I wonder if Poland would send troops to Haiti again... We were there in 1809 (300 troops send by Napoleon... who were left there after napoleon defeat, and it is why many ppl on haiti have polish names :-) ) Second time in 1994(Grom was send there and it was first time when ppl in poland were informed that such unit exist... :-) (no one left there after that ;) )

Believe it or not, the Antilles is probably, with French Guyana, the least sought after overseas posting in the French armed forces...
The locals are pretty unbearable (I think some people call them N.....s with attitude in the US), the prices very steep, the operational missions very rare, the pay almost the same as in France...
French soldiers prefer being posted to Africa (Senegal, Gabon, Central African Republic,Ivory Coast...), the Réunion Island, Mayotte Island, Tahiti, Djibouti...yes, the Antilles are way down the list...

There's been many complaints from Gendarmerie units about the fact they were provided with only a limited choice of BA sizes.
After a series of cases of Gendarmes being killed on active duty because of a lack of BA, tens of thousands of new BA have been recently ordered but as you can see, the situation is still not perfect....
This BA is called "Gilet de protection à port discret" (discreet wear body armour) in French.
As for the FAMAS G2, only the Navy (which never gets to really use them!) has received 20,000 of them.
The Gendarmerie Mobile uses the FAMAS F1.

fantassin is right. The Antilles or French West indies is not a gpood posting. I was in St. Martin last year and talked to a Sgt base there over a beer in Mairgot.
As he said, little or no training, prices waay to steep for them to enjoy themsleves there, looked down on by the locals and tourists, well all that leads to poor morale, boredom and rampant alcoholism. Not really a good combination for troopies when you think about it.
Great beaches though.

That's why most of the troops there are on rotation for four months so they keep sharp.
Those staying two years are mostly support troops and specialists; the quality of the locally recruited troops is sometimes problematic.
Superstition is rife;I have seen one taking a dump facing the bowl because he was afraid " a spirit" would come out of the toilet bowl and grab him...they remove showerheads because they are afraid "spirits" will come out of them and since they can't watch all those tiny holes with only two eyes...
Soldiers from Tahiti and New Caledonia are on the other hand very good (and unstoppable when drunk...)

I lived in Trinidad in the lesser antilles for 3 years, and the mentallity is the same all over the west indies. Superstition runs rampant. They believe in vampires and stuff. And if u ever come across the forest spirit u take off all your clothes turn them inside out, put them back on and leave your left shoe on the ground for the spirit. They dont make the best soldiers most of the time. But thats not saying they are stupid. Its just their superstitions tend to take the best of them sometimes.

It is not French, it is Haitian Creole. French is taught in schools, but most Haitians don't complete enough school and don't speak French at home.
Spoken, Haitian Creole does sound a lot like bad French, but as a written language it is especially ugly. The sign says "Pa Antré Avek Zarm" (or "Zam"), which would be, more or less, a Creolized "Pas entre avec des armes" (itself bad French, but most French would understand what was meant).

And ´where is there helmet ? :P
The dudes in white body armour are not army, they are police, or a unit affiliated with the police. I THINK!
And the reason you're not wearing a helmet is due to the fact that it's a PEACEKEEPING mission. They aren't there to kick ass, they are there to calm things down. And you don't calm things down by looking all agressive and stuff do you... :)

The "high calibre machine gun" is the old ANF1 MG in 7,62mm, a weapon that's way past its prime and should be replaced in French army service by either the MAG or the SS77, and this by 2008.
The French army regulation assault vest being rubbish, most of the guys on those pics have bought their own assault vest from Arktis...
As for the Chileans, thanks again to a series of articles published by RAIDS, they seem to use quite a wide range of assault rifles; over different articles, I have seen:
FAMAE SIG 540 (some with scopes)
StG 57 from Switzerland
Galil SAR
Colt M4 (Navy combat swimmers, RAIDS had a great article on them last year)

If only...in my numerous years in the army I have noticed that unless you are a member of an SF unit, you don't get issued foreign, non-regulation kit in the French Army.
But in many units, the Company commander or even the Platoon commander gathers his soldiers and says: "right, our kit is crap, let's get something better; if we buy 1 Arktis 1601 assault vest, it's 269 euros; if we get 100 of them it's 20% cheaper..."
And at the end of the day, all you see are pictures of French soldiers with non regulation kit they've paid for themselves while the crappy issued kit remains on the shelves of the quartermaster.
Same as everywhere !

Doha is generally a bore. I always have to come into to work nights after training and matches. The temperature is rising, too.
I'll be travelling to parts of the AOR that are cooler soon. It will also be a change of pace. Anxious to get out for a bit.

It's not wool, it's a fire-resistant material called Nomex.

Yes, they do. After my information approx. 140 legionnaires of the 2nd Company (2° CIE) from the 3° REI are in Haiti in action.
Haha, if you look closely to a series of pictures in this thread there is a white powdered haitian guy showing his huge ****.

Good pics woot
It's a pity that it misses some
But in many units, the Company commander or even the Platoon commander gathers his soldiers and says: "right, our kit is crap, let's get something better; if we buy 1 Arktis 1601 assault vest, it's 269 euros; if we get 100 of them it's 20% cheaper..."
That's an unfortunate trend. I'd be concerned that the Army would come to rely on that and retard the rate at which the 'good stuff' finds its way out in the field as a 'cost saving measure'.
