"KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - Some of the Chinook heavy-lift helicopters buzzing around the main coalition base in southern Afghanistan should look vaguely familiar to the Canadian soldiers deployed here: that's because the Dutch air force choppers used to belong to Canada. The Chinooks were sold to the Netherlands in the 1990s as part of a defence cost-cutting measure and now the more than 2,000 soldiers in the Canadian battle group have to make do without... "

I can empathize with the Canadian troops, our country has also gone through administrations which reduced our military capabilities.

the requirement is up from 6 to 9 new chinooks because 2 of them crashed in Afghanistan, it was 13 (total) to move a single airmanouvre brigade and it's vehicles but that was before they started using the MB's which are obviously bigger and heavier then the Lohr LSV's (which will also be getting an upgrade) so we need 20 Chinooks.

5 of them (immedeate requirement) will get special forces kits including forward looking infra red nightsight equipment, a hoist (is that the correct term in Englesh? it's like a rope for the commando's to exit the aircraft without landing or parachuting), extra weaponry and an expansion of the existing selfdefence equipment

if new aircraft will be bought (instead of buying them second hand from somebody) they will be CH47F standard and the existing fleet will be upgraded to that standard from CH47D

exiting :)
