Turkey Buys 127 AIM-9X Sidewinder Missiles
Raytheon Missile Systems in Tucson, AZ received a $35.7 million ceiling priced modification to a previously awarded firm-fixed-price contract (N00019-04-C-0006). It exercises an option for the procurement of 127 AIM-9X Sidewinder short range air-air missiles, 22 Captive Air Training Missiles that have the seeker head and electronics but no rocket motor, and 41 containers for the government of Turkey under the Foreign Military Sales Program. The sale is a logical counterpart to Turkey's ongoing F-16 modernization program.
Work will be performed in Tucson, AZ (84%); Rocket Center, WVA (13%); and Andover, MA (3%) and is expected to be complete in March 2008. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Naval Air Systems Command in Patuxent River, MD issued the contract. See all DID coverage that mentions the AIM-9X Sidewinder missile.

Is it really necessary for Greece to "counter" every Turkish arms purchase providing that both are in the NATO and Greece has no other conflicting borders?

Thats a good question. First, noone guarantees that Turkey will not use its superior firepower against Greece in the future, so we need to keep up in relative parity with that.
Apart from that, there is this unofficial "contract" we have with the Americans, according to which we "must" procur arms in order to keep catching up to the largest possible extent with Turkey. So we are supposedly enhancing our self-defense and the US defense industry is making more profits.
So my take of the story is that we procur arms both to protect ourselves (whatever that means) and to inject more cash into the US defense industry, as good and loyal allies and friends. I am afraid i cannot answer with certainty which of those two factors prevails.
And let me remind you that its not only the Greco-Turkish borders that are hot. There is also Albania up North - but it does not consist of a military threat at the moment - and FYROM (the phoney "Macedonia" that is) that is a possible future threat.

Yeah, but we are not going to use any IRIS-T in the North ;)
Apaches, Texans and SCALP EG, along with the SF and the Army, will be used in case of "hot" conflicts.

The Turkish configuration being integrated consists of the APG-68(V)9 multimode radar (currently being installed on new Advanced Block 50/52 F-16s), color cockpit displays and recorders, new core avionics processors, the Joint Helmet-Mounted Cueing System, Link 16 data link, advanced interrogator/transponder, integrated precision navigation, an upgraded version of the Self-Protection Electronic Warfare System (SPEWS II) and compatibility with a number of new weapons and targeting systems.
Acquisition of the SPEWS II hardware and installation beyond the lead-the-fleet kits [those for installation validation and flight test] will be accomplished on a separate contract. Acquisition of the APG-68(V)9 radar upgrade kits beyond those required for development integration testing is not currently planned.
Lockheed Martin is the principal contractor for the program. Tasks include the development effort, kit accumulation, technical assistance for kit installation, upgrades to pilot training systems, and logistics support and training. The baseline program includes kits for 37 Block 30s, 76 Block 50s and four Block 40s. There is an option for 100 more Block 40 kits.
Kit installation will be performed by TUSAS Aerospace Industries (by separate agreement) with technical assistance from Lockheed Martin.
Program milestones include modification kit trial verification installation beginning in early 2007 and continuing about two years. Flight testing will begin in early 2009 and will last approximately two years. The Turkish Air Force is expecting to achieve initial operational capability with the new configuration in 2011.
The program, titled Peace Onyx III, is being processed as a Foreign Military Sale through the U.S. government and follows Peace Onyx I (160 new F-16s in late 1980s to mid-1990s) and Peace Onyx II (80 new F-16s in late 1990s).
On 6 September 2005, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress of a possible Foreign Military Sale to Turkey of AGM-154A/C Joint Standoff Weapons as well as associated equipment and services. The total value, if all options are exercised, could be as high as $35 million.
The Government of Turkey has requested a possible sale of
Major Defense Equipment (MDE)
50 AGM-154A-1 Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW) with BLU-111 and
54 AGM-154C JSOW
Non-MDE
4 AGM-154A-1 JSOW Dummy Air Training;

ahh and a little note to the Achilles, There is no hot border between Greece and Turkey. And Turkey is not a threat for you. Every country must keep its self defence capacity new, modern and alive. Thats it. Turkey is a Nato,UN and many international community member, a candidate of EU...Greece should be fine to have a neigbour like Turkey. Think Iran? Think Syria? Think Iraq?...Think Russia?

LOL, achilles, you give the Macedonians a lot of credit. Fabulous people, but their army is better suited to combat patrol in insurgent territory than heavy combat. Greece's Leopards wouldn't get much of a work-out.
