Odd as may seem, that thing is classified as "pistol" in Italy, because it's under 60cm-lenght closed. As such, it's perfectly legal for me to have as a self defense weapon, I actually carry this when I have to travel to remote areas in Italy (I have CCW).

Specs:

-K23B model ar15 from Olyarms modded as follows:

-upper receiver A3

-closed type bolt carrier

-CRANE sopmod stock with milspec buffer tube

-Magpul MIAD grip and MIAD trigger guard

-A.R.M.S. #40 rear BUIS

-FIRSH rail forend (carbine lenght, extends over gas block)

-Modded railed gas block in order to fit under FIRSH

-Custom made gas tube(pigtail)

-Unidentified Front sight, given to me as a gift together with sling swivel in the forend

-NOVESKE XK3 flash hider, this is the very first one acquired in Italy

-Tango Down vertical front grip

-Magpul XT rail covers

-Aimpoint clone (I know,I know..poser..wannabe etc..but after completing this project I'm BROKE..just did not have 600euros for a real ML2..)

As for now, this little blaster costed to me nearly 4000 euros total (the K23B was sold for 2300 euros back in 2001, I acquired it with 8 20-rds magazines for 2650). But in the end it's worth it's cost, It shoot damn well, it's the only one so modded in Italy as I know and it's legal to carry...

A special thanks to Mr. GUSTAF from www.tacticalsense.com ,without his help I would haven't been able to complete this project.

You stand correct, seraphim..as for the fakes magpul covers, the owner of magpul stood tall behind his products, he told his authorized italian dealer www.tacticalsense.com to have sent my fakes in exchange for the for the real ones.

Customer service superlative!

Hey that's sweet stuff right there. At what distance do you shoot that thing with? 25 yards (22.86m)? 50 yards (45.72m)? Can you still hit a target at 100 yards (91.44m) with such a short barrel? I'm just curious, because I'm thinking about making one my my AR's a shorty with an 11.5" barrel.

with a 11.5'' barrel you won't have any problem to hit a human target at 100yards

good job Underdog! ;-)

I can hit IPSC plates (roughly 10") at 100 yds with irons I can hit reliabily an ISPC paper target at 180 yds, also with irons. The thing is amazingly accurate considering the short barrel, where it shines is in CQB drills.

However, for real life usage, the maximum effective range would be inside 25 yds for effective fragmentation, beyond that, the 223 from such a short barrel did not fragment at all.

This is close protection weapon, meant for personal defense or PSD, definitely is not a battle rifle.

Recoil and muzzle blast with the original VORTEX flash hider is negligible..soundblast is entirely a different matter..the thing is LOUD. I will post a range review with the NOVESKE fh when I'll hit the range.

Frens, have you threaded your barrel? How is the birdcage DH working?

yes I had my barrel threaded one month ago and now my AR is really evil :-)
the retired gunsmith did an awsome work!

Just returned from range.

The noveske FH added 1 inch lenght to the K23B, I was curious if that increase in lenght (that is a disadvantage for such a compact weapon) would match an increase in performance.

Also, torqued to spec with crush nut, the noveske would not index correctly..the writings are upside down..I'm trying to get info on how to correct this, anyone knows?

I'm sorry to say that this is not so.

The thing is MUCH louder than before, every shot is thunderous BOOM downrange, I cannot imagine what would be in a enclosed space. The FH is also quite heavy for such a short barrel, changing the weapon balance entirely.

The perceived recoil is also augmented, nothing worrysome, but it's definitely more than with the vortex FH.

My opinion on the noveske flash hider is that maybe it would shine on a full-auto weapon, or for military CQB applications, but for civilian applications others than cosmetic, I vastly prefer the original VORTEX FH.

However, I have in order the TROY medieval FH, I will post a review when shipped to me.

Are you going to be welding a 5" flash hider on it or you going the Form 4 route?

A sexy firearm...

I forget what length our AR-pistols have to be to be considered a pistol. If they ARE pistols though, you are not allowed a stock, just a buffer tube.

Looks good man.

Hehe, you right on track..I ALWAYS carry papers with me when carrying the k23b, carabinieri are dumbnuts for sure (at least the ones on roadblocks).

Other than that, you would be surprised at the weapons criminals do use in my area, mainly FN fals, old garands and the ubiquitous yugo ak47.
