here some facts:

The SS was a a paramilitary (not soldiers) organisation.
They've been murder from the first moment of creation (former SA)in german concentration camps before september 1939 (WW2).
The Nurnberg trial declared the SS organisation guilty for warcrimes and crime against the humanity.
They've murdered millions innocent civilians inside of several hundreds of work,concentration and prisoner camps all over europe.
They've murdered several thousands civilians in punitive actions all over europe (Babi Yar etc.).
They've murdered british soviet,french and us prisoners of war.(RIP)
It makes no sense to mention the so called "glory" of this organisation in any way,because there is no glory left for an organisation that admits to "EXTERMINATE" millions of civilians (old people,woman and children).
Remember all of them where volunteer to joint the SS and up from 1938 nobody in germany ignore what was going on.

As so they where psychopathic,brainwashed and born MURDERS.
Everybody holding up the legend of "SS-GLORY" or defending theire bloody way in europe should make a visit to his psy.

This tread did not show one picture of SS killing his victim. Only strong fighting men.Remember that the russian mass graves where filled by these men.

I've been for long years in Berlin Germany and i had the time to study in Berlin Document Center the SS-Files and statements made from former members of SS.Later i had contact with a lot of them.
There was "NO REGRETS" for what they've done. 30 years later and still no regrets at all because they followed theire orders.
In fact the problem was that most of them known these "orders" long time before entering the SS.
I guess i've understand what "Vernichtungslager" (Extermination Camp) means.


At least.
Glorification of evil is evil.
Glory goes to the armed and unarmed man and woman who fights agains them.
Glory goes to those ones who stands upright to theire last breath.

SS HANDZAR.
The 13th Waffen Mountain Division of the SS Handschar (1st Croatian) was one of the thirty-eight divisions fielded as part of the Waffen-SS during World War II. It was the largest of the SS divisions, with 21,065 men at its peak, composed almost entirely of non-German Muslim and Catholic recruits drawn from Bosnia. Handschar (Bosnian/Croatian: Handžar) was the local word for the Turkish scimitar (Arabic: Khanjar خنجر), a historical symbol of Bosnia and Islam. An image of the Handschar adorned the division's flag and coat of arms.

Serbian Volunteer Corps
also known as Ljotićevci after their ideological leader Dimitrije Ljotić was a collaborationist anti-Partisan military formation in Nedić's Serbia during World War II. In July 1941, a full scale rebellion by communist partisans and the royalist "Yugoslav Army in the Fatherland" (Jugoslovenska vojska u otadžbini, or JVUO, or Chetniks) erupted in Serbia. The Germans pressured Milan Nedić's collaborationist government to deal with the uprisings under the threat of letting the armed forces of Croatia, Hungary, and Bulgaria occupy the country and maintain peace and order in it.

During Autumn and Winter of 1941, the Soviets launched a number of operations against the German lines in the Northern sector of the Front. During these kessel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kessel_(cauldron)) battles, Totenkopf suffered so greatly that, due to its reduced size, it was re-designated Kampfgruppe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kampfgruppe) Eicke. The division was involved in ferocious fighting to hold the pocket. SS-Hauptscharführer Erwin Meierdress (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erwin_Meierdress) of the Sturmgeschütze-Batterie Totenkopf formed a Kampfgruppe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kampfgruppe) of about 120 men and held the strategic town of Bjakowo despite repeated determined enemy attempts to capture the town. During these battles, Meierdress personally destroyed several enemy tanks in his StuG III (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StuG_III). He was awarded the Iron Cross (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Cross) for his actions during this period. In April 1942, the division broke out of the pocket and managed to reach friendly lines.
At Demjansk, about 80% of its soldiers were killed in action. The remnants of the Division were pulled out of action in late October, 1942 and sent to France to be refitted. While in France, the Division took part in Case Anton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Case_Anton), the takeover of Vichy France (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vichy_France) in November 1942. Hospital for War Veterans ,it is free and they are treated well . During one of his visits when talking about the War and his time in Germany as a POW , he stated that he had been made prisoner by the SS . I think that I was 12 years old at the time . My knowledge of WW2 at that stage was limited to what I had learnt from various TV documentaries ,a fascination with War Comics . The SS , I was doubtfull to say the least ," They carried me on a stretcher over a Kilometer to an aid Station where some
Officer cleaned and bandaged his wound a few days later I was on a train to Germany " As I grew older I became curious . Why was he not shot ?
My Uncle Ray was captured in Greece and most likely by the Leibstandarte as were some 2000 Aussies in 1941 (not all by the LAH )
Now as far as can ascertain the only SS in Greece were the LAH ,I cannot find any evidence of the shooting of POWs in that campaign .
Please do not conclude that I am an SS sympathiser . I am not.

