Link, in Norwegian: here (http://www.vg.no/pub/vgart.hbs?artid=136851)
Norway and the two oil companies Statoil and Hydro are being sued for "illegaly" cooperating with OPEC to keep the oil prices at a unnatural high level.
Gary M. Osen of the firm Osen & Associates who represents the 3 private citizens who have put forward the lawsuit says "Norway and other non-OPEC nations have an illegal co-operations with OPEC to limit oil production and therefore drive the prices up"
The case is based on those who are suing meaning that Norway and Norwegian oil companys are responcible for the high gas prices in the US (buggers should come here and have a look at our, and then talk about high prices :bash: maybe i can sue the government for this?) The suit has been taken in a district court in Florida. Also Oman, Angola and Mexico are being sued.

what kind of idiots are these guys, maybe the prices are so high because YOU'RE sodding waging a war on some of the largest oil fields in the world. p-) I say we just boycot oil export to the us for a month, then start up again with double prices.

#1 Send in Hans Blix to look for Norwegian WMDs.
#2 Invade Norway to locate the WMDs Hans Blix can't find.
#3 When the WMDs are nowhere to be found, claim you're there to free the oppressed people of Norway.

We're not, we're just having fun with it. But you know, if you let two red neck idiots piss of the second largest oil exporter in the world, then that might have reprecutions. And if i was in charge, we'd be turning of the tap about now. See how fun it is when they suddenly have to pay alot more for their gas.
Or add a "stupidity tax" and double the price just for these guys :D

The Norwegian oil companies produce oil and gas at full steam; I honestly don’t think they can produce more right now.
What could slow their production, is the fact that after a major near disaster on an oil-installation some months ago, a design fault was found in a system that prevent leak and blow-out of gas.
They may have to shut down several oil-platforms for some time to change these faulty systems.
What could increase the oil and gas production some years ahead, would be if the government allowed the oil companies to start drilling in the coastal areas off Northern Norway.
These areas have vast amounts of oil and gas, but the environment is also very sensitive to major oil-leaks.
The fact that the SV-party (minor part of government) don’t want to develop these major and very promising oilfields for environmental reasons, is the main reason why we cannot increase the production.
If we could make a deal with Russia on where our common border should be, new oilfields could also be opened in the border area.
Neither we or the Russians can start drilling in these areas before a final border is agreed on.

Oil can be sold anywhere, besides, we could just dip into our 100s of billions of dollar oil funds for a month :) financial independence is a beautifull thing.

Some info about norway. (from CIA factbook so it might be wrong :) )
gov expenditures: $131.3 billion, including capital expenditures of NA (2005 est.)
Debt - external:$281 billion (Norway is a net external creditor) (30 June 2005)
so norway can run its overment for a bit more than 2 years without ANY taxes before they have to take loans.
Sit on that and rotate :)

Actually he is a great guy, and of course he can not find WMD's that only exist in the wet fantasy of some people in the Bush administration. I listened to a lecture with him once at my old university and Blix is one intelligent SOB, that's for sure. A man like him has the qualities to be a general secretary in UN, too bad that he is too old already.

And, as i said, we can dip into the oil fund after the two years, so we can go for a while without any income woot
And to rub it in, norways oil fund is as large, or larger, than Swedens national debt. So we could just buy sweden if we wanted to:grin:

Norway’s biggest problem as a nation is that we are doing too well financially at the moment.
I’ll explain my view:
It is similar to what happened to Spain when they discovered South-America in 1492. Suddenly galleons overloaded with treasures and gold flooded the nation and the decline began.
From being a nation who competed with the best and where at the forefront of technology and science they thought that the gold would do the job for them……
We think the oil will do the job for us – we are so wrong, so wrong……..
What will the Saudi`s do when they run out of oil?

