is it a new hackle or did a disbanded unit give it to carry it on?
history behind it?

unusual. the badge is made up of three feathers and it has an additional one on top. is this just a welsh thing? ;-)

ok ,the 3 feathers u see is the old capbadge of the royal reiment of wales, the green backing is beacuse they served about lord nelsons flagship as marines, the white hackle is what the royal welch fuilsers had,now these two regiments are coming togther, hence this new stuff....the feather/hackle cant just be a welsh thing, the rrf reg also have 1,supposed to have been dipped in blood or somthing cause they red on top, maybe its a fusiler thing?

It is a uniform change - albeit that all that changes in No 8 dress is the beret, the badge, the hackle, badge backing, TRF and the belt. (ie all but the shirt, trousers and boots.)
Must be a wrench for the 23rd of Foot but I'm sure they will carry on in the stile that has made them great over the last few hundred years (longer than many countries have been around).

The red on the RRF hackle is from the blood of the revolutionaries that they bayonetted at Brandywine Creek.

I was just expecting to see some new kind of camo... not a dolled up beret..

Sorry, looks like my memory was wrong on the RRF hackle, authough the the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers (now part of the RRF) fought at Brandywine (as did the 23rd of foot). It seems that official line is that the red is in fact French blood from St. Lucia in 1778 - much more acceptable today!

Yup, it's French blood on the RRF hackle not yankee. :) Got one staring at me as we speak! Awful things!

French blood, Yankee blood, the only diff was they probaly bayonetted the poor Yanks in the chest. The French....while they were ahem kind of facing the other way
Just kidding I like French soldiers, or at least their ration packs. :)

Yeah the wankers at the MOD have made the New Royal regiment of Scotland wear a fcuking Green hackle, hundreds of years of tradition wiped out on the stroke of a pen,to fund the new SF Regiments, and their retainers to keep the shooters from earning silly money with me!

Yes this is the case and it has come into effect, formation parade was on 28th March 2006. The green hackle Argyll is referring to is what the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders have got. The Royal Regiemnt of Scotland is now made up as follows:-
The Royal Scots Battalion RRS, redesignation of 1st Bn Royal Scots
The King's Own Scottish Borderers Battalion RRS , redesignation of 1st Bn King's Own Scottish Borderers
The above 2 regiments are to be amalgamated to form the The Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion of the RRS which has a black hackle.
The Royal Highland Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion RRS , redesignation of 1st Bn Royal Highland Fus - keep white hackle.
The Black Watch, 3rd Battalion RRS, redesignation of 1st Bn Black Watch - keep the red hackle.
The Highlanders, 4th Battalion RRS, redesignation of 1st Bn The Highlanders - blue hackle.
The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 5th Battalion RRS, redesignation of 1st Bn Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders - green hackle.
Territorials and Volunteers:
52nd Lowland Regiment has become the 6th Battalion RRS - black or white hackle depending on Coy.
51st Highland Regiment has become the 7th Battalion RRS - blue, green or red hackle depending on Coy.
........... all very confusing!

The 23rd Regiment of Foot/Royal Welch Fusiliers had a long and illustrious history, and like the Highland regiments, its demise is a sad blow to the British Army's culture. Service included the American Revolution, The Napoleonic Wars, The Sepoy Mutiny, The 2nd Afghan War, The Boer War, The Boxer Rebellion, the worst of the fighting in WWI, Burma and Normandy in WWII, plus numerous other campaigns and battles.

Does anyone have a photo of the new regiment's cap badge to post?