From my reading Aussie Offical History's the Germans in Greece did not actually shoot out of hand many if any Aussies.
One thing they did do, I think it was a SS Div was make Aussie POW's sit out the front of their lines at dusk/evening which whenever Aussie MG's etc were fired many rounds landed amongst the POW's killing some and wounding many.
I have heard that one of the first things done by the SS and most German forces inc Africa Corps was the removal and destruction of the slouch hats.
But the shooting of prisoners and wounded, I have in my effots to understand this period as far as my knowledge goes is not known to of happened, though to contradict this staement being SS it is possible if not probable that some Aussies POW's etc were shot.
I will go into my reading collection over next day or so and see if I can find out more precise info for you.

I once saw a TV documentary about Reinhard Heydrich, which despite his despicable crimes against civilians, showed him to be a great family man who loved his wife and children. It's odd to reconcile the two. This was a recurring theme even among those who ran the death camps. I've no idea if the soldiers in these photos were simply professional troops or were guilty of war crimes, but it's odd to see men with the double lightning flash on their uniforms playing with rabbits, pet dogs and their girlfriends and pals. I couldn't identify many of the cars but could recognise a Fiat Topolino among them. One of the oddities of WW2 is how the Wermacht especially used captured vehicles whereas allied troops sometimes used captured MP40s. Amazing pics though, many thanks.

My late Father-in-law served in the British 50th Division from 1941 until 1946. He fought in the Western Desert, Italy and from 6th June 1944 in France, Belgium and Holland, being withdrawn back to England to re-equip
with tropical gear for service in the Far East. In Egypt and Lybia he didn't come into contact with the SS, but in Italy and France and the Low Countries he "met" them on a number of occasions. He always had the greatest respect for them as soldiers. During one engagement, his section came across a small number of Waffen SS in a farm house. After their first attack was beaten off, my Father-in-law emptied the magazine of a Bren in one go through the window and one of his men, a keen cricketer threw 2 hand grenades from about 40 yards straight through the adjacent window. After Richie's prolonged burst some of the SS moved to their right, unfortunately for them, straight into the path of the grenades. The firing went on for about 45 minutes until their only appeared to be the odd pistol shot coming from the house. They sneaked round and climbed in through a window. The only man left able to fire was a cook with 3 bullet wounds and several pieces of shrapnel in him. A medic was treating several other men who were incapable of firing. At first the Brits congratulated themselves until they realised that not only did the Germans
only have rifles (Mauser 98?) and 2 sub machine guns, but 4 out of the 9 had already been wounded the day before in an attack by a Typhoon. There is a post-script to this story which shows the other side. A few months later in Holland, My Father-in-law, then a Corporal, was told to take 3 other men to look for a Lieutenant and 2 other men who had gone missing earlier that day. They came to a farm and were about to drive through the gate when they noticed a man waving to them. They spoke to him and were told the men they were looking for had been shot by some Germans. They found the bodies in some nearby woods. From the wounds they could tell they had all been shot from behind through the head. It was obvious they had been executed. The germans were in a small outbuilding used to store animal feed. The grenade throwing cricketer from above sneaked round the back and put some grenades in through a window which set fire to some straw. As the Germans came out through the front door choking from the smoke they put their hands up. After a quick talk between the squaddies, Ritchie pointed out the half concealed British bodies, looked again at the SS uniforms and shot them all. The Dutch farmer then took the boots from the Sergeant's feet and laughing to himself dragged the bodies of the SS troops round the back of the farm and disposed of them. There was no satisfaction in the way I was told that story, but it does amplify the way you can see someone. One story shows how professionalism and dogged determination can hold up an enemy force and make them put more assets into a situation than the defending force should really merit. The other shows how unecessary violence caused the deaths not only of the British troops in an illegal manner but also provoked the nicest man I have ever met in my life to effectively commit murder. He died in 1993 of natural causes.