Especially since the fishing industry has damn near died out. (think how many small communitys that were built on and around fishing and the factorys to produce it on land that have died.)
Once the sodding oil runs out, we'll be a 3rd world country over night. Especially if we let Russia keep walking over us on stuff like the Electron incident and the ensuing boycott of Norwegian fish.
Use the oil fund while we have it, build a large and working railway system and CONSIDERABLY better roads all over the country, lower gas and car prices so the 20+ year old death traps on Norwegian roads are destroyed once and for all. Those are the FIRST things that should be done to save us.
Another thing is to stop running minute sized farms that just get money, and barely give anything back (perhaps a few milk cartons a week, but that's not enough). Comercial farming is not possible in Norway, not in the small farms atleast.
But this was about the lawsuit, not Norways inept politicans and stupid politics p-)

Yeah I remember that. What reason was given as to why Norway didn't board the ship? Was there a big national discussion about it afterwards or something?

weather was a problem, and to escalate it to far was something they didn't want to do.
But there was talk about sending special forces to board it, but in the worst case, that could have meant a shooting war with the Russian navy.

We build our ships in Poland and Romania because our wages are too high to compete. Only the last 15-20% of the outfitting of the ship is done locally in Norway.
Reason: Our wages are too high, 1 Norwegian worker costs as much as 8-10 Romanian’s.
We don’t have a Merchant fleet manned by Norwegians. I’m one of the fewer and fewer merchant navy sailors in Norway.
Reason: Replaced by Russian and Asians because of costs.
The young kids growing up today don’t want to study mathematics and physics, and no one wants to teach mathematics and physics in school because it is so boring and difficult..
Kids want to be travelguides in Greece (I bet you have meet the blondes down there Greek Soldier?) :-), real estate brokers (quick money) or just collect social welfare money.
The industry is searching everywhere for engineers and scientists but we don’t have them…….
I can retire and take my pension in exactly 30 years from now, and I work in the oil-industry.
I just hope the oil-adventure lasts that long……….. :-)

No oil but gas is ok?
Man all this oil.. you need to view it as a bonus not as the foundation of the norwegian economy, diversify into more sectors so the nation is less vulnerable to economical, enviromental, production or boycott factors. A look at Switzerland perhaps who's also not a EU nation but a very large exporter of goods. Imagine doing what they can, AND have the oil. woot
I'm gonna go stats on ya now.
I haven't looked at the Norwegian numbers for 2005 but in 2004 the major non-oil sectors were in decline while Swiss, Finnish and Swedish sectors were all in substantional growth. (For Sweden, our natural reserves wood and mineral exports is about 45% in value of norway's oil exports but only 19% of our total exports (telecom 15%, vehicles 15% etc) ..but in 2004 oil products stood for 44% of norwegian exports. So why mention Sweden? Because there was a time when our sectors looked similar, when our natural reserve exports were ~50% so as soon as foreign speculators hit our currency, trade tariffs, dollar value or other competition the entire nation had to deal with the blow. Now if they attack f.i the steel industry we can deal with it, cause that share is so small.
anyway I'm sure you know all this... just saying it would be wise to direct attention to other sectors and see oil as a bonus, it will give you less headache... p-)

The main problem is that the politicians are treating the oil and oil fund like their personal piggy bank, and they're holding on to it TIGHT.
Only way to change this would be to get fresh blood into it, wich wont happen for years later, possibly even when it's to late.
It's like me and a mate say, line all the politicians against a wall and shoot them. All new politicians get a screening of a tape from that incident to discourage stupidity.
Norway is decending into a 3rd world nation allready, we have got a road network in CRAPPY conditions, we've got the oldest average on cars (wich means less safety, more gas usage and more polution) and we've got taxes that are just evil.
We have oil, we're one of the richest nations in the world, and that coupled with NO external debt makes us THE richest nation in the world. Yet not only does Sweden, a nation with an external debt as large as the Norwegian oil fund, have car prices at half to a third of the norwegian ones, they have a far better road network and a considerably better standard on roads.
And that's just one point, we could write a damned book on the stupidity and pure bollocks that is Norway in it's current state.
Shyte, i have to get into politics p-) Guess we'd be invaded by the US about a week after i started putting my views into work. (That would be about 2 days after we invaded Sweden to take back Jamtland, and started shooting at Russian fishing boats that did a Electron stunt.)
