What's the German soldier doing with an M-16/C7?

She is wearing the beret badge and shoulder patch of the 1 (German / Netherlands) Corps (http://www.1gnc.de/), so presumably it is a Dutch C7. Probably joint staffs and headquarters units within that corps use the one rifle to standardize things.

Because it won't. Somalia is essentially a nation of people who know nothing but violence. Haiti isn't.

All M16's have that flap on the trigger gaurd to allow for heavy gloved or mittened hands...the only way you really know its a C7/A1 is from the overall A2 styling but the A1 sights.

What good is posting a guard with an empty rifle, no ammo pouches, no bayonet, and not even a whistle that she can use to summon help?

She's better off with a club. At least it's more handy. Or at least when she gets roughed up, the German army won't 't have to explain how it loses a service rifle.

It's more ceremonial than anything else. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetary has 1 man posted 24/7 with an M14 rifle and full dress uniform. I don't even think they keep the rifle loaded (one of the BTDT's or NcDeuce might know).

Well, someone has suggested another target for terrorists. Presidential palace of the NATO country, female soldiers, no ammo in their guns... I think that my grandpa with his walking stick would be able to penetrate this... :D It's not even a ceremonial post it's just a show. If she was attacked by dog or some pervert, she would have big problem with defending herself...

that is the most openly sexist and discrimatory comment i am yet ot hear on the site....Do you honestly believe a girl cannot defend herself?

Go down the street find a girl and start her.....i bet that when she like any human needs to defend herself or wat she is required to do she can do it aswell as any male can.

The guard at Buckingham Palace do literally have rounds in the magazine and will shoot if they ultimately need to. And just like 10 Downing Street, Guards with live rounds and effective weapons will be nearby in the need 2 defend the residence/palace/parliment/strategic facility. Do you think by not seeing a guard means one isnt around?

DUDE....go realise balls do not give you the right to rule the earth!

Nothing to do with the EU; the British army still does not accept women in its infantry and armoured units and it's part of the EU.

It's a national choice;for example, France allows it but there are very very few female volunteers for infantry and armoured units. It's just a way of getting the feminists off the government's back.

I have seen pics of american woman running around in Iraq.

Those females are MPs. Women are not allowed into infantry, armor or artillery units in the Army or Marines.

that is the most openly sexist and discrimatory comment i am yet ot hear on the site....Do you honestly believe a girl cannot defend herself?

Go down the street find a girl and start her.....i bet that when she like any human needs to defend herself or wat she is required to do she can do it aswell as any male can.

The guard at Buckingham Palace do literally have rounds in the magazine and will shoot if they ultimately need to. And just like 10 Downing Street, Guards with live rounds and effective weapons will be nearby in the need 2 defend the residence/palace/parliment/strategic facility. Do you think by not seeing a guard means one isnt around?

DUDE....go realise balls do not give you the right to rule the earth!Blah blah. Soldier with no live ammo on the sentry post is a dummy. No matter if You have balls or not attacked by pittbull he or she can just swing his or hers shiny rifle. Pls... There are physically strong women who are stronger than some men, but it's an exception not rule. Most men are stronger that she, and You can assume 99,99% that people who would like to attack presidential building would be strong and trained hand to hand combat too. If she is hanging around right there and if she is supposed to be there for some other reason than the media show, she should be given any means to deter or reply a possible danger...which she he apparently was not provided. Sexist pls... is it a new name for criticising the stupidity and dangerous lack of imagination in security matters?