During Autumn and Winter of 1941, the Soviets launched a number of operations against the German lines in the Northern sector of the Front. During one of these operations, the Division was encircled for several months near Demjansk in what would come to be known as the Demjansk Pocket (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demyansk_Pocket). During these kessel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kessel_(cauldron)) battles, Totenkopf suffered so greatly that, due to its reduced size, it was re-designated Kampfgruppe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kampfgruppe) Eicke. The division was involved in ferocious fighting to hold the pocket. SS-Hauptscharführer Erwin Meierdress (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erwin_Meierdress) of the Sturmgeschütze-Batterie Totenkopf formed a Kampfgruppe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kampfgruppe) of about 120 men and held the strategic town of Bjakowo despite repeated determined enemy attempts to capture the town. During these battles, Meierdress personally destroyed several enemy tanks in his StuG III (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StuG_III). He was awarded the Iron Cross (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Cross) for his actions during this period. In April 1942, the division broke out of the pocket and managed to reach friendly lines.
At Demjansk, about 80% of its soldiers were killed in action. The remnants of the Division were pulled out of action in late October, 1942 and sent to France to be refitted. While in France, the Division took part in Case Anton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Case_Anton), the takeover of Vichy France (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vichy_France) in November 1942. For this operation, the division was supplied with a Panzer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panzer) regiment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regiment) and redesignated 3.SS-Panzergrenadier-Division Totenkopf. Thanks to the persuasive efforts of Himmler and SS-Obergruppenführer Paul Hausser (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Hausser), all SS panzergrenadier (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panzergrenadier) divisions received a full regiment of panzers, so were full strength panzer divisions in all but name. Yeah they were completely surrounded for months with few supplies in Russia. What would you expect? These SS divisions fought very bravely and fanatically in Karkow all the way to Hungary and Germany at the end of the war. Now a large part of this could be because of the material that was allocated to these divisions, but they were great fighters nonetheless.

And everyone loves to say this and that about the Waffen-SS, but please tell me this: As a young teenage boy wouldn't you WANT to join a unit that was regarded by everyone as an "elite" unit? Honestly, I would have jumped at the chance for the SS I'm sure...ironic because I'm only half white, but I'm trying to take an objective approach to the time period.

It's an M16. I am not quite sure which SS troops used these exactly and had a lott of discussions about it with fellow militaria-collectors. I've read and heard about several uses for this type of helmet: combat helmet for SD, parade helmet for SS-VT, pre-war austrian SS helmet...but untill this day I haven't been 100% sure who in the SS organisation used this type of helmet. It used to have a NS-party decal on it as well, but it was removed by a previous owner :-(, you can still see the outline of the decal. Also the decals were applied reversed but I don't know the purpose of this.

The other one is your typical M42 single decal SS combat helmet :).

This is a pretty well known picture. The 2 on the right are wearing the M1934 medium duty helmet while the guy on the left is wearing a World War 1 M1918 helmet. The use of the M1918 probably had something to do with supply shortages or maybe he's just wearing it because it provides better protection than the medium duty M1934, at least that's what I've read about this picture if I remember correctly.

In some countries owners of pictures with SS symbols have criminal prosecution. And these owners paint over SS symbols on photos, pic or some..... We see that on last photo. The owner has shaded SS on photo.
In fact..., in Russia it is forbidden image SS on public. This penal (but sometime).

Actually I believe the last photo, the group shot, is of Sicherdienst (SD), they did not wear the runes but only a blank tab with the rank on the other. You can see one of the men on the right has a sleeve diamond, and although hard to see it clearly, based on the uniform patterns (many M34 and M37 tunics, combined with M40 and M43 hats) I'd lean towards SD since they tended to keep the traditional uniform.
But you will also see pictures of some tabs painted over postwar out of fear of persecution.

The "Totenkopf" cuff title was authorized for this unit 1 September 1942.

The "Theodor Eicke" cuff title was authorized for SS-Panzergrenadier Regiment 6 Theodor Eicke in March 1943.

The "Thule" cuff title was authorized for SS-Panzergrenadier Regiment 5 1942. It was ordered to be discontinued in 1943 but was used until the end of the war.

A totenkopf collar was initially worn by all members of the division, in vertical format until May 1940 and then in horizontal format.

Thanks for those links. Thankfully there isn't too much text as my knowledge of the German language comes from the comic books and war films of my youth. One reason I've never visited Germany is that trying to get by with "Hande hoch, Schweinhund, Achtung Spitfeure and For you Tommy ze var iz over." is liable to get me only as far as the nearest Hospital casualty department. Eventually the leadership of the PLO was taken over by a man named Rahman Abdul Rauf al-Qudwa al-Husseini. Al-Husseini was a nephew and great admirer of Uncle Haj Amin al-Husseini. He was born in Cairo in 1929 and grew up in the Gaza strip. His mother, Hamida, was a cousin of the Grand Mufti. Due to internal Arab strife, his father Abdul Rauf al-Qudwa was forced to flee Gaza where the family took refuge in Egypt.
