Cross of Iron is pretty good. Now that we're talking about German POV movies anyway; Stalingrad is great too. You should definately check 'em both out if you haven't seen 'em.

1. Hair -demonstrates the insanity of war and conservative thinking.

2. Black Hawk Down -Combat is probably like that in urban areas.

3. Bridge on the River Kwai -who would forget the end...this guy repeating :"madness! madness!"

4. Full Metal Jacket -again the end with the song from the mickey mouse club. Clearly a childrens' crusade because of greedy politicians.

5. BoB -Great, except for the character of **** Winters, who is pretty much like some udermensch or american neo-human, no flaws.

6. Pvt. Ryan -Omaha Beach scene unforgettable.

I have nothing against Winters himself, it's just the thing that Ambrose's book was mostly written based on interviews with Winters. The character is pretty much a saint. And in the book there nothing negative about people who were interviewed for the book. Especially as the book labels the first CO of the company as scum of the earth.

So, the objectivity of the book and tv-series is at least questionable. Those guys became celebrities and worshipped heroes based on their own stories about themselves.

hehe but in this movie the tanks actually did something, all the other movies you just see them for like a minute moving around(excpet in SPR) but that tank in the blown up town scene was fake(tank wouldnt go in first),so it gets no credit :D

Why have u people got such problemss with films like Behind Enemy Lines and Tears of the Sun?
I think they're quite enjoyable.

gaz
03-03-2004, 11:12 AM
Tears of the sun was watchable but nothing more. The writing, acting or directing were not what you'd really call top notch stuff. However, from my limited knowledge it did have some"realism" to it, I assume the actors went through some sort of training to make them look like they could handle weapons and such.

Behind enemy lines was similar. Distinctly average writing, acting and directing, but it didn't have the realism. Admittedly it's been a long time since I watched it but I vaguely remember missiles making near right angle turns.

Bottom line is that both films were the kind of things we've seen dozens of times before and better done as well.

BEL & TOTS are fairly good action movies, but to class 'em as 'war movies' is simply an insult to the REAL war movies.

I'm astounded that so few has mentioned The Thin Red Line... Has to be my all-time favorite flick. The scenery, acting, music, story (which is based on actual events)... everything perfect!

Apart from that,
The Longest Day
Blackhawk Down
We Were Soldiers
Platoon
Full Metal Jacket

We could do with some classification of what is a war movie and what isn't. If BEL & TOTS aren't war movies, then neither is BHD. And in my opinion TOTS is as good as BHD.

Haiw
03-03-2004, 04:40 PM
BHD is kind of in the gray area. On one hand it's based on true events and all, but on the other hand it's often far from realistic, and it's romanticized up to a point where it becomes rated PG for Patriotic Garbage.

Tears of the Sun was kinda rofl :bash: :-*$ if you know what I mean...

A soldier insubordinating a direct order AND going AWOL... Yeah sure! Up to this point his life was ****, but enjoyable and now he is going to give himselve the boot, just because of these pair of breasts??
Neither the topic is new, nor the actors... the movie was crap.

A very good movie is the German "Die Brücke", English "The Bridge". Not to confused with "A Bridge too Far", though a good movie, too.

"All Quite on the Western Front" maybe wasn't named before.

Yesterday I saw M*A*S*H again. TOP! As ever.

I liked the Bosnian film, "Nomans Land" and of course several others named before.

Band of Brothers (wasn't it a series actually?) wasn't good, as far as I have heard. But I propably will never know...
