Greaves has written a number of books on the zulu war all can be found ethier on Amazon.com or Pen and Swords website.
There is a narrative written that fills in the blanks between the letters, being both informative and critical of some of Henry Curlings views on the subjects he would write about. This book is a little slow to start, as there is allot of letters from befor the battle, that describe camp life and the routine of campiegning against the Kafires, befor going to Zululand. One will also have to take into account that this was written by a man in the 19th century so he constantly refers to the africans as the "N" word, which there is no malicious use, it is still not for those sensitive to the issue. It just has to be taken into context as to when it was written, his letters are very vivid when it comes to his escape from Isandwana, and you get a personal picture of the horror that he faced, he was one of only a very handfull on the front lines to escape the destruction of 1st company 24th foot and other troops encamped at the mountain that fatefull day, he describes his dash through fugitives drift and watching melville ( I think cant remember exactly ) fall with the regimental colours through his own eyes.
There is allot in this book for such a short but worth while read, defenitly check this out.
