(CNN) -- Eleven people were killed and an Italian consulate was burned in Libya on Friday night during protests to denounce the publication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed, sources in Libya said.

There also was a "high number" of injuries, said an official with the Italian Embassy in Tripoli.

In the port city of Benghazi in northeast Libya, protesters set the Italian Consulate on fire, but it was safely evacuated and no employees were injured, said Francesco Trupiano, Italy's ambassador to Libya. (Watch how authorities reacted when the protests turned violent -- 1:27)

"It was peaceful, then it became violent," Trupiano said of the protests in Libya's second-largest city. He said he doubts the consulate will close.

Trupiano speculated that the consulate was targeted because it is the only Western consulate in the city. However, many of the protesters said they were angry because Italian Reforms Minister Roberto Calderoli recently flaunted a T-shirt displaying one of the controversial cartoons on state TV this week. Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has asked Calderoli to resign.

Another demonstration was held in Sebha, where demonstrators gathered after Friday prayers and issued a statement urging respect for religious shrines and beliefs.

The state-run Libyan news agency, Jamahiriya, or Jana, reported on its Web site that the casualties occurred when protesters clashed with police. The public prosecutor has been asked to investigate the way police dealt with the demonstrators, the news agency said.

Do you think that someone at the Mosque told them to do this? Nah....

Berlusconi is doing it only for he is heavily into elections final rush, so he kept a balanced position.
There is nothing nazi or fascist about Calderoli and the Lega. Weasel, living where you are you should know better than calling names in such a foolish way.

Berlusconi is doing the right thing, there is a big difference between a newspaper (denmark) and a minister of a governement.

You are defending a politician who obviously provoked another religion and who obviously wants to cause trouble?

Hmmm, problems seem to be building up for Gaddafi. He has been working closely with the Italians in order to clear illegal immigration problem in Southern Italy, so I donīt think he was behind this (11 dead:roll:).

It is interesting to see Gaddafiīs response, he have many times spoken in the name of Islam (when it suited him) but now when islam becomes a potential enemy to his power, Iīm safe to say his religious feelings+koran are thrown out of the window.

No. I agree with his forced resignation. I refuse to think he has responsibility of the violent consequences. But I am all about keeping the tones down. I believe this is the difference beteween us and them. We "react" differently. Don't you?

yes, it is worth noticing that most of these protests has happened after friday prayers at the mosque. What power these imans have over these people.

Now I disagree that the minister is to blame for people dying. Can't blame other peoples irrational behaviour on an act like this. These people need to take anger management lessons ASAP. Deal with your frustration in a reasonable way. Is it all feelings with these people? Use your freakin brains for a change.ffs.

Agreed.
As for their anger management, I feel it's a way more complicated than this. It's in the culture. It will take decades to change and only once a democratical process coming from within has started taking place. If ever.

FYI, Calderoli has resigned later today. And Fini has paid a visit to the local (Roman) Mosque to pay respect to the Muslim community.

Berlusconi has then called Gheddafi on the phone sayin this can't (and won't) change the friendly relationship the two countries have been sharing up to now.
