Just stay away from British women......just kidding

The pubs in the inner city will probably be over priced anyway, and probably won't be proper pubs either.
However I'd head to Greenwich, it's a nice area and there should be some good places to drink around there.
You may be surprised to see a lot of Carlsberg too
Oh and stay away from Essex girls :D

I thought of that. But really, how could that be true....
Didn't FG tell you there weren't any good pubs in Orlando?
I was thinking the same about pubs
talk about a dilema....
I'd rather wipe my arse with sandpaper than go drinking in London.
But that's just me.

Aaanyway, but just to hijack this thread for a while, if I ever get the money to go back to NY, are there anyone on the board that live in the area, and could show me and my friend the town?
Oh, and they would need to NOT be homocidal madmen. :)

I was just there a couple of months ago....and loved it.
A couple of things you may wish to consider:
Consider a rail pass for the duration of your stay in London......the Underground/Subway is truly worldclass...even if some of the Poms I met do bitch about it...it's about the best one I've ever used...but make sure you get advice or THINK about what pass you may wish to purchase(you can buy passes by area...if you're sticking to one geographic area).
Get a good map of the Underground and the City...it's F'n HUGE....and since it's pretty flat......lack of reference points can make it a challenge to navigate as a nubie.
A great area to go to party is SoHo, a great place to shop during the day(if the weather's cooperating) is Notting Hill.
If you like good beer....try the John Smith range.....hard to find a bad one in the lot.
Sadly I found bottled Budweiser in nearly EVERY pub/bar/club I visited...if you're going to London drink the good stuff....they'll still be Bud Mud when you get back home.
If you're out drinking late......and the Underground is closed.......stick with the REAL taxi cabs....they are clean, comfortable, and the drivers are highly professional...stay away from the illegal cabbies......especially if you're drinking.
Also, consider staying at or visiting the bars in the bigger youth hostels......it's a great place to meet people, have fun, and find out what the best deals are on the day.....

I've never spent any time in Orlando as an adult.......but Y'bor City in Tampa is a completely different story ;)

No he just REALLY likes wiping his ass with sandpaper - don't you? I just figured it was an English thing. ;)

I'm looking forward to it. It's been a long time since I've been "away" without my kids. The best part is.... they are flying us down on Sunday, and the conference doesn't actually start until Wednesday. p-)

Busch Gardens. Then drinking. Maybe the other way around.

I foresee a hangover conference. :D
It's not that I don't particualrly like London, it's just too expensive and I've been drinking in a lot of other cities in England, trust me, there are better places (Leeds, Nottingham, Leicester and even Falmouth to name a few).
That was good advice from Flagg earler in the thread with the exception of one thing. John Smiths beer is tasteless ****e.
It's good stuff if you've never drank British beer before and want to start with something that's not too heavy but I assure you, you will find better beer.
Stuff you can expect to see in London includes Fullers London Pride, Morlands Old Speckled Hen and Theakstons Old Peculiar. These are some of the better known types of bitter and as long as they're kept right by the pub it's hard to go wrong them.
Trust me, I'm a barman.

I plan to, James. What better time? I'll be away from home. I won't have to work or take care of kids. All I have to do is sit in a conference starting on Wednesday. I think I can handle that. :)
The best part is.... I don't drink much, so it won't even be an expensive occasion. :D

Thanks for the advice Gaz......I'll have to try the beers you mentioned the next time I'm over later this year.
Maybe you can answer this question....to be honest...I was shocked to see so much Budweiser for sale.....mostly Bud long-neck bottles....What's the deal? Rumour had it that European Bud is brewed in Czech Republic and much better quality(like not being made with rice, for one)....but I wasn't taking the chance to find out....or wasting my time when I felt like a kid in a candy store.

European Bud is Budvaar (spelling), it's the original Bud, and tastes a trillion times better than Budweiser.
If you see Budvaar, buy it and see what you think. Budweiser is like water. Didn't Budweiser and Budvaar have a huge lawsuit about it a while ago, about who could use the name?

Now that's what I'm talking about.....a cheap date ;)
There was nothing worse than being a poor, poor Uni student, back in the day, and stressing about whether or not your meager funds would outlast the overactive metabolism of that hot young lady you're keen on at the bar....because when I'd run out of money I was only left with looks and personality.....which was like going to a gunfight with a Swiss Army Knife.

You saw so much Bud for sale over here because it's popular with younger drinkers in nightclubs and very busy inner city pubs. When I say younger drinkers I mean those between the ages of 18 and about 25, it's popular in nightclubs because you don't have to move around on jam packed dancefloors trying not to spill your pint, with a bottle you take a couple of swigs out of it and the chances of spillage are small.
About your rumour, it's part correct and part incorrect. The Budweiser you were drinking here was brewed in Britain (In London I think, but don't quote me on that), if you were in Dublin you would have been drinking Bud that was brewed in the Republic of Ireland. Both of them are made with rice (I had to look on the website to confirm that) and I imagine are pretty much identical to the Bud you get in the US with the exception of alcohol content, British Bud is 5.0% ABV and Irish Bud is 4.3% ABV(According to the website that's because 4.3% is pretty much the "industry standard" there). I'm told the rice was orginally something cheap that would add a bit of flavour and then the marketing geniuses got hold of it and turned it into a selling point, whether that's true or not I don't know.
Now this is the part where I think you were either misinformed or misunderstood the rumour - there's a beer called Budweiser Budvar which is brewed in the Czech Republic, but doesn't really have anything to do with the American Budweiser.
Except it does.
:D
My (Admittedly limited) understanding of it is that the guy who started Budweiser in the US was named Busch, he tasted Budvar, liked it and went back to the States and started brewing a beer he called Budweiser (Which was similar to Budvar, but not identical). After a while the people who owned Budvar (I actually think it was the Czech government) decided to start exporting Budvar as something called Budweiser Budvar but the Budweiser trademark was already held by Mister Busch so they were unable to, as far as I know this is a legal wrangle that continues to this day.
Anyway, to my knowledge Budweiser is based on Budvar which is what makes me think your rumour meant by "European Budweiser". I've drank bottled Budweiser in the UK and I've drank Budvar in bottles both here and in Prague as well as Budvar on tap in Prague, personally I think Budvar is vastly superior, the problem is that in the UK not a lot of places stock it and when they do it's much more expensive.

Did anyone notice I went all misty eyed when talking about beer....

Yeah.... that's me..... ;)
Now back in college.... I could drink a lot more, but we were poor, so we drank stuff like Milwaukee's Best Light and PBR..... good god.... not sure how I lived through that! ;)

Excellent advice Flagg. Just a couple of details I've pointed out, FYI, and everyone else's. Not flaming, (I'm naturally pedantic).
Enjoy your trip!

A little reading for those from overseas who might wish to frequent UK pubs, ANZACS will know the drill so no surprises in this document.
