Yes it is, German Bundeswehr still has some Uzis in their armory, it's German designation is "Maschinenepistole 2" or MP2.

Check this link here (http://www.deutschesheer.de/portal/a/heer/kcxml/04_Sj9SPykssy0xPLMnMz0vM0Y_QjzKLd4838wsCSYGZ7ub6kTCxoJRUfV-P_NxUfW_9AP2C3IhyR0dFRQAV1zRM/delta/base64xml/L2dJQSEvUUt3QS80SVVFLzZfR182T0U%21?yw_contentURL=%2FC1256F870054206E%2FW269A9VP631INFODE%2Fcontent.jsp)

(it's in German, sorry)

Could easily be, the IMI Uzi was in German service for a while under the designation MP2.

For a while? The MP2 was the only machinepistol in Bundeswehr service for decades (besides a few MP5 in different versions).

The Uzi with collapsible stock is called MP2A1 in the German military, whereas the MP2 has a wooden stock.

And it was built under license by Fn Herstal, not IMI.

Is it true that the Germans bought the Uzi becuase it was cheaper than the H&K MP-5??

No, they bought it because at that time there were no MP5's existing.

UZI has been manufactured in Germany for a while

The UZI was the most unreliable and so by the shooting instructors most feared weapon the Bundeswehr has. You never know if the weapon will jam, fire a single short or fire a burst of shots.

It's true German Bundeswehr has used the UZI as the standard MP for decades. Why? I don't have a clue, possibly because it is cheap. More likely to please Israel. But certainly not because it's an overwhelmingly great weapon.

Well, they bought the Uzi as some kind of reparation for Israel. Ironically the german Uzis then were produced in Belgium.
It is right that the MP5 wasn't around at this time, but there were other german SMGs avaiable, the Walther MPL & MPK for example.
